Towards the shell biorefinery: sustainable synthesis of the anticancer alkaloid Proximicin A from chitin
A shell biorefinery would involve fractionation of crustacean shells and incorporation of the components into value-added products, particularly those that contain nitrogen. In a proof-of-concept study that validates this concept, the anticancer alkaloid proximicin A has been synthesized from the chitin-derived platform chemical 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF). This study accentuates the leading role chitin is likely to play in the sustainable production of nitrogen-containing fine chemicals that are not directly attainable from lignocellulose.</p
The blind spots of secularization
According to several international surveys Spain is among the western countries with the most negative views of Jews. While quantitative data on the topic accumulates, there is a significant lack of interpretative approaches that might explain the particular Spanish case. This paper presents the background, methodology and major results of a discussion group-based study on antisemitism, which was conducted in Spain in the autumn of 2009. The study identifies and locates in different socio-economic and ideological milieus the range of stereotypical discourses on Jews, Judaism and the Arab–Israeli conflict in Spain. Analysis of the group meetings shows that, despite growing secularization in Spanish society, the central explanatory variable for persisting and resurging antisemitism in this country is still religion in a broad cultural sense.N

Bridging the gaps in Southern California: Multicultural spaces throughout the works of Alejandro Morales
The present paper proposes a detailed analysis of the fiction works by Chicano author Alejandro Morales, which map the historical and the potential evolution of the different L.A. settlements and communities, their history (of migration) and their often problematic interrelations. Morales’s narratives(1992-2014)reveal L.A.’s “complex utopian and dystopian ramifications” (Soja 2000:251)and its tendency towards stereotypization (Lie et. al. 2012). To that end,Morales goes far beyond his own familiar ‘space’ as a Latino in the U.S. crossing all types of borders(Spires 2014),making Latinos meet with Anglos, native Americans, African Americans, and Americans with Asian or European roots. At times, these ethnic groups seem to live in mono-ethnic geographies. Nonetheless, they also share the same spaces regardless of any inter/intra-ethnic group differences. Morales clearly seeks rapprochement through otherness and a sense of strangeness. Therefore, L.A. contains not only mono-ethnic but also transnational geographies, which allow Morales to conceive his own ‘geo-history’, where real and imagined space meet.

Genomic characterization of schizophrenia candidate gene regions
Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental disorder with a complex genetic etiology and a lifetime prevalence of ~0.55-1%. In this study, we extracted and analyzed data from 47 independent genomewide scans for linkage to SZ. The genome was partitioned into 22 schizophrenia candidate gene regions (SCRs) by applying three methods: single significant approach, disjoint approach, and smoothing method. For the single significant hit approach, an SCR was defined by the presence of a significant hit by extending 10 cM upstream and downstream of that hit. For the disjoint approach, we identified criteria-events based on clustering of hits within small regions by using a sliding window approach. For the smoothing method, we imputed a randomized range of p-values (0.001697≤p<1) for the genome scans without a suggestive or significant result at each 0.1 cM interval. We combined these p-values with the genome scan results using three methods: geometric mean method, Fisher’s method, and Stouffer’s method. We characterized each SCR by identifying the genes and genomic elements such as structural variations, regulatory elements, and functional noncoding RNAs. We also categorized the genes within SCRs. The total coverage of SCRs is 880 cM (739 Mb) with SCR sizes ranging from 18 cM to 87 cM. SCRs with multiple peaks were divided into smaller subregions. We developed a ranking system to identify and prioritize SZ candidate genes by assigning weights to each of the following criteria: (a) relative significance of a peak within an SCR, (b) annotated in SZ association studies and microarray analyses, and meta-analyses, (c) associated with phenotypes or diseases, and (d) located within or near other genetic elements. We identified functions/diseases and pathways that were most significantly associated with genes that had at least the same score or better than the top 10% of candidate genes after prioritization by utilizing the Ingenuity® Pathways Analysis (IPA). We generated an interactome for SZ based on the SZ candidate genes. We created a website (http://compgen.rutgers.edu/schiz) to disseminate information about our SCRs. Our procedure, which provides a novel approach to identify and prioritize candidate gene regions and genomic elements, is applicable to other complex diseases.Ph. Conditionality and debt relief
Six years into the debt crisis, questions about the relevance of policy measures to alleviate the crisis still abound. Conditionality by international financial institutions and rescheduling by commercial creditors have been dismissed in favor of debt reduction as strategies for restoring the creditworthiness of heavily indebted countries. This paper argues that the combination of conditionality and new private money - if properly interpreted and correctly implemented - should not be dismissed too lightly. The paper contends that liquidity (the availability of current resources) in the debtor country is probably as important an incentive for a country to invest and adjust as having a small enough debt stock outstanding. Debt reduction alone, is not as efficient as simultaneously providing liquidity and debt reduction if liquidity were available. The combination of new money and conditionality will work if the debt stock is small enough and enough new money is available.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Strategic Debt Management,Financial Intermediation,Housing Finance
The internal and external flow fields of a structured porous coated cylinder and implications on flow-induced noise
Porous coated cylinders have been shown to reduce the vortex shedding tone and broadband noise of a bare cylinder placed in uniform flow within specific Reynolds number regimes. The processes by which the vortex shedding and thus tone suppression take place are still uncertain despite numerous numerical and experimental studies. It is understood that adding a porous medium to a bare cylinder will have an influence on the Reynolds number of cylinder, yet the increase of outer diameter alone and the influences of surface roughness are insufficient to explain the changes in the shedding tone magnitude and frequency that are observed by many. Investigating the internal flow field of a porous coated cylinder could lead to a deeper understanding of the flow processes that result in the tonal noise reduction. This has not been achieved to date, as commonly used materials such as metal foam and polyurethane possess randomized porous structures, which make investigating the internal flow field nearly impossible without affecting the structure itself. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the internal and external flow fields of two structured porous coated cylinders. The cylinders were manufactured using solid transparent materials that possess direct lines of sight through the pores in the axial and spanwise directions. Such structured porous coated cylinders have been previously successful in reducing the typical vortex shedding tone. Tomographic and 2-D planar Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) were used in a water-tunnel facility to visualize the internal and external flow fields. To date only the 2-D planar PIV results have been post-processed that reveal differences in the wake for the two different cylinder types such as recirculation of flow around the pores. Vorticity flow structures are observed to vary along the cylinder span in the same pattern as the porous structure and streamlines at the windward cylinder side reveal the entry of flow into the porous medium.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Aircraft Noise and Climate EffectsWind Energ
