The role of nongovernmental organizations in primary education - a study of six NGOs in India
Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) extend education to underprivileged children in India, and develop innovations that improve the quality of primary education. In this study of six NGOs working with school-age children in India, the author shows the potential benefits of a government-NGO alliance to achieve universal primary education. The author emphasizes several areas in which collaboration can be particularly fruitful. 1) Targeting under-served children: The Government could support the efforts of NGOs to bring out-of-school children into schools, through timely supply of teachers, classroom space, and other resources. Targeted action is needed to reach different types of out-of-school children - those who work, those who live in slums, those on the street, those who are members of tribes, or of migrant families, and those who live in places without schools. To encourage young, first-generation learners to stay in school, requires a supportive, and nurturing environment. To help make learning interesting, and worthwhile for such children, teachers in government schools could receive special training in new methods developed by NGOs. 2) Enhancing quality: Improving the quality of education requires working closely with key agents of change, such as teachers, school heads, school management committees, and village education committees. To develop a cadre of trainers for primary school teachers, teacher training institutes would do well to evaluate, and learn from NGO models for teacher training. Teachers need a range of knowledge, and skills to teach underprivileged children effectively. Here again, NGO models would be a useful tool for teacher training institutes. NGOs, and the government could collaborate in developing appropriate, and flexible learning assessment tools, in line with innovative teaching, and learning methods. But without safeguards, large-scale replication by the government of such NGO innovations as the"alternative school"and the"voluntary teacher"could lower the quality of education. 3) Government-NGO links: The Government and NGOs will need to share a common vision on how to achieve universal primary education if India is to reach this goal. NGOs can be credible partners with the government in shaping policies for primary education. This entails collaboration, rather than parallel initiatives by NGOs. To stay at the cutting edge in education, NGOs should continually evaluate, and refine their models. Spectral characterizations, Hirshfeld surface analysis and molecular docking studies of new novel NLO 2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one
The molecular structure of the compound, spectroscopic investigations (FT-IR, FT-Raman, and NMR) and the frontier energy level analysis of 2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (DMP3H), have been all examined using density functional theory (DFT) methods. Comparisons are made between predicted DFT geometrical parameters and experimental values and also the same performed between the theoretical vibrational wavenumbers and observed data. Chemical reactivity of DMP3H has been studied using DFT/PBEPBE approach that includes frontier orbital energies, optical characteristics and chemical descriptors. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity of the bioactive ligand has been checked against human cancer cell lines A549 and MCF-7 in vitro by the MTT assay. Hence, the docking and in vitro activity against cancer cell lines display positive results and the present ligand performance appears to be a promising way for anticancer agents with better efficacy
Library and Information Science Education in Arunachal Pradesh
This article presents an overview of LIS education in Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh (A.P.) has several private universities offering LIS schooling, but no Government authority organizations currently offer LIS. The author further recognizes a few issues concerning LIS schooling in A.P alongside specific ideas for development. The findings suggest that more effort is required to establish LIS education in AP by the authorities of Arunachal Pradesh, Rajiv Gandhi University, Library Association, and LIS Professionals of Arunachal Pradesh to provide stable and quality education in LIS
Recent Evidence for the Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease
Numerous novel techniques have surfaced in the fight against coronary artery disease. This review aims to explore primary prevention by assessing methods to control modifiable risk factors and examining strategies for secondary prevention. Mitigating the burden of cardiovascular disease through careful risk reduction highlights the importance of prioritizing primary prevention in health policy. The global consensus endorses smoking cessation weight management and exercise as crucial measures. However recommendations diverge on approaches to hypertension and optimal lipid profiles posing contentious issues. This paper synthesizes international evidence on preventive strategies to offer a comprehensive overview of coronary artery disease research and identify areas needing further investigation
Limb salvage surgery for primary bone tumors: retrospective study in a tertiary care centre
Background: Limb salvage surgery is the standard of care for patients with primary bone tumors. The study retrospectively analyses a single center experience of use of endo-prosthesis for limb conservation in cases of primary bone tumors over a five-year period (2015-2020).
Methods: Total of 34 histologically proven primary bone tumor were retrospectively studied which included 25 males and 9 females who received limb salvage surgery for bone tumors at department of surgical oncology, Rajiv Gandhi Government general hospital, Madras medical college, Chennai.
Results: Median age at diagnosis was 23 years. Tumor localized to lower limb in 23 patients, and upper limb in 9 patients, pelvic bones in 3 cases. Tumors were malignant in 24 patients (70.4%) and benign in 10 patients (29.4%). The most common diagnosis was osteosarcoma17 patients (50%). The median resection length was 10 cm. High grade tumors (grade 2a and 2b and grade 3) was found in 14 cases (41.1%). 6 patients had prosthesis related complications. The mean follow-up was 5 years (range: 3-7). 27 (79.4%) patients of 34 were alive with the endo-prosthesis at the last follow-up.
Conclusions: The custom mega prosthesis favored by us in most of the cases in limb sparing surgery for bone tumors results in satisfactory results in terms of local tumor control and limb function
Anxiety and depression in patients with osteoarthritis: impact and management challenges
BackgroundAnxiety and depression are common psychological comorbidities that impact the quality of life (QoL) of patients. In this systematic review, we 1) determined the impact of anxiety and depression on outcomes in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and 2) summarized unique challenges these comorbidities present to current OA management.Patients and methodsA systematic literature search was performed using the OVID Medline and EMBASE databases until April 2016. Full-text research articles published in English from the year 2000 onward with a sample size of >100 were included in this review. Eligible research articles were reviewed and the following data were extracted: study author(s), year of publication, study design, and key findings.ResultsA total of 38 studies were included in the present review. The present study found that both anxiety and/or depression were highly prevalent among patients with OA. Patients with OA diagnosed with these comorbidities experienced more pain, had frequent hospital visits, took more medication, and reported less optimal outcomes. Management strategies in the form of self-care, telephone support, audio/video education programs, and new pharmacotherapies were reported with favorable results.ConclusionAnxiety and depression adversely impact the QoL of patients with OA. Physicians/caregivers are highly recommended to consider these comorbidities in patients with OA. Ultimately, a holistic individualized management approach is necessary to improve patient outcomes
Variably trained generative adversarial networks
Since their introduction in 2014, Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), have been a hot topic in the AI field. Although the original implementation of GAN is for the generation of images, researchers have progressed beyond that and have created GAN variants that can generate music, perform style transfer and much more. One pitfall of GANs is that they are challenging to train. Many tricks have since been suggested for improved training. In this thesis, we combine these techniques with a state-of-the-art GAN variant in an attempt to improve GAN performance. We implement the Variably Trained GAN (VT-GAN) that combines the features of an Auxiliary Classifier GAN with a deep convolutional neural network architecture, and Label Smoothing and Minibatch Discrimination layer techniques to improve and stabilize GAN training, to generate realistic high quality images. The evaluation metric used is the Inception Score that gives a quantitative value measuring the realness of an image. Although it takes longer for VT-GAN to train due to the addition of complex mathematical operations, for the same amount of training, the VT-GAN performs approximately 3\% better than the AC-GAN with respect to the Inception Score produced.M.S.Includes bibliographical reference
Non-enzymatic biosensing of glucose based on silver nanoparticles synthesized from Ocimum tenuiflorum leaf extract and silver nitrate
An enzyme-free glucose sensor developed based on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via bio-mediated route using Ocimum tenuiflorum leaves extract. The Ag NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Particle size analyzer (PSA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDAX) spectroscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to study structural, optical and morphological properties. The electrocatalytic activity of Ag NPs towards the oxidation of glucose in the 0.1 M NaOH electrolyte solution was analyzed. The Ag NPs was coated on Glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and reports indicating the outstanding capability such as high sensitivity (895.8 μAmM−1cm−2), linear range (1–8.9 mM), response time (<4s), low detection limit (0.0048 μM, S/N = 3), long-term stability, reproducibility, repeatability, and selectivity of the sensor. Therefore, the bio-synthesized Ag NPs can markedly helpful to fabricate non-enzymatic, sustainable, simple, low cost, and eco-friendly glucose monitoring devices.Government of India for financial support through ?
