Allelopathy is a naturally occurring ecological phenomenon in which the livingorganisms produce and release the biochemicals (allelochemicals) in the environmentthat affect the growth, development, reproduction, and survival of otherliving organisms in the surrounding environment. For field crops, the phenomenonof allelopathy can be exploited in the form of intercropping, use ofcover crops, mulching, crop rotations, and use of plant water extracts alone orin combination with reduced doses of herbicides to provide effective controlof the agricultural pests and diseases. For the control of insect pests (field andstorage insect pests), the use of allelopathic plant water extracts and the powderof allelopathic plants may be quite useful. The allelochemicals affect thegrowth of unwanted plants (e.g., weeds) through changes in the cell structure,inhibition of cell elongation/division, disruption of membrane structures, anddisruption of water and nutrient uptake and the process of photosynthesis. Thephenomenon of allelopathy is eco-friendly, and it may help significantly reducethe usage of pesticides. Thus, the phenomenon of allelopathy provides an attractiveecological alternative to pesticides for controlling the pests and diseases ofthe agricultural crops. In this chapter, we have discussed the mechanismof allelochemicals for growth inhibition in plants and the role of crop rotation,allelopathic mulches, allelopathic cover crops, intercrops, and allelopathic waterextracts (alone or with reduced doses of herbicides) in weed management. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Hybrid Fingerprint Recognition Using Minutiae and Shape
This chapter presents a novel minutiae matching method that uses a thin-plate spline model to describe elastic distortions in fingerprints. The thin-plate spline model is estimated using a local and a global matching stage. After registration of the fingerprints according to the estimated model, the number of matching minutiae can be counted using very tight tolerance boxes. For deformed fingerprints, the algorithm gives considerably higher matching scores compared to rigid matching algorithms, while only taking 100 ms on a 1GHz P-III machine. The additional step of shape matching after elimination of the elastic deformations helps to reduce the error rates further. Furthermore, it is shown that the observed deformations are different from those described by theoretical models proposed in the literature. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Cybersecurity analysts rely on vast volumes of security event data to predict, identify, characterize, and deal with security threats. These analysts must understand and make sense of these huge datasets in order to discover patterns which lead to intelligent decision making and advance warnings of possible threats, and this ability requires automation. Big data analytics and artificial intelligence can improve cyber defense. Big data analytics methods are applied to large data sets that contain different data types. The purpose is to detect patterns, correlations, trends, and other useful information. Artificial intelligence provides algorithms that can reason or learn and improve their behavior, and includes semantic technologies. A large number of automated systems are currently based on syntactic rules which are generally not sophisticated enough to deal with the level of complexity in this domain. An overview of artificial intelligence and big data technologies in cyber defense is provided, and important areas for future research are identified and discussed
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. MedMetrics: biometrics passports in medical and clinical healthcare that enable AI and blockchain
The term biometrics was defined to suggest any measurable biological and biomedical metrics that can be used to identify and confirm the uniqueness of individuals. In this chapter, we would like to introduce an emerging area of biometrics, MedMetrics, that combines patient and drug information managed in coded passports to keep medical information accessible, safe and fraud-resistance. Medmetics includes medical and biological biometrics of patients based on their electronic health records, International Classification of Disease codes, Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical codes, Defined Daily Doses, time-series test results, and personalizsed biological data. By combining the blockchain technology, Medimetrics enables sensitive data sharing in between different clinical settings, allowing monitoring patients’ health and care, as well as avoiding identification-related medical mistakes or frauds. MedMetrics Blockchain Passport can be used to identify patients and confirm their previous health conditions without the right of modifying or removing previous records. Medmetrics can revolutionary change the user demographic, shift safety restrictions, define new user applications, and encourage ethical AI regulations in medical science and health care.
