After a short introduction concerning the form/function interplay in the inflection system of German, the case morphology is considered, with particular attention to three changing tendencies: 1) the nouns loose their segmental morphs (especially in the Genitive Singular) and the definite article is given the function of case marker; 2) a case is substituted for another case and 3) a concurrent construction is substituted for a case (e.g. "von + Dative" as substitute for the Genitive). These changes serve also to reduce redundance and to improve the analytic design of the grammatical system

Locating universal features of translation behaviour through multimedia translation studies

    No full text
Translation is attracting increasing interest as its central role in crosscultural communication becomes ever more apparent in our rapidly evolving world. Since contemporary media in its manifold expressions not only reflect but also direct transcultural contacts and exchanges, it is not surprising that multimedia translation is a major area of study today. The two areas of multimedia translation research which are proving most productive from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view reflect the two principal senses in which the term "multimedia" is currently being used: film translation, in the semiotic sense of conveying meaning via a number of semiotic systems, and computer-based corpora studies, in the technical sense of exploiting the facilities offered by information technology. A theoretical point of contact between the two areas of study is the search for universal features of translation behaviour based on the observation and description of translation-specific phenomena. As a contribution to the current debate on whether a general theory of translation is possible, necessary or even advisable, the present paper suggests that it is an essential frame of reference for the development of the discipline and for the integration of descriptive and applied aspects. One pathway towards establishing a comprehensive translation theory is to ascertain the specificity of translation as a form of crosscultural communication by identifying universal features of translation behaviour that transcend language-specific problems issues

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
