L’assenza di opere di pronto intervento: l’evoluzione del danno nelle chiese a seguito del danno negli edifici del Centro Italia

The earthquakes that shook the Center of Italy has pointed out the influence of time in emergency operations, especially if we put our attention on cultural heritage and in particular on churches. In many cases the protection of churches was disregarded despite the high number of damage survey and operational judgement. The sequence of high magnitude events after the August 24 first shock produced a damage worsening, sometimes a irremediable damage. In this paper for some churches of Amatrice, the increase of damage after October and January mainshocks are shown, highlighting how the simple emergency intervention needed could be easily performed

CONSOLIDATION AND RESTORATION OF HISTORICAL HERITAGE: THE FLAVIAN AMPHITHEATER IN ROME

The recovery and retrofitting techniques adopted for historical structures and archaeological sites face an apparent dichotomy between conservation of constructions and the safety of users. Literatures show several examples where the current day structural safety of historical constructions, gets defined by the nature of past interventions, the compatibility of materials and elements used in retrofitting. The adopted interventions were, in their time, considered innovative, but over the years their compatibility and reversibility leave the historic constructions structurally vulnerable. For these reasons, a careful understanding of the structural systems is fundamental for the implementation of appropriate retrofitting solutions. Especially for monuments and Archaeological sites the objective to be achieved has to be clear, avoiding destructive investigation tests. In this work the instabilities caused by a consolidation intervention on some travertine columns in a sector of the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as "Colosseum “in Rome, are critically analysed. The current consolidation operations are compared to the previous one. The restoration activity involves in-depth diagnosis process: the historical analysis of the failures and restorations of that area of the Colosseum, a survey of the crack pattern and an indirect investigation on the travertine of the columns. Subsequently the various data coming from the knowledge phase are elaborated, in order to have a correct interpretation of the causes triggering the failure and guide the choice of the most correct retrofitting techniques

Image-based representations for efficient rendering and editing

Over the years, technological improvement has led to the ability to acquire, create and store vast amounts of geometrical and appearance data to use in graphical applications. Nevertheless, efficiently creating images when using such large amounts of data remains an ongoing topic of research, given the computational resources required. This dissertation will focus on a particular kind of algorithms in order to tackle this problem: image-based representations.Entities represented in a virtual 3-dimensional world can be projected into a regular 2-dimensional grid to form an image. This results in a much more compact, albeit incomplete, representation of the original information, since an image is a piece-wise constant discretization of the underlying data. Nevertheless, computing properties of the 3-dimensional data via its 2-dimensional projection is much more efficient. Still, it is important to understand when and how to use these types of representations, since the discretization of the original data can lead to artifacts in the computed results. This work will focus on three key aspects of computer-graphics algorithms where using appropriate image-based representations can result in increased performance: memory requirements, computational efficiency, and interactivity. To do so, it will describe image-based solutions to different relevant problems in the field of computer graphics. Firstly, by exploring how using 2-dimensional intermediate representation can reduce memory requirements for storing large static shadow information in comparison to state-of-the-art voxel representations. Secondly, a hierarchical image-based approach for efficiently computing diffraction patterns will be demonstrated, which can outperform FFT-based solutions. Lastly, an efficient interactive optimization method for editing disparity when creating stereographic images will be described. These algorithms will be described and evaluated in detail, in order to give the reader insight into the usage of image-based representations

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

La messa in sicurezza dei beni monumentali a seguito dell’evento sismico del 30 ottobre 2016: il caso di Norcia

The architectural heritage of Central Italy has been severely damaged by the August-October 2016 earthquakes. The historical centre of the City of Norcia was one of the areas most affected by this seismic event, therefore, right after the magnitude 6.5 earthquake of October 30th, emergency structural interventions have been carried out to preserve two of the main monuments of the town: the Civic Tower and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Argentea. The emergency interventions have been commissioned by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio dell’Umbria. Temporary structural safety measures have been defined to safeguard the monuments from further collapses and damages in order to maintain the architectural elements that survived from the strong seismic events and to restore public access to the roads adjacent to the damaged monuments waiting for the beginning of the definitive restoration and seismic retrofitting works. The emergency interventions, carried out by the National Fire Corps, have been designed in phases in order to guarantee the operators safety at every stage of the work. This paper is focused on the design criteria and the operational phases that led to the definition and realization of the temporary safety interventions for the two monuments
