Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

    Get PDF
Immense competition in job market, competitive exam patterns in getting a job, nepotism etc. all are making a job very tough for an unemployed youth nowadays. Even after getting a job, they find lack of independence, job stress, sub ordinance, tiring working hours, politics too severe to tolerate. Entrepreneurship is the act of creating a business either from the scratch or from already an established one ensuring independence, freedom, decision making power, flexible work hours etc. The study will cover all the problems associated with getting and sustaining in the jobs. Besides, all the positive impacts of entrepreneurship will be included in a broad aspect as it has multi-dimensional activities to perform. The obstacles to facilitate entrepreneurship will also be covered so that future corrective actions can be taken to. On top of that, a comparison will be made between these two to represent an evaluation. The role of regulatory authority will also be focused whereas the attention of mass people will be drawn at length. This study will be beneficial as it will come up with potentiality of a particular sector which will remove the problem of unemployment to a great extent and play a role in the economy of our country. The reaction mechanism for base catalyzed hydrolysis of some cyclic 1,2-diketones were investigated by density functinal theory calculations. Three different types of substrates, cyclobutane-1,2-dione, cyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione and substituted and un-substituted benzocyclobutenediones, containing different type of ring moieties were studied. (i.e saturated and mono and bicyclic unsaturated derivatives) Water hexamer was employed in the reaction system for solvation and transportation of OH? ion. The OH? addition is the primary step in any case, which further promoted the ring fission reaction. The ring fission mechanism is critical and is being investigated thoroughly by using density functional methods for the first time for such types of compound computationally. Two density functionals B3LYP and M06-2X in combination with Pople?s double-? basis set were employed to obtain all stationary points along the various possible channels for reactions under investigation. The energies were discerned with M06-2X method combined with MG3S basis set. The various possible mechanisms were discussed in terms of enthalpy changes along the individual courses of reactions. In addition the minimum reaction path simulations were also employed to describe the progress of reactions.by Nargis SultanaAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersZsfassung in dt. und in engl. In Bangladesh maximum rickshaw-pullers are illiterate and from underprivileged background. They are joining this profession as it is a self-determining occupation and does not necessitate any supplementary expertise. Thus, pulling rickshaw is an easy way for urban and rural poor people to discharge form extreme poverty. With the passage of time rickshaw fare is progressively climbing through years and the reasons are budding prices of diurnal commodities, living costs, repairing and spare parts costs of rickshaw etc. Rickshaw pullers normally upturn fare with rise of such day to day expenditures. In reality, price hike and climbing costs of daily necessities do not craft any negative effect on their living style because with the spare of time and price, they are also leveling the rickshaw fare. But, such case poles apart in terms of aged old rickshaw pullers as they do not get reachable passengers parallel to young and robust rickshaw pullers and consequently their bargaining power is less than the young rickshaw pullers. The primary target of several of the rickshaw pullers is to earn typical profit at first, then they attempt for getting extra income and they only do it for casing average variable cost in early spell. They determine the rate of the fare on the basis of time and distance. Though indirect but the rickshaw pullers have a role in the economy and their role is also affected by their pricing strategy. End user identification and accounting for multicast communication

    Get PDF
IP multicast services, especially commercial IP multicast services, are not widely deployed. One of the important obstacles to its deployment is related to the current IP multicast model. The current IP multicast model provides by nature a non-secure, non-controlled way for end systems attached to a network to access multicast traffic. Lack of information about users and access control in this model makes it more vulnerable to different types of attacks and also creates difficulties for a service provider to generate enough revenue. The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is used by IPv4 systems and the Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) is used by IPv6 systems, to report their IP multicast group memberships to any neighboring multicast routers. A new proposal is presented in this thesis to authenticate multicast end users and to control user access to the multicast group communication. The inter-domain security infrastructure AAA framework is incorporated, and the IGMP/MLD messages are extended, to provide user authentication and access control services. The user information in the system can enable a provider to control the distribution of the multicast traffic as well as to collect real time user accounting information

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
