Structure and dynamics in oligomannose-type oligosaccharides. Biochemistry

ABSTRACT: Using a combination of 'H N M R nuclear Overhauser effect measurements, molecular orbital calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations, we have determined the tertiary structure and dynamic properties of the oligomannose oligosaccharide Mana6(Mana3)Mana6(Mana3)Manp4GlcNAc~4GlcNAc. While the calculated potential surfaces for the majority of the glycosidic linkages could be described by a single deep potential well, similar calculations for the M a n a l d M a n a and Mana 1-6Manp linkages described a diffuse, shallow well, suggesting that a larger degree of flexibility exists about the latter. These conclusions are supported by the results of molecular dynamics simulations, which suggest that the N M R data should be interpreted in terms of a degree of flexibility about the M a n a l d M a n p and Manal-6Mana linkages. In contrast, a similar series of investigations suggests that the conformation of the M a n a l d M a n B linkage in Mana2Man6(Mana2Man~3)Mana6(Mana2Mana2Mana3)Man~4GlcNAc~4GlcNAc is more restricted, resulting in an overall structure that is "restrained". High-resolution *H nuclear magnetic resonance is a well-established method for the derivation of the three-dimensional structures of biomolecules in solution. The use of two-di-mensional coherence-transfer methods such as 'H-lH corre

Co jest źródłem satysfakcji gracza? O kluczowej roli wymiany autystycznej w grach komputerowych

Video games phenomena is something entirely new in mankind history. Yet it haven’t preceded our nature so it still should be readily explained by some basic terms. In this case the author suggests that the exchange is the fundament of players action and the source of their satisfaction. Using Mises (economist’s), Homans (sociologist’s) and positive psychologists’ (character strengths) legacy, deduction process takes place and an Internet questionnaire is being conducted. Results obtained from 669 players are analysed and used to verify the main hypothesis of the text and – at the end – to affirm it

Ribosome clearance by FusB-type proteins mediates resistance to the antibiotic fusidic acid

    No full text
Resistance to the antibiotic fusidic acid (FA) in the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus usually results from expression of FusB-type proteins (FusB or FusC). These proteins bind to elongation factor G (EF-G), the target of FA, and rescue translation from FA-mediated inhibition by an unknown mechanism. Here we show that the FusB family are two-domain metalloproteins, the C-terminal domain of which contains a four-cysteine zinc finger with a unique structural fold. This domain mediates a high-affinity interaction with the C-terminal domains of EF-G. By binding to EF-G on the ribosome, FusB-type proteins promote the dissociation of stalled ribosome?EF-G?GDP complexes that form in the presence of FA, thereby allowing the ribosomes to resume translation. Ribosome clearance by these proteins represents a highly unusual antibiotic resistance mechanism, which appears to be fine-tuned by the relative abundance of FusB-type protein, ribosomes, and EF-G

Haraway's metaphor of the vampire. Haraway's theory enables us to look at the well-described conflicts and tensions of the novel from a new angle, making us rethink our attitude to the Other, while preserving the text's infamous opacity of meaning. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore briefly the motif of the vampire, which is already there in Brontes text; and to comment on how the metaphor of the vampire - passing through Haraway's reformulation - affects the novel's message. As a result, this new analytical and interpretative perspective allows us to take a fresh look at one of the Victorian classics when teaching it at history of English literature course at the university level.Uniwersytet w BiałymstokuBartsch L, DiPalma c., Sells L., Witnessing the Postmodern Jeremiad: (Mis)understanding Donna Haraway's Method oj Inquiry, "Configurations", 2001, VoI. 9 (l).Brontë E., Wuthering Heights, Oxford and New York 1989.Gilbert S. Perceptual change through transnational experience : American exchange students and HIV/AIDS

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references (p. 83-97).Includes abstract. This thesis considers the power of United States popular media to construct both conceptions of "Africa" and knowledge of HN / AIDS among exchange students in Cape Town, South Africa. Arguing that the reification of myths about Africa influenced respondents' arrival stories and initial experiences, I exhibit how being in South Africa produced very different associations, particularly with regard to intimate relationships. Drawing on theoretical work that looks at the tendency to imagine disease as a product of "foreign" or "other" people, and building on respondents' imaginary Africa, the conceptual linking of Africa to AIDS is highlighted in their discussions of expectations. The linking of HN / AIDS to Africa affects respondents decision to study in South Africa, as well as their initial interactions; highlighting the tendency of respondents to describe their motivation for studying in South Africa a result of a sense of "responsibility" they feel to "save" Africans from AIDS. Respondents' urge to "save" is in tension with their initial tendency to distance themselves from HIV / AIDS in Africa through an imaginary matrix of immunity exhibited through rhetorics of difference. Evolving from respondents' motivation to "save," a discussion of "moral tourism" and ''voluntouring'' is explored. The thesis argues that the combination of voluntary services and living in Cape Town has the ability to change perceptions that were previously used as explanation for high levels of contraction rates of HIV / AIDS on the African continent and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa
