Piotr Artomiusz and Michał Marcin Mioduszewski on the Role of a Song in Polish

    No full text
The article attempts at answering the question concerning the role attributed to religious songs in the native language by Piotr Artomiusz, a Lutheran pastor and author of the hymnal, and Michał Marcin Mioduszewski, a Catholic priest and a collector of religious music. Their works – the Hymnal of Artomiusz and the Songbook… of Mioduszewski, played a significant role in the then religious communities and serve as a valuable example of transmission of a religious song in Polish. Statements provided by both authors in their collections allow the author to discuss their purpose; the role of the vernacular and the song in Polish in the liturgy and personal piety; the addressees of the collections, as well as the function of Polish translations of psalms. The juxtaposition of authors’ statements reveals similarities and differences in the perception of language and vernacular song in Church. The examination of those statements is crucial for a better understanding of the role of songs in the native language, especially of the song in Polish that became an important element of the tradition of Polish Lutheranism

SHPA acknowledges financial support from CNPq, CAPES and Fapemig. We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star LkCa 4 within the Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets (MaTYSSE) programme, involving ESPaDOnS at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Despite an age of only 2 Myr and a similarity with prototypical classical T Tauri stars, LkCa 4 shows no evidence for accretion and probes an interesting transition stage for star and planet formation. Large profile distortions and Zeeman signatures are detected in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines of LkCa 4 using Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD), indicating the presence of brightness inhomogeneities and magnetic fields at the surface of LkCa 4. Using tomographic imaging, we reconstruct brightness and magnetic maps of LkCa 4 from sets of unpolarized and circularly polarized LSD profiles. The large-scale field is strong and mainly axisymmetric, featuring a ≃2 kG poloidal component and a ≃1 kG toroidal component encircling the star at equatorial latitudes – the latter making LkCa 4 markedly different from classical T Tauri stars of similar mass and age. The brightness map includes a dark spot overlapping the magnetic pole and a bright region at mid-latitudes – providing a good match to the contemporaneous photometry. We also find that differential rotation at the surface of LkCa 4 is small, typically ≃5.5 times weaker than that of the Sun, and compatible with solid-body rotation. Using our tomographic modelling, we are able to filter out the activity jitter in the radial velocity curve of LkCa 4 (of full amplitude 4.3 km s−1) down to an rms precision of 0.055 km s−1. Looking for hot Jupiters around young Sun-like stars thus appears feasible, even though we find no evidence for such planets around LkCa 4.Peer reviewe

    MAPPINGS OF INVERSE LIMITS REVISITED

conditions for one compact metric space to be a continuous image of another one expressed in terms of their inverse expansions in polyhedra. If each of X and Y is a compacturn, and F: X- • Y is a continuous fimction, then a certain condition is satisfied; if that condition holds for X and Y, then a map G: X- • Y is induced. In this paper, Mioduszewski's results are sharpened, to wit: if F: X- • Y is a map, then a stronger condition is satisfied such that the induced map G is F. A usetiff corollary emerges-an inverse limit characterization of the fixed point property for a map from a compactum into itself. Definitions. Suppose each of X and Y is a sequence of polyhedra. Let, for each i, f•+ • be a continuous mapping from Xi+ • onto Xi; g•+ • be a map from Y/+ • onto IF/; an

The precession of SS433's radio ruff on long timescales

    No full text
Roughly perpendicular to SS433's famous precessing jets is an outflowing "ruff" of radio-emitting plasma, revealed by direct imaging on milli-arcsecond scales. Over the last decade, images of the ruff reveal that its orientation changes over time with respect to a fixed sky co-ordinate grid. For example, during two months of daily observations with the VLBA by Mioduszewski et al. (2004), a steady rotation through ~10 degrees is observed whilst the jet angle changes by ~20 degrees. The ruff reorientation is not coupled with the well-known precession of SS433's radio jets, as the ruff orientation varies across a range of 69 degrees whilst the jet angle varies across 40 degrees, and on greatly differing and non-commensurate timescales. It has been proposed that the ruff is fed by SS433's circumbinary disk, discovered by a sequence of optical spectroscopy by Blundell et al. (2008), and so we present the results of 3D numerical simulations of circumbinary orbits. These simulations show precession in the longitude of the ascending node of all inclined circumbinary orbits - an effect which would be manifested as the observed ruff reorientation. Matching the rate of ruff precession is possible if circumbinary components are sufficiently close to the binary system, but only if the binary mass fraction is close to equality and the binary eccentricity is non-zero

The article attempts to answer the question contained in the title: "Do pedagogues need realistic metaphysics?". In the first part of the text the author explains the difference between the colloquial and philosophical meanings of the term "metaphysics". The author describes realistic metaphysics in accordance with how it is understood by the Philosophical School of Lublin. The metaphysical understanding of reality that is described by this school is based on the theory of the analogy of being. The main part of the article is dedicated to this theory. The transcendental features of the intelligibility and desirability of being are discovered, thanks to the existence of the analogy in every being, including human beings. These features are the deepest foundation of the intelligibility and acceptance of the human being, on which pedagogy is based

On the binary nature of the γ-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 (= MWC 656) and HESS J0632+057 (= MWC 148)

We present optical spectroscopy of MWC 656 and MWC 148, the proposed optical counterparts of the gamma-ray sources AGL J2241+4454 and HESS J0632+0 57, respectively. The main parameters of the Halpha emission line (EW, FWHM and centroid velocity) in these stars are modulated on the proposed orbital periods of 60.37 and 321 days, respectively. These modulations are likely produced by the resonant interaction of the Be discs with compact stars in eccentric orbits. We also present radial velocity curves of the optical stars folded on the above periods and obtain the first orbital elements of the two gamma-ray sources thus confirming their binary nature. Our orbital solution support eccentricities e~0.4 and 0.83+-0.08 for MWC 656 and MWC 148, respectively. Further, our orbital elements imply that the X-ray outbursts in HESS J0632+057/MWC 148 are delayed ~0.3 orbital phases after periastron passage, similarly to the case of LS I +61 303. In addition, the optical photometric light curve maxima in AGL J2241+4454/MWC 656 occur ~0.25 phases passed periastron, similar to what is seen in LS I +61 303. We also find that the orbital eccentricity is correlated with orbital period for the known gamma-ray binaries. This is explained by the fact that small stellar separations are required for the efficient triggering of VHE radiation. Another correlation between the EW of Halpha and orbital period is also observed, similarly to the case of Be/X-ray binaries. These correlations are useful to provide estimates of the key orbital parameters Porb and e from the Halpha line in future Be gamma-ray binary candidates

SHPA acknowledges financial support from CNPq, CAPES and Fapemig. AAV acknowledges support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) via the allocation of an Ambizione Followship. Date of Acceptance: 06/08/2015We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTSs) V819 Tau and V830 Tau within the MaTYSSE (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-ingiant Exoplanets) programme, involving the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. At ≃3 Myr, both stars dissipated their discs recently and are interesting objects for probing star and planet formation. Profile distortions and Zeeman signatures are detected in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines, whose rotational modulation we modelled using tomographic imaging, yielding brightness and magnetic maps for both stars. We find that the large-scale magnetic fields of V819 Tau and V830 Tau are mostly poloidal and can be approximated at large radii by 350-400 G dipoles tilted at≃30° to the rotation axis. They are significantly weaker than the field of GQ Lup, an accreting classical T Tauri star (cTTS) with similar mass and age which can be used to compare the magnetic properties of wTTSs and cTTSs. The reconstructed brightness maps of both stars include cool spots and warm plages. Surface differential rotation is small, typically ≃4.4 times smaller than on the Sun, in agreement with previous results on wTTSs. Using our Doppler images to model the activity jitter and filter it out from the radial velocity(RV) curves, we obtain RV residuals with dispersions of 0.033 and 0.104km s-1 for V819 Tau and V830 Tau, respectively. RV residuals suggest that a hot Jupiter may be orbiting V830 Tau, though additional data are needed to confirm this preliminary result. We find no evidence for close-in giant planet around V819 Tau.Peer reviewe

Reconstruction of Neutral-Triggered Recoil Jets in sqrt(s) = 200 GeV p+p Collisions at the STAR Experiment

    No full text
The collision of relativistic heavy-ion such as the AuAu-collisions studied at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider produce a hot, dense medium with properties consistent with that of a state of matter in which quarks and gluons become deconfined, the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Collimated sprays of hadrons known as jets are produced by the fragmentation of quarks and gluons during the early stages of a heavy-ion collision, and offer a valuable probe of this medium. In particular, jets recoiling from energetic direct photons offer a "golden channel" through which we may study the complex dynamics of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. However, to understand the interplay between jets and the produced medium, a high-precision reference is needed in which no medium is produced. Thus, this thesis presents a high precision measurement of the semi-inclusive yields of charged jets recoiling from energetic dir and triggers in s = 200 GeV pp-collisions recorded by the STAR detector during the 2009 running year. The recoil jets were reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-kT algorithm with jet resolution parameters 0.2 and 0.5. A regularized unfolding scheme was employed to correct the measured per-trigger recoil jet yields for finite reconstruction efficiency and resolution. The energy resolution of the triggers was assessed using a simulation of the STAR electromagnetic calorimeter. The effect of a finite trigger resolution was applied to recoil jet spectra generated by PYTHIA 8.185 using a weighting scheme, and the corrected data were compared against the weighted recoil jet spectra from PYTHIA 8.185

The process of property transformation in the agriculture began in 1991 and was connected with Agricultural Property Agency. The Agricultural Property Agency in Olsztyn has 933,7 thousands of hectare. Till 2007 the Agency sold 42,2% of total area, lease 30,4%, gratuitous delivery 6,1% mainly for local communes, state forest and others. Still 6,1% of total area remain in the hands of Agricultural Property Agency. The economical results testifies that the remaining area is well managed. The efficiency of the biddings are high, the Agricultural Property Agency systematically reduces its operational costs, the properties are financed mainly by own resources, the investments activities are highly restricted, the vindication is efficient and the financial flow is well secured. Besides the significant financial resources are transferred to the State budget. Effectiveness of Agricultural Property Agency in Olsztyn will be hardly influence by general trends in State politics in the area of improvement of Polish agriculture
