The Serviço de Aviação da Armada (Navy Air Service), more commonly known as Aviação Naval (Naval Aviation), was created on the 28th September 1917. Although it was activated at that moment in time due to the urgency to establish an effective antisubmarine defence following U-boat attacks along the portuguese coast, Naval Aviation origins are strongly connected to the advent of aviation in Portugal at the dawn of the 20th Century, as well to the drive Sacadura Cabral instilled into it and the initiatives he planned.
Following the Armistice, Sacadura Cabral embarked his Service into some major flights, including the first South Atlantic Air Crossing. This was not only a unique, joyful moment during the Portuguese 1st Republic but also the most remarkable Portuguese aviation achievement, which would only have been surpassed if Sacadura Cabral’s project for the first round-the-world flight had reached fruition. The preparations for this last project triggered a series of events that led to his loss in the North Sea, an occurrence that entailed the end of the most remarkable period in Portuguese Naval Aviation history.
Despite the prestige earned from these great accomplishments, Naval Aviation went through a period where the political context was not always favourable to its existence and the economical one never was. Due to this, it had to fight a constant struggle for survival; how Naval Aviation managed to persevere in such a hostile environment, with a huge lack of resources in all its functional elements, especially personnel and infrastructures, is even more remarkable. But it was this struggle for survival that prompted its leader, Sacadura Cabral, to seek opportunities to the value of his Service, which led to some of the most renowned Portuguese aviation achievements

Sacadura Cabral and the Dawn of Portuguese Aviation
Sacadura Cabral was one of the two Portuguese navigators that crossed by air the South Atlantic in the beginning of the 20th century. From 1901 to 1915 Sacadura was at Mozambique and Angola where he developed geodetic and geographical missions of the greatest importance for Portuguese interest at Africa. With the Great World War requirements as a Navy Officer with 34 years old he decided to serve Portugal at the Aviation. In 1915 he went to France and obtained its pilot license. In 1916 Sacadura returned to Portugal and begun its instructor pilot career. He developed the “path corrector” which he created to compensate the drift caused by wind. In 1922 Sacadura made the First Air cross from Europe to South Atlantic. In 1923 he proposes himself to make an attempt to the First Air Circumnavigation Journey. He developed all its possible efforts to initiate this journey in March of 1924; however some delays had forced him to postpone the journey. Sacadura received important official medals and prizes, including the PhD Honoris Causa from the Universities of Lisbon and Oporto. In 1924 he died before he could carry out its Circumnavigation Air Journey.

As far as man's ways of locomotion are concerned, we can easily observe that these have not been stagnated over time. In fact, several stages have been overcoming according to the evolutionary path of the human needs that were arising and also with the technological impulse that has being developing.
In a gentle analogy, we can see that the means of transportation relate to the growth of a newborn, that due it’s course it will learn to crawl, to walk, to run, and, finally, to swim. The same happened with the evolution of our transportation means.
Initially man began to move only on land, since this was the primary way to transport goods necessary for their survival from one region to another. As an example, we can mention the development of the railway system and trains. Later, the evolution of knowledge allied with the ambition to progress, flourished the aquatic transportation with the human desire to meet and discover new worlds. In the very beginning, all the navigation was essentially in view of land, however over time several methods of maritime navigation have been developed and oceanic voyages have begun.
However, the human race did not rest until he found a form of quick transportation between two distant points. Thus, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the world of aviation emerges and the human being was able fly for the first time.
The first Air Crossing of the South Atlantic was held in 1922, departing on May 30 from Lisbon, Portugal and arriving on June 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was done by air by two Navy Officers, Sacadura Cabral, the pilot, and Gago Coutinho, the navigator.
The main objective of this scientific investigation, is the study of Portuguese triumph in the scope of Air Navigation, considering that it was the first event in which air was navigated with scientific rigor. In this dissertation we have studied in depth and in detail, the methods of air navigation developed and used by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral.
Finally, we will also review and correct some types of methods presented in the final reports and we will demonstrate, its performance
