Agostino, le emozioni e il discorso contro l'eros nella Genesi secondo il Breviari d'amor di Matfre Ermengaud
The essay focuses on the anti-erotic and misogynist argument in the section of Matfre Ermengaud’s Breviari d’Amor inspired by Genesis. The aim is to demonstrate that in the narrative of the Fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden the Occitan author draws on the teachings of Augustine and in particular capitalizes on his knowledge of the De Genesi ad litteram
Model-Independent Constraints on New Physics in Transitions
We provide a comprehensive model-independent analysis of rare decays involving the b --> s transition to put constraints on dimension-six Delta(F)=1 effective operators. The constraints are derived from all the available up-to-date experimental data from the B-factories, CDF and LHCb. The implications and future prospects for observables in b --> s l+l- and b --> s nu nu transitions in view of improved measurements are also investigated. The present work updates and generalises previous studies providing, at the same time, a useful tool to test the flavour structure of any theory beyond the SM.We provide a comprehensive model-independent analysis of rare decays involving the b --> s transition to put constraints on dimension-six Delta(F)=1 effective operators. Retrospective observational study on the effects and tolerability of flutamide in a large population of patients with various kinds of hirsutism over a 15-year period.
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term effects and tolerability of flutamide in hirsute women. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the largest report, concerning the population studied and the duration of treatment, in evaluating flutamide use in hirsutism treatment.
Design, Patients and Methods: Over the 15-year period which spans from January 1991 to January 2006, a total of 414 premenopausal women with hirsutism of different etiopathogenesis received yearly reducing doses (250, 125 and 62.5 mg/day) of flutamide alone or combined with oral contraceptive for a period varying from at least three years to eight years and more of treatment. Clinical and endocrine evaluations were assessed half-yearly and yearly, respectively, in the first three years of study, and yearly in the following years. Liver function evaluations were quarterly.
Results: The both groups of patients under flutamide therapy showed a marked decrease in hirsutism scores after 12 months compared with basal values. The maximum drug effect was after 2 years, and was maintained during the following years of treatment. Androgens were strongly suppressed during treatment. During the first year of treatment 6.0% of patients abandoned the study for hepatic disorders related with the drug. During the following years with the lowest treatment regimen none patient abandoned the study for hepatic discomfort.
Conclusions: Flutamide is a satisfactory therapeutic regimen of any form of hirsutism in the long run. Moreover, the use of very low doses of flutamide is associated with minimal side-effects and high compliance
This paper focuses on an important 18th Century admirer of Dante Alighieri, Agostino Paradisi the Younger. In 1758, at only twenty-two years of age, Paradisi published an inspired ode in defense of the Comedy so to highlight Dante’s ability to write in a masterly way regarding the divine mysteries, to investigate the depth of the human soul and to draw memorable images. Paradisi composed his poem, entitled Contra the Author of the Pseudo-Virgilian Letters to Lord Canon Ritorni, in reaction to the anonymous publication of the Ten Letters of Virgil (1757) by Saverio Bettinelli. The latter criticized, in these epistles, the Italian poetic tradition and above all the Comedy, a work he accused of obscurity, extravagance, deformity, and tediousness. For the rest of his life Paradisi would continue to praise Dante. This article ends with the full text of the apologetic ode written by Paradisi.
Effects of removal of the axial methionine heme ligand on the binding of S. cerevisiae iso-1 cytochrome c to cardiolipin.
The cleavage of the axial S(Met)-Fe bond in cytochrome c (cytc) upon binding to
cardiolipin (CL), a glycerophospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane, is one of
the key molecular changes that impart cytc with (lipo)peroxidase activity essential to its
pro-apoptotic function. In this work, UV-VIS, CD, MCD and fluorescence
spectroscopies were used to address the role of the Fe−M80 bond in controlling the
cytc-CL interaction, by studying the binding of the Met80Ala (M80A) variant of S.
cerevisiae iso-1 cytc (ycc) to CL liposomes in comparison with the wt protein [Paradisi
et al. J. Biol. Inorg. Chem. 25 (2020) 467–487]. The results show that the integrity of
the six-coordinate heme center along with the distal heme site containing the Met80
ligand is a not requisite for cytc binding to CL. Indeed, deletion of the Fe-S(Met80)
bond has a little impact on the mechanism of ycc-CL interaction, although it results in
an increased heme accessibility to solvent and a reduced structural stability of the
protein. In particular, M80A features a slightly tighter binding to CL at low CL/cytc ratios
compared to wt ycc, possibly due to the lift of some constraints to the insertion of the
CL acyl chains into the protein hydrophobic core. M80A binding to CL maintains the
dependence on the CL-to-cytc mixing scheme displayed by the wt specie
