No full textEin Ort der besonderen Auseinandersetzung mit Vertrautem und Fremdem ist die solistische (improvisierte) Kadenz in einem Solokonzert aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts, normalerweise gegen Ende eines Satzes. Hier gilt es, Vorheriges, Vertrautes in einen veränderten Zusammenhang zu bringen, und Neues, Fremdes beizusteuern. Im zeitgenössischen pädagogischen Schrifttum erscheint der Begriff des Witzes. Zur speziellen Art pointenreicher Kreativität, wie sie für eine Kadenzenimprovisation erfordert wird, lieferte Sigmund Freud 1905 unter dem Stichwort »Witz« eine erhellende Theorie. Der Witz bildet auch die Voraussetzung für einen Vergleich von Eigenheiten von Konzert und Kadenz mit wesentlichen Merkmalen der Komödie. The improvisation of his solo cadenza offers a special communication between soloist and audience within the interpretation of a concerto. The solo concerto can therefore also be compared with the comedy, of which Harlequin is the symbol. In the instructions for the production of a solo cadenza by D. G. Türk (1789), the term »wit« plays a central role. No full textNach Bachs Tod richtete sich das Interesse von Musikern und Publikum fast ausschließlich auf die Clavier- und Orgelmusik. Einige Vokalwerke, darunter die Motetten, bestimmte Kantaten und Ausschnitte aus den Messen und Passionen, gelangten in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts nur an ausgesuchten Orten zur Aufführung. Im 19. ‘A triumph of spirit over matter’ : conjectures about Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sei solo a violino senza basso accompagnato (BWV 1001-1006)
No full textI recorded the Solo Sonatas and Partitas in July and September 2004. Among the many performances I gave in preparation for the recording were three short concerts in the University of Music in Dresden, Germany, on June 23rd 2004. Each concert featured one sonata and one partita, the three concerts presenting all six works in order. In the extended intermissions between the concerts a symposium took place, organized by Ludger Remy, then Professor of Early Music at the University. The main speaker at the symposium was Dominik Sackmann. His subject – Thoughts on the Purpose behind the Composition of the Sei Solo a Violino, and on their Environment – became the basis of the monograph presented here. It consists of a compact survey of the current state of musicological research into Bach’s violin solos, as well as some fascinating and important discussion of the possible dating of their composition. The monograph was originally published in German by Carus-Verlag, who have kindly allowed this English language version.

Planning in Brazil, India and Germany
No full textPlanning is a fundamental cognitive ability that helps in organizing and structuring events unfolding in a person\u27s daily life. Two studies are presented that analyze planning behavior in different cultures: Brazil, India, and Germany. The first is a cross-cultural psychological study in which students develop plans for uncertain problem scenarios. The second study follows a cultural psychological tradition. Workers from different domains are interviewed about their life problems and plans. The strengths and the weaknesses of both approaches become obvious in the description and discussion of these two studies. The cross-cultural study sheds light on cross-cultural similarities and differences in planning in Brazil, India, and Germany. The cultural psychological approach yields data regarding a theoretical model on the specific cultural influences on planning
Decision Making in Individualistic and Collectivistic Cultures
No full textHow do cultural values influence individuals\u27 decision making? One would expect answers to this question either from cognitive psychology or from cross-cultural psychology. Cognitive theories on decision making, however, rarely consider the factor of culture, and research in cross-cultural psychology deals only to a small extent with decision making. Therefore the study of culture and decision making is a relatively new and unexplored field. In this paper normative and descriptive approaches to decision making are discussed and three cross-cultural studies on decision making in individualistic and collectivist cultures using different methodologies are described. The results are integrated into a model that can be helpful to derive specific hypotheses for further studies in this field

No full textIn the 17th century, the hagiography and iconography of Bishop Iohannes Traguriensis were enriched by various members of Trogir’ s noble families. In this promotion of the cult of the local beato, Dominik Andreis stands out with his efforts: he was the author of an unpublished Litany in Croatian (1632), the instigator of publishing an Italian Vita by Giovanni Francesco Loredan (1648), and the sponsor of a three act drama by Girolamo Brusoni (1656), performed in Trogir with musical intermezzos and published two years later (1658)

No full textAdolf Busch (1891–1952) galt zu Lebzeiten als der bedeutendste deutsche Geiger, seine Interpretationen der Werke von Bach, Beethoven und Reger sind bis heute legendär. Zwischen den Weltkriegen prägte er als Solist, als Leiter des Busch-Quartetts und im Duo mit dem Pianisten Rudolf Serkin das Zürcher Musikleben. Kein auswärtiger Musiker trat so häufig in der Tonhalle auf wie er.
Den Nationalsozialismus bekämpfte Busch aus voller Überzeugung und lehnte es nach 1933 ab, in Hitler-Deutschland aufzutreten. 1935 wurde er Schweizer Bürger, emigrierte 1939 in die USA und kehrte nach 1947 immer wieder in die Schweiz zurück.
Adolf Busch war auch als Komponist bekannt. Ein Blick auf jene Werke, die im Zusammenhang mit dem Zürcher Musikleben entstanden, zeigt aber, dass er als Schöpfer eigener Musik weniger Erfolg hatte.
Anhand von Korrespondenzen und Zeitungsberichten vermittelt das Buch Eindrücke von Buschs Wirkung auf die unmittelbaren Zeitgenossen, unter ihnen der Schriftsteller Thomas Mann, die Geigerin Stefi Geyer, der Zürcher Dirigent Volkmar Andreae und der Winterthurer Musikmäzen Werner Reinhart
