The Economic Benefits of Investing in Clean Energy: How the Economic Stimulus Program and New Legislation Can Boost U.S. Economic Growth and Employment

    No full text
This study, commissioned by the Center for American Progress, examines broader economic considerations—jobs, incomes, and economic growth—through the lens of two government initiatives this year by the Obama administration and Congress. The first is the set of clean-energy provisions incorporated within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The second is the proposed American Clean Energy and Security Act which is now before Congress. Our analysis in this paper shows that these measures operating together can generate roughly 150billionperyearinnewcleanenergyinvestmentsintheUnitedStatesoverthenextdecade.Thisestimated150 billion per year in new clean-energy investments in the United States over the next decade. This estimated 150 billion in new spending annually includes government funding but is notably dominated by private-sector investments. We estimate this sustained expansion in clean-energy investments can generate a net increase of about 1.7 million jobs. This expansion in job opportunities can continue as long as the economy maintains a commitment to clean-energy investments in the $150 billion per year range. If clean-energy investments expand still faster, overall job creation will increase correspondingly. These investment could, therefore, not only guide us out of our fossil-fuel dependent crisis, but serve as a powerful engine of economic recovery and long-term economic vigor in the U.S. >> Read more about "The Economic Benefits of Investing in Clean Energy" and download state fact sheets>> Download "The Economic Benefits of Investing in Clean Energy"

New Critical Perspectives on the U.S. and the Post-WWII Global Economy: Brenner, Harvey, and Pollin

    No full text
In the current economic crisis, left and progressive political economics has enjoyed renewed attention and credibility, both inside and outside of academia. In this paper, Merlin Chowkwanyun surveysrecent contributions to this literature by Robert Brenner, David Harvey, and Robert Pollin, summarizing key arguments and identifying research questions and heuristics for further inquiry. The author considers how these contributions might help to forge more fruitful dialogue between analyses of social movements and economic structures, too often studied apart. The paper stresses the importance of retaining the robust critical power of the left critique while avoiding the fatalism, sectarianism, and “automatic” theories of social change that have bedeviled the left’s recent past.

“That Was Poe, The Great American Hack”: Retracing Echoes of Poe’s Gothic Tales in Stephen King’s The Shining

ABSTRACT: Burton Pollin argues that, despite Edgar Allan Poe‟s evident legacy in Stephen King‟s fiction, Poe‟s influence on the writings of this author from Maine has often been overlooked and even ignored by Poe scholars. Pollin suggests that King‟s most acclaimed horror novel The Shining (1977) was mostly inspired by Poe‟s gothic tales “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Taking Pollin‟s premise as a point of departure, this article aims to retrace examples of transtextuality – to use Gérard Genette‟s term − between King‟s novel The Shining and some of Poe‟s gothic tales, thus following Pollin‟s initial proposal, but with the view to analyse different passages from King‟s novel in comparison with other Poe‟s tales that have been hardly mentioned in relation to The Shining.RESUMEN: Burton Pollin defiende que, pese al evidente legado que Edgar Allan Poe atesora en la ficción de Stephen King, la influencia que Poe ha ejercido en las obras del escritor de Maine a menudo ha sido menospreciada o includo ignorada por parte de los estudiosos de la obra de Poe.

Is Full Employment Possible Under Globalization? (revised)

    No full text
To honor the life work of Professor Sumner Rosen, this lecture examines approaches to promoting full employment at decent jobs within our contemporary era of globalization. The lecture briefly summarizes the theories of unemployment of Marx, Friedman, Keynes and Kalecki. It then addresses the meaning of full employment within the alternative theories and under different historical and country settings. It next considers the issue of the inflation/unemployment trade-off, and the Meidner-Rehn Swedish approach to inflation control under full employment. It concludes by presenting a sketch of something approximating a full employment program for the contemporary U.S. economy, focusing on ending the Iraq war and reallocation public spending toward health care, education, and green growth.full employment, globalization, theories of unemployment, inflation

Developing IoT Spark-Streaming Applications by Means of streamLoader

    No full text
Nowadays there is a great interest in the development of cross-domain IoT applications that are able to gather an high number of observations taken from sensors belong to heterogeneous IoT platforms and efficiently combine them in flows that can be exploited for conducting analysis. However, their realization poses several concerns. From one side, graphical interfaces are needed for facilitating the specification and composition of the data acquisition operations. From the other side, facilities are required to manage big data streams, to check the application correctness, and to set up and configure clusters of machines. Starting from the graphical facilities of the StreamLoader system for the development of Data Acquisition Plans (DAPs) from sensors belonging to heterogeneous IoT platforms, in this paper we show the approach developed for translating DAPs in a Spark-Streaming application. Experiments are shown for assessing the scalability of the developed applications
