    On Barthes’ biography

    No full text
This article presents an interview with Tiphaine Samoyault, author of Roland Barthes, Biographie (Éditions du Seuil, 2015). There is always a difficulty in approaching the biography of Roland Barthes, who famously gave us the thesis of the ‘death of the author’. Nonetheless, Samoyault’s lengthy study can be considered the closest thing to an ‘official’ biography. Unlike other biographers, she was given access to and granted permission to cite from a wide range of private papers and materials. This inside view has not stopped her from detailing some of the more sensitive sides of Barthes’ life, and importantly she has been able to reassess aspects of his writings and relationship to other key thinkers of the time and the wider politics. As part of the interview, various extracts from the biography are woven into the dialogue, allowing those unfamiliar with it to gain more direct access to the book itself

Monologic epistolary fiction of the 20th and 21st centuries

Long fictions composed of one uninterrupted letter – monologic epistolary fictions – are underrepresented in critical discourse, and frequently shunted more or less overtly beyond its margins. Their existence is brought to light here by one play and fourteen novels in French, English, Italian and German, ranging from 1902 (Gide) to 2011 (Norman) via a cast of authors including Yourcenar, Coetzee, Amis and Celestini. This study aims firstly to fill the critical lacuna, establishing the dimensions of this new sub- genre. It measures the breadth of the formal definitions of the single-letter epistolary novel, the length of its inscription in literary history, and the depth conferred upon it by critical discourse about real letters, the letter-novel genre and a certain epistolary quality to be found in all literature, which our novels set themselves up to reflect and refract. Our rather disparate corpus of texts reveals the interest of this technical framework, haunted as it is by recurrent themes which illuminate the characteristics of monological epistolary writing. Firstly, the theme of one's own death (Yourcenar, Coetzee, Bernstein, Robinson, Amis) shines a light on the physical structure of any text, rendered visible in the format of the letter; this conjunction suggests the idea of the text as corpse. A series of apocalyptic universes complicates this rather empirical portrait, which reads like the symbol of the Death of the Author; novels by Coetzee, Amis and Auster use complex portraits of fictional time to suggest the possibility of coincidence, overlap, meetings both epistolary and literary. These two chapters set up the terms of a final debate concerning literary communication, investigated via the symbol of the double (Gide, Coeztee, Bernstein, Celestini). After the narrative of the text itself and the implied drama of the letter's trajectory, a pragmatic dimension comes to light. This final analysis allows us to investigate the ethics of correspondence, and the letter as one key to understanding those of fiction itself

Reference to Flaubert in contemporary writers is not like a return to the author. It does not appear as a recollection but as an evidence that can follow various directions, whether the chosen route be Bouvard et Pécuchet, L’Éducation sentimentale or Madame Bovary. This article traces these three approaches, which also allow an overall view of contemporary French literature

Oriental lives, European lives : biography and Orient in the works of Thomas Mann, Romain Rolland and Stefan Zweig

This thesis offers to study the life stories of some Russian and Indian personalities written in the first half of the 20th century, through a corpus made up of referential and fictional texts by Romain Rolland, Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig. The starting point of my reflection is the comparison of three texts on Tolstoy’s life: Romain Rolland’s Life of Tolstoy (1911), Thomas Mann’s Goethe and Tolstoy (1922) and Stefan Zweig’s “Tolstoy”, published in the triptych Three poets, of their life (1928). Added to this is an essay by Stefan Zweig, “Dostoyevsky” in the triptych Three Masters (1920), as well as the Indian biographies of Romain Rolland: Mahatma Gandhi (1924), The Life of Ramakrishna (1929) and The Life of Vivekananda (1930). Finally, two fictional biographies of European composers complete this corpus and define its chronological limits: Jean-Christophe (1904-1912) by Romain Rolland and Doctor Faustus (1948) by Thomas Mann. I offer to combine the study of biographical writing with that of the relationship between East and West at a time when the reception of Russian literature and the image of India in Europe is being renewed. The biography integrates by re-evaluating the clichés linked to the East, the biographer placing himself as an authority figure who can decide on the access of marginal personalities to the global intellectual and literary world, essentially made up of Western figures and conceptualized in European categories. This work associates a comparative method and monographic developments with an externalist approach: the study of the use of biography in History, psychoanalysis or anthropology as well as the new concepts provided by postcolonial studies or subaltern studies allow us to shed a new light on the biographical corpus by questioning the relevance of the use of Western categories of thought to tell the story of a Russian or Indian personality

    Get PDF
The aim of this thesis is to study the stakes and strategies behind the apparition of fear in novels and video games. Through a comparative approach, I intend to theorize the bridging of these mediums and the paradigms structuring scary fictions. At the core of this work lie the ability of video games and literature to create uncertainty and strangeness from a rigorous code (be it textual, digital or game rules) during the interaction with the reader/gamer and the conflicting interdependence between mimesis (as a shaping of reality) and phantasia (as a resurgence of a reality that defies reason). As fear’s catalyst, the monster is at the heart of my formal analysis. The synthesis of a large corpus allows for an identification of four archetypes from which the various manifestations of monstrosity spread: the barbarian, the gorgon, the phantom and the chimera. These figures personify the dark corners of western culture. The barbarian embodies the confrontation with an alien whom invades a familiar environment as well as the violent and chaotic base upon which rests civilization. The gorgon represents the radical otherness, fascinating and terrifying. To go near it is to venture out of the world and to run the risk of being contaminated by the monster, becoming unable to go back home. The phantom conveys the stakes of the haunting, of an undead past that is still part of the present. As the baring of a tearing in time continuity, it is to be reintegrated through the solving of the enigma it poses. Ultimately, the chimera is the one who transgresses categories. With its numerous faces, it defies the rational organisation of reality. Finally, a study of the author’s figure, of the adaptation process and of the fictional worlds extensions offers an outlook on the mobility of monsters and their capacity to cross borders, whether they are creative intents, mediatic frames of worlds of fiction. These conclusions are based on a dialogue between literary works and video games selected in a diverse corpus that aims to merge analytical thoroughness and an encompassing vision

Writing, Reading, Translating between Languages : Challenges and Practices of Multilingual Poetics

    No full text
This dissertation develops new approaches to studying multilingual poetics by considering its mechanisms through three different modes of experience with language: writing, reading and translating. Through a corpus of experimental works by Nicole Brossard, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Raymond Federman and Katalin Molnár, it aims to comprehend the poetic activity, extending from the conception of the text to its reception and to other forms of continuance, of literature between languages. From individuation through the creation of a language within writing, to reading, translation and intermedial transposition, this dissertation explores, through close readings, the way difference exerts its force from within the language(s) of a work, affects its form, and expresses its becoming. Firstly, in analyzing the corpus alongside the context of its production and considering the writers’ archives, the dissertation puts forth the idea of textualization as creation of a language. This language, rather than telling of an event in the writer’s life, expresses it through what it does both to national and normative languages and to readers, including through its orality (the body in writing). The writers’ languages are therefore performative in that they speak of themselves, although never fully for themselves, and generate new spaces that incite challenging but specific reading and translational practices. Secondly, the regimes of signifying enacted in of these works are considered through a reader reception study, which confirms the ambiguous and polysemic nature of multilingual works that makes them difficult to situate in any given space. Finally, the corpus is broached by way of what exceeds it: the actualization of its otherness, which takes form through translation, be it toward other languages or toward other artistic forms created in response to the corpus. Through these three approaches, the dissertation analyzes the articulation between poetics and memory in writing, reading and translating, three activities that multilingual poetics, in intertwining them, compels us to reconsider
