Rheological, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of UHMWPE/CNC composites

In this work, composites of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and various loadings of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared exploiting different methods. Besides, the microstructure, rheological, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the obtained materials were thoroughly investigated. As far as the mechanical behavior of the formulated systems is concerned, CNC-reinforced composites exhibited improved values of Young’s modulus and yielding strength with respect to the unfilled UHMWPE. In particular, the maximum value of ultimate tensile strength was achieved for the systems containing 0.1 wt% of CNCs, and then progressively decreased with increasing the particle loading. As assessed by XRD and DSC analyses, CNC-containing composites showed higher crystallinity degree as compared to the unfilled UHMWPE, suggesting a nucleating effect of embedded CNCs. Morphological and rheological analyses demonstrated that the preparation method involving a solution mixing step is more effective than dry method in promoting the achievement of a peculiar morphology, in which the embedded particles are preferentially located in the interfacial region between UHMWPE grains. Finally, electrical and thermal measurements documented that UHMWPE/CNC composites obtained by solution mixing showed slightly higher thermal conductivity and lower volume resistivity in comparison with the composites prepared by dry method, highlighting that the proper selection of the processing method plays a key role in determining the material final performances

Starting from the Visual Culture theoretical frame, Valentina Mignano explores the ways in which we interact with the screen, dealing with the "screen experience" in the first years of the network societ

The role of different dry-mixing techniques on the mechanical and biological behavior of UHMWPE/alumina-zirconia composites for biomedical applications

The structural, morphological, mechanical characterization and cells interaction of ATZ (Alumina Toughened Zirconia)-UHMWPE composites containing 2.5 wt% of ceramic filler obtained with different dry-mixing techniques are discussed, in order to assess their feasibility as biomedical supportive function materials. The results indicate that, by changing the dry-mixing techniques used for preparing composites, it is possible to tune the structural and morphological characteristics of the composites that, in turn, affect the mechanical parameters. All the composites show good cell interaction and promote higher cell viability at 24 h than the unfilled polymer. The biological behavior is not directly correlated with wettability and microroughness, but it seems dependent on the presence of ATZ filler

Preparation and characterization of UV-LED curable acrylic films containing biochar and/or multiwalled carbon nanotubes: effect of the filler loading on the rheological, thermal and optical properties.

UV-LED curable coatings represent an up-to-date attractive field due to the high curing eciency even in the presence of high filler loadings, as well as to the absence of infrared wavelengths that may negatively impact on heat-sensitive substrates. The addition of carbonaceous materials, such as biochar (BC) and/or multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) could positively improve both the rheological and thermal properties. In this study we report on the synthesis and characterization of carbon-reinforced films containing nanometric (MWCNTs) and micrometric (BC) carbon-based materials. We analyze the rheological properties of the UV-LED curable dispersions, as well as the thermal and optical properties of the resulting films, establishing some correlations between filler dispersion/loading with the main observed properties

Guido Crepax – Valentina – The Shape of Her Time

The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
