Not AvailablePRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A FIELD STUDY CONDUCTED DURING 1984-91 ON ERODED ALLUVIAL SOIL WITH BHABAR GRASS ( EULALIOPSIS BINATA) UNIFORMLY INTERCROPPED UNDER EUCALYPTUS TERETICORNIS PLANTED AT 2500 ha-1 FOR POLEWOOD IN A NORTH - SOUTH ORIENTED PAIRED ROWS SYSTEM ALLOWING BETTER CANOPY ADJUSTMENTS AND LIGHT CONDITIONS. THE RESPONSE TO SIX EUCALYPTUS PLANTING TREATMENTS I.E USUSAL PITS OF 0.3 M3 (TI) , SHALLOW AUGERHOLES SAH (6 X 60 cm ) (T2) , DEEP AUGERHOLE DAH ( 6 X 120 cm ) (T3), DAH FILLED WITH 1 KG FARM YARD MANURE ( FYM) ( T4) DAH FILLED WITH 1 KG OF RICE HUSK (RH) (5) AND DAH +FYM +RH (T6) WAS STUDIED TO FIND OUT THE BEST PRACTICE THAT PROMOTES TREE GROWTH AND MINIMIZES COMPETITION FOR MOISTURE. AFTER SEVEN YEARS, THE BEST TREATMENT OF DAH+FYM (T4) , AND THE WORST PIT PLANTING (T1) RECORDED A SURVIVAL OF 84 AND 53% DBH OF 9.7 ANF 8.6cm , POLE BIOMASS OF 67.1 AND 28.5 AIR DRY TONNES , MARKETABLE NUMBER OF POLES 21009 AND 1328 AND ANNUAL NET RETURNS FROM TREES AND GRASS RS 10659 AND RS 6239 ha-1 yr-1 , RESPECTIVELY AGAINST RS 700 HA-1 YR-1 FROM RAINFED FIELD CROPS. DAH WITHOUT FYM (T3) AND SAH (T2) FOLLOWED THE BEST TREATMENT . RICE HUSK ( HIGH CN RATIO) SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED TREE GROWTH. Not AvailableN DROUGHTS ARE VERY FAMILIAR TO THE FARMERS LIVING IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SHIWALIKS RANGES WHERE NEITHER CANAL NOR TUBEWELL IRRIGATION IS POSSIBLE. THE YEAR 1984-85 BROUGHT ONE OF THE SEVEREST DROUGHTS OF THE RECENT PAST WHEN THE MONSOON RAINFALL WAS ALMOST 30% OF NORMAL AND WINTER RAINS COMPLETELY FAILED. LARGE NUMBER OF FARMERS IN THE REGION COULD NOT SOW CROPS AND THOSE WHO DID HAD NOTHING TO HARVEST. THOUGH THE MEAN ANNUAL RAINFALL OF THE REGION IS 1100MM, THE DENUDED HILLS WASTE 50 TO 60% OF SAME AS RUNOFF. THE COLLECTION AND STORAGE OF EXCESS MONSOON RAINWATER FROM SMALL HILLY CATCHMENTS BY CONSTRUCTING EARTHEN DAMS AND UTILIZATION OF THE STORED WATER TO STABILISE RAINFED AGRICULTURE HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO TACKLE DROUGHTS. Not AvailableTHE PAPER PRESENTS RESULTS OF A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE CONSERVATION AND PRODUCTION POTENTIAL OF TREE- GRASS ASSOCIATION OF EUCALYPTUS TERETICORNIS ( SMITH) AND A SOD- FORMING PERENNIAL GRASS EUCALYPTUS BINATA ( RETZ) ON A TYPICAL ERODED ALLUVIAL SOIL IN THE SHIWALIK FOOTHILL AREA RECEIVING 1100mm OF MEAN ANNUAL RAINFALL AND HAVING SUB- TROPICAL CLIMATE. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT OVERALL MONETARY RETURNS FROM TREE- GRASS ASSOCIATION WERE 3-4 TIMES HIGHER THAN RAINFED FIELD CROPS . THERE IS NO SOIL LOSS I 6 OUT OF 8 YEARS FROM THE STUDY PLOT. IN TWO HIGH RAINFALL SEASONS, THE RUNOFF WAS ONLY 0.63 AND 1.66% , SOIL LOSS 0.17 AND 0.26 t/ha N LOSS WAS 2 AND 0.8 kg/ha . THE AREA AFFECTED BY TORRENTS IN HOSHIARPUR DISTRICT OF PUNJAB INCREASED FROM 194 KM2 IN 1852 TO 2000 KM2 IN 1939. DEFORESTATION AND LAND DEGRADATION IN SHIWALIKS WAS CAUSED BY HEAVY LIVESTOCK AND HUMAN POPULATION PRESSURE AND IS VIVIDLY DESCRIBED IN PUBLISHED LITERATURE BY BRITISH WORKERS (HOLLAND, 1926; GLOVER 1944; GORRIE , 1946). THE EARLIER TORRENT CONTROL MEASURES INCLUDED LEGISLATIVE PROVISIONS FOR LIVESTOCK EVICTION, CONTROL OVER GRAZING AND ILLICIT CUTTING OF VEGETATION , CHANGES IN ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP TO ENHANCE THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF FOREST DEPARTMENT , PLANTING OF SUITABLE LOCAL TREES, GRASSES AND BUSHES FOR CATCHMENT TREATMENT AND STREAM BANK PROTECTION, SOIL CONSERVATION MEASURES INCLUDING FIELD BUNDING AND SAFE DISPOSAL OF EXCESS RAINWATER FROM ARABLE LANDS OF THE CATCHMENTS AND FORMATION OF COOPERATIVE "CHOE RECLAMATION SOCIETIES" .
