Tool use induces complex and flexible plasticity of human body representations

    No full text
Plasticity of body representation fundamentally underpins human tool use. Recent studies have demonstrated remarkably complex plasticity of body representation in humans, showing that such plasticity: (1) occurs flexibly across multiple time-scales, and (2) involves multiple body representations responding differently to tool use. Such findings reveal remarkable sophistication of body plasticity in humans, suggesting that Vaesen may overestimate the similarity of such mechanisms in humans and non-human primates

From statistical regularities in multisensory inputs to peripersonal space representation and body ownership: Insights from a neural network model

Peripersonal space (PPS), the interface between the self and the environment, is represented by a network of multisensory neurons with visual (or auditory) receptive fields anchored to specific body parts, and tactile receptive fields covering the same body parts. Neurophysiological and behavioural features of hand PPS representation have been previously modelled through a neural network constituted by one multisensory population integrating tactile inputs with visual/auditory external stimuli. Reference frame transformations were not explicitly modelled, as stimuli were encoded in pre-computed hand-centred coordinates. Here we present a novel model, aiming to overcome this limitation by including a proprioceptive population encoding hand position. We confirmed behaviourally the plausibility of the proposed architecture, showing that visuo-proprioceptive information is integrated to enhance tactile processing on the hand. Moreover, the network's connectivity was spontaneously tuned through a Hebbian-like mechanism, under two minimal assumptions. First, the plasticity rule was designed to learn the statistical regularities of visual, proprioceptive and tactile inputs. Second, such statistical regularities were simply those imposed by the body structure. The network learned to integrate proprioceptive and visual stimuli, and to compute their hand-centred coordinates to predict tactile stimulation. Through the same mechanism, the network reproduced behavioural correlates of manipulations implicated in subjective body ownership: the invisible and the rubber hand illusion. We thus propose that PPS representation and body ownership may emerge through a unified neurocomputational process; the integration of multisensory information consistently with a model of the body in the environment, learned from the natural statistics of sensory inputs

Equivalent circuit of FET active loads for non-linear applications

    Get PDF
FET-based active loads have been fabricated and tested, and their equivalent circuit extracted for linear and non-linear applications. The extraction procedure requires the availability of an equivalent three-terminal FET device for accurate model identification. The model proves to be easy to extract, accurate and general

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Charatterisation of active loads for MMIC’s

    No full text
Active loads have been fabricated and tested, and their characterisation addressed for use in microwave CAD programs. The first results show that non-ideal (parasitic) effects are present that can easily be evaluated. Comparison with a three-terminal FET structure shows that a characterisation in terms of an equivalent circuit is feasible, and suggests a possible procedure for the extraction

A new method for active device load equivalent circuit extraction for MMICs

Active device loads for monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) have been extensively studied and a new procedure for the extraction of their equivalent circuit has been developed. The procedure requires the availability of a coplanar three-terminal device for accurate model extraction. The new procedure is accurate, general, and easy to apply. Its validity has been demonstrated by extracting a scalable bias-dependent small-signal equivalent circuit of PHEMT-based active device loads up to 40 GHz. A good agreement between measured and modeled data has been obtained, confirming the validity and the accuracy of the proposed metho
