La correspondance de D'Alembert avec Gabriel Cramer

    No full text
John Pappas : D'Alembert's correspondence with Gabriel Cramer. The voluminous correspondence of the Swiss mathematician G. Cramer, located in the Bibliothèque publique et universitaire in Geneva, is a rich source of information for the historian of science. The D'Alembert letters are especially interesting because, although there are the expected mathematical discussions, the bulk of the letters deal with literary, cultural and political matters, chiefly becauce Cramer wished such news from Paris. D'Alembert tells him of the latest plays (Voltaire's Sémiramis, Crébillon' s Catilina ), literary productions (L'Esprit des lois, Lettre sur les aveugles — and Diderot's imprisonment at Vincennes), his own publications (Discours préliminaire, Éloge de l'abbé Terr assort, Éléments de musique ) and the controversy between the Encyclopédie and Berthier's Journal de Trévoux. The correspondance ends upon Cramer's death in 1751.Pappas John. La correspondance de D'Alembert avec Gabriel Cramer. In: Dix-huitième Siècle, n°28, 1996. L'Orient. pp. 229-258

They had a dream. Now Trump will scrub the melting pot clean

    No full text
On 20 January, Donald Trump will become the 45th President of the United States. His victory is a definitive break with the vision of America that has prevailed for the past century: a land open to migrants and capable of assimilating different cultures and ethnicities, says Takis S Pappas. The great melting-pot is about to be scrubbed clean, and the checks and balances on presidential power that Americans took for granted will come under strain
