Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

A mercapturic acid is an N-acetylated-S-substituted -L-cysteine in which the substitutive group is generally inert to further enzymic reaction (Wood, 1970). Detoxication of foreign compounds to mercapturic acids in mammals has been known for almost 100 years, however the source of cysteine for conjugation has only recently been positively determined

Critical temperature and interface transparency of N/S/N triple layers: theory and experiment

    Get PDF
The influence of the finite transparency, T{\mathcal T} , of superconductor/normal metal (S/N) interface on the critical temperature of proximity coupled layered structures is investigated in the dirty limit on the basis of the microscopic equations solved exactly by a matrix method. The calculated theoretical curves satisfactory reproduce the experimental dependencies of the critical temperature on the thickness of the superconducting layers in N/S/N trilayers. The relation between the transparency coefficient and the normal metal coherence length is also discussed. The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    Get PDF
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Optimización de losas de hormigón a través del método postensado adherente

    No full text

Experimental investigation into the effect of substrate clamping on the piezoelectric behaviour of thick-film PZT elements

    No full text
This paper details an experimental investigation of the clamping effect associated with thick-film piezoelectric elements printed on a substrate. The clamping effect reduces the measured piezoelectric coefficient, d33, of the film. This reduction is due to the influence of the d31 component in the film when a deformation of the structure occurs, by either the direct or indirect piezoelectric effect. Theoretical analysis shows a reduction in the measured d33 of 62%, i.e. a standard bulk lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-5H sample with a manufacturer specified d33 of 593pC/N would fall to 227.8pC/N. To confirm this effect, the d33 coefficients of five thin bulk PZT-5H samples of 220µm thickness were measured before and after their attachment to a metallized 96% alumina substrate. The experimental results show a reduction in d33 of 74% from 529pC/N to 139pC/N. The theoretical analysis was then applied to existing University of Southampton thick-film devices. It is estimated that the measured d33 value of 131pC/N of the thick-film devices is the equivalent of an unconstrained d33 of 345pC/N

Study of acidic degradation of alkali-activated materials using synthetic C-(N)-A-S-H and N-A-S-H gels

Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are usually recognized having better acid resistance compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC), however, the detailed mechanism has not been well studied due to the complexity of raw materials and hardened matrix. In this study, two typical binding gels in AAMs, sodium aluminum silicate hydrate (N-A-S-H) and calcium (sodium) aluminum silicate hydrate (C-(N)-A-S-H), were chemically prepared by laboratory synthesized aluminosilicate powders. The microstructure and composition evolution of the two gels exposed to sulfuric acid were investigated. The results showed that the C-(N)-A-S-H gel had higher degree of structural order than the N-A-S-H gel, while the N-A-S-H gel showed higher polymerization. The AlIV in N-A-S-H gel transferred completely to AlV during sulfuric acid attack, while trace amount of AlIV was still detected in the exposed C-(N)-A-S-H gels. Both gels had increased silica polymerization degree after exposure to sulfuric acid solution. Due to rapider dealumination of N-A-S-H gel than C-(N)-A-S-H gel, the Si/Al ratio increased much higher in the former. The molecular framework changes of N-A-S-H gel caused by dealumination was found to have less effect on the integrity though than that of C-(N)-A-S-H gel, in which coarse gypsum crystalline grains formed and led to destructive stress in hardened matrix. This paper provides an insight at microstructure level of the two typical gels, which is essential for the manufacturing and application of alkali-activated materials
