Strange's World System, by Jonathan Story Susan Strange considered that traditional approaches to the study of international relations, realism and idealism, non longer addressed world conditions. Its practitioners had allowed an ever deeper gulf to develop between international politics and international économies, Her proposal was to place markets and firms at the center of her theory about the world System. In ihrem Artikel The Persistent Myth of Lost Hegemon widerspricht Susan Strange der These eines Machtverlustes der Vereinigten Staaten.

European Business in Japan: A Policy Crossroads?

Until the EC Commission policy statement of September 1994, few Europeans had given much thought to EC relations with Japan. Susan Strange argues that this neglect is mistaken in view of the persistent unilateralism of US policy towards both Europe and Japan. Even though serious barriers to foreign-owned firms (FOFs) remain, it would be a mistake to join the US in multilateralizing "gaiatsu" (foreign pressure). The historical record shows that the US itself is partly responsible for turning a blind eye to Japanese protection of its home market; and, secondly, that firms and private organizations in contact with reformist Japanese may be more effective in bringing about change. Susan Strange: The Authority of Questioning

Susan Strange: The Authority of Questioning (Eugenia Baroncelli) Susan Strange started her career as a journalist in the 1940s. When she passed away in 1998 she was already regarded as one of the main scholars in International relations (IR) and, particularly, International Political Economy (IPE), a field whose creation owes much to her intellectual and academic engagement. Advocates and critics have debated her work, often prompted by her innovative ideas and vibrant intertextual style. Looking at the distinctive traits of Strange’s research and personality, this chapter first goes through the main merits of her thought and academic engagement. Based on inputs from critical voices, it then discusses three aspects of her thought (‘theoretical scarcity’, ‘structural power’, and Strange’s attempt to bridge the gap between the study of politics and economics), arguing that these alleged drawbacks (which often stemmed from her explicit eclecticism) help to a large extent to articulate a distinct position in the academic debate between IPE Positivist and Critical-post positivist Schools. Finally, this contribution highlights those arguments and concepts which, innovative in the days when Strange first formulated them, have become key aspects of modern IPE scholarly research, and have proven her interpretation and anticipation of crucial dynamics across different governance levels. In spite of her staunch academic engagement, Strange constantly challenged the orthodox establishment. Her habit of questioning authority made her wary of attempts at categorizing thought and thinkers. However, it is precisely the resilience of those arguments and concepts, enduring yet flexible as they derived from the continuous questioning of facts and theories, which have made of Strange a master of IR and IPE studies, and an ineludible reference point for any serious research on global political-economic relations

Susan Strange - Casino capitalism: A book review

Many scholars of International Political Economy, herein after IPE, have all come to a common conclusion that the control over financial affairs is a big contributor of international power and influence. Susan Strange, who was at the time of writing Casino Capitalism, a professor in the department of International Relations at the London School of Economics, continues to criticise and observe the often-overlooked pieces of the international financial system enforced and managed by the Bretton Woods system. In this book Professor Strange points out the dangers of mismanagement of money and credit and that the uncertainty in this industry has turned us all into gamblers. In her book she foregrounds these overlooked pieces of the financial system by claiming that the management of money is a political matter of importance. Her research is directed, however not limited to, the changes that were given effect by this financial system on societies. This book review will begin by exploring the authors findings and main argument of the book and thereafter, examine the relevance of the text to IPE. This will be done through assessing the financial prescriptions that professor Strange proposes such as the United States of America embodying the international lender of last resort. However, just as other academic texts, Casino Capitalism has its own blunt area, and this will be explored in the concluding section where the book’s downfalls will be scrutinised, these includes interalia the book’s dismissal of African colonialism and the difficulty to engage with the book without prior knowledge of global economics

From the intersection between International Law and International Political Economy, this article aims to reread Susan Strange's contributions and apply them to the investor-state dispute settlement regime, a topic that was not studied by the author. Therefore, the article examines how the retreat of the State impacts investor-State dispute settlement regime; and how the structural power of transnational corporations is expressed in specific cases of disputes.
