The husband-and-wife design team, who met as students at FIT sixteen years ago, spoke about launching their eponymous contemporary womenswear label, Sachin +Babi, and their luxury home furnishings brand, Ankasa. Dacus (Mellesis) jacobi David & Sachin, sp. n. (Figures 1‒8) Description: Male Head: Frons light fuscous with two frontal setae and single orbital seta, ocellar triangle and ocelli black, medial and lateral vertical setae present. Occiput black with a row of thin black postocular setae. Face reddish brown with inverted U-shaped black marking. Gena fulvous with subocular spot and without seta. Scape elongate, fulvous, pedicel and first flagellomere dark brownish; combined length of pedicel and first flagellomere longer than vertical length of face. Thorax: Scutum reddish brown without medial and lateral postsutural yellow vittae. Yellow markings as follows; notopleuron, base of transverse suture, narrow anipesternal stripe as broad as notopleuron and 0.5 dorsal of katatergite. Anatergite entirely dark brown, subscutellum black. Scutellum yellow with broad reddish brown basal band covering basal quarter. Chaetotaxy: 1 scapular seta, 1 anterior notopleural seta, 1 posterior notopleural seta, 1 postsutural supra-alar seta, 1 anepisternal seta, 1 post-alar seta, 1 intra-alar seta and 1 scutellar seta. Legs: Coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia dark fuscous; tarsal segments fulvous. Wing: (5.81−6.20 mm) dimidiate with broad costal band from cell bc to wing apex, overlapping vein R 4+5 throughout its entire length but not reaching middle of cell r 4+5 apically, anal streak absent. Abdomen: Elongate and petiolate, tergites reddish brown; tergite I with single fulvous band apically, tergites II and III predominantly black with apical reddish brown areas, tergite III black basally and laterally, but with broad reddish-brown areas medially, tergite IV dark brown or black. Pecten present on tergite III; sternite V with shallow/ flat posterior emargination. Male genitalia: Epandrium strongly sclerotised, longer and broader than length of lateral surstylus; posterior lobe of lateral surstylus elongate, 7‒8 times longer than anterior lobe. Proctiger membraneous, round and smaller than epan- drium. Epandrium and surstyli distinctly bulb-shaped in posterior view; medial surstylus shorter than lateral surstylus, tapering towards apex with a pair of thick prensisetae. Phallus elongate (3.36 mm) with well developed sclerotised glans (0.8 mm); 0.75 of glans sclerotised with patterned praeputium; subapical lobe and basal lobe present. Etymology: This species is named after the late D. Jacob, in memory of the first author’s father. Remarks: D. jacobi, sp. n., is similar to D. vijayasegarani Drew & Hancock and D. siamensis Drew & Hancock in possessing a broad costal band overlapping vein R 4+5, petiolate abdomen and face with inverted U-shaped marking joined with broad band above oral margin. It can be differentiated from D. vijayasegarani and D. siamensis by the paler reddish brown scutum and abdomen and the broad reddish brown basal band covering basal quarter of the scutellum; it further differs from D. vijayasegarani by its yellow notopleuron, and from D. siamensis by its moderately developed posterior lobe of the lateral surstylus. It differs from the otherwise similar Sri Lankan species D. ancoralis Leblanc & Doorenweerd (Leblanc et al. 2018) in characters noted in the key.Published as part of David, K. Acrotaeniostola connexa sp. n. (Figures 1–11) Description: Male, Total length of the body, 7. 72 mm Head: higher than long, yellowish orange/fulvous with four pairs of frontal setae, two pairs of orbital setae, single lateral vertical and medial vertical setae. Ocellar triangle black with well developed ocellar setae (as long as orbital seta), postocellar seta well developed. Gena fulvous with four setae, post ocular setae thin and black. Face fulvous and unmarked; antenna fulvous with first flagellomere (third segment) pointed apically, arista plumose. Thorax: Scutum unicolorous, yellowish orange/fulvous without any dark markings and with well developed chaetotaxy; 2 scapular setae, 1 postpronotal lobe seta; 1 anterior notopleural seta; 1 posterior notopleural seta; 1 presutural supra-alar seta; 1 postsutural supra-alar seta, 1 dorsocentral seta, 1 postalar seta, 1 intra-alar seta, 1 prescutellar acrostichal seta. Pleura fulvous with single katepisternal, anepisternal and anepimeral setae. Scutellum fulvous with two pairs of scutellar setae. Legs: all segments fulvous, fore femur with row of spines, mid tibia with 1 apical spine. Wing: (6.76 mm) banded; four transverse bands present, basal transverse band discontinuous from cell sc to apex of cell bcu through Rs; second transverse band extending from pterostigma to anal margin through crossvein R-M; third band from cell r 1 to posterior margin through crossvein dm-cu; apical band fused with third band at crossvein DM-Cu and apex of cell r 4+5 hyaline. Abdomen: predominantly fulvous, tergite II broad expanded covering the lateral region of tergite III; tergite V longer than tergites III-IV combined; sternite V with a deep concavity. Male genitalia: Epandrium fulvous except fuscous basally; lateral surstylus broad with posterior lobe bearing an apical seta, as long as anterior lobe; proctigersetose, larger than epandrium. Medial surstylus as long as lateral surstylus and with 2 thick, black prensisetae. Phallus elongate, coiled (3.29 mm); glans with a bifid, well sclerotised and hook-like acrophallus; vesica curved, preglans lobe present. Female: Similar to male except for the number of frontal setae (three setae in female specimen examined) and size (body length; 11 mm (including oviscape); wing length, 8.1 mm). Oviscape fuscous apically (2.94 mm); eversible membrane elongate (3.29 mm) with spicules on distal end with 10-12 blunt projections (Fig. 10); aculeus tip conical with four pairs of preapical setae (Fig. 11). Remarks: This species is very similar to A. quinaria (Coquillett) from China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Sumatra in general appearance, but can be differentiated by the fused apical and subapical wing bands, which are separate in A. quinaria; constriction of aculeus tip before prepical setae, which is broad in A. quinaria; and deeper concavity of sternite V in males, which is shallow/flat in A. quinaria.Published as part of David, K. Quantitative observations on multiple flow structures inside Ranque Hilsch vortex tube
Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is a device that separates a flow of gas into two streams simultaneously, one hotter than the inlet and one cooler. Traditionally vortex tubes are mostly operated at high entrance pressures (>10 psig) and always used for cooling operations. There are industrial applications that result in unused pressurized gases. Using vortex tube energy separation may be a method to recover waste pressure energy from high and low pressure sources. In various industrial systems, magnitudes of waste pressure may be lower but may have significant mass flow rates. Hence it is important to make sure that vortex tube provides the required energy separation while harnessing the low pressure but high mass flow rate waste energy and utilizes it for not only cooling but also for heating purposes.
Our recent experimental observations show that in the low inlet pressure regime (<10 psig); vortex tubes behave differently and produce multiple flow structures rather than expected re-circulating cold stream and the columnar hot stream type of flow (simply "Vortex Tube flow" or VT-flow).
This thesis characterizes industrial waste pressure as a reclaimable form of energy, analyzes the effectiveness of 'vortex tube energy separation' in recovering waste energy from low pressure sources, and explores experimentally and theoretically the possibility of multiple flow structures (like Reverse, Elbow, T-flow or VT-flow) inside vortex tube in a low inlet pressure regime.
First time, a study of flow modes in low pressure vortex tubes with small cold fractions has been presented which yielded quantitative confirmation of simple one dimensional model for these flows allowing both predictive capabilities and guidance in design.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 111-115)by Sachin Uttamrao Nimbalka
