This study analyzes, in the contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco's narrative Novecento: un monologue, the establishment of a suspension in which it is possible to narrate, to tell stories. That suspension is created by the protagonist Novecento, a pianist who has lived his whole life on a ship and knows the world by means of its passengers' narratives, which resonate in his music and in the narrative of his own story, imparted to his friend Tim, the character-narrator of the plot. Based mainly on Walter Benjamin's studies, we consider the poverty of experience to which man has been subjected in modernity, the need to think History from a questioning point of view and the possibility of resistance through the act of telling stories. Novecento is the being who makes possible a "resonance" (in the sense given by Jean Luc-Nancy) through which narratives can be heard, shared and circulated

Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

REASONABLENESS: OLD VIRTUE FOR A NEW ERA. GUEST EDITORS’ PREFACE

    No full text
This special issue examines how the Rawlsian notion of reasonableness is strained by the epistemic and technological dynamics of digital democracy. Digital environments, defined by features such as echo chambers, misinformation, and fragmented public discourse, foster increasingly superficial and reactive forms of political engagement through social media and reduce citizens’ willingness to shoulder the burdens of judgment required by public reason. The contributions explore pedagogical strategies grounded in civic virtue ethics, culturally situated or weakened models of reasonableness, and non-ideal approaches introducing asymmetrical epistemic and civic duties. Together, they show why reasonableness remains normatively significant despite the pressures it faces today

Intraoperative Neurophysiology During Intramedullary Spinal Cord Tumor Surgery

    No full text
Intramedullary spinal cord surgery is a particularly challenging field due to the delicate balance between the aim to remove a harmful lesion and the need to preserve the healthy, functional tissue in which the lesion is growing. Over the decades, a spectrum of techniques with the scope to monitor sensory and motor functions during a surgical operation, hence maximizing resection while minimizing damage to the surrounding nervous tissue, have been developed. These techniques are known as intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) and the most common include somatosensory-evoked potentials (SSEPs), transcranial motor-evoked potentials (TcMEPs), free running electromyography (EMG), and D wave monitoring. Along with these, mapping techniques to localize specific functions in the spinal cord can be employed, such as dorsal columns and cortico-spinal tract mapping. The ever-growing experience in using these techniques allowed the development of warning criteria that are currently used in a context of teamwork and efficient communication within the OR team in order to optimize surgical strategy and patient outcomes

Contemporary Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) tend to be discussed mostly regarding the techno-economic arrangements that are expected to spark off a widespread diffusion of low- carbon, self-consumption-based energy systems. RECs’ development, however, also appears to be inexorably linked to the socio-territorial networks in which energy cooperation is embedded. To advance the knowledge about territoriality in REC-building processes, the present study focuses first on the interplay between partnerships, energy systems and the environment at the local level, and it then explores the synergies with spatial-strategy making for energy transitions. The preliminary results of a nationwide research project in Italy are presented as limited to two regions: Apulia and Lombardy
