    FOOD AS A CONCEPT OF CULTURE AND INDIAN CODE IN JHUMPA LAHIRI`S WRITING

    The purpose of the article is to analyze the culinary concept with Indian gastronomy code analysis in the context of the transcultural paradigm in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writing (an American writer of Bengali origin). In the article we used the following methods: cultural and historical (defining the role and place of Lahiri`s writing in US literature of the twentieth century), historical and typological (determining the specifics of themes, motifs, images, story features of the writer`s works), functional (clarifying the features of Lahiri`s poetics), hermeneutic (interpretation of various aspects of the literary text), narratological analysis (specifics` analysis of Lahiri`s narrative manner), biographical (revealing the reflection of author`s personal experience in her writing), the principles of postcolonial and decolonial criticism (rethinking the problem of “otherness” in transculture discourse). The author of the article notes that food serves as conditional language for characters and as cultural code that interprets by “ours” only – Indian culture representatives. It is indicated that in the context of transcultural understanding, food and the process of its preparation are of particular importance: usual home-cooked dishes are synonymous of protection, security, peace, belonging to one’s home; instead, the presence of “other” exotic dishes makes it possible to get acquainted with the culinary preferences of another culture, as well as to trace the basic similarities and differences.Therefore, cultural culinary differences are found in the kitchen, where the characters are accustomed to spend most of the day and especially carefully prepare the dishes. An interpretation of cooking as a true art is associated with Jhumpa Lahiri`s marginalized / border characters: you need to remember how much, when, and what kind of spices add to the dishes. As a true Bengali women, the characters skillfully prepare “their” traditional dishes. As a result of cooking of two dozen dishes, the smell of mutton curry and pulao (a traditional Indian vegetable pilaf) is especially heard in the rooms. There is a “cultural mix” in the kitchen: Indian dishes are prepared with the help of American household appliances. The “food” concept embodies a cultural phenomenon and allows understanding the features of national Indian cuisine; it is a cultural code that gives meaningful information. The semantic structure of lexical units that fill the “food” concept in Lahiri`s works, as well as cultural and value aspects of this concept are widely represented. It is important to distinguish between home-made daily food or holiday treats, and food as an element of Indian national culture. The writer describes in detail the traditional Indian dishes and the usual, hastily prepared, daily American ones. The reader gets a complete picture of the traditional festive dishes of Indian cuisine. Thus, the structure of the “food” concept can be represented as follows: the names of traditional everyday food (Americans and Bengalis) and traditional American and Bengali holiday dishes. Food is directly connected with gender issues. Eating habits and the way of cooking determine a woman`s identity as well as her difference. Food emphasizes woman`s cultural affiliation: in Lahiri`s writing it is shown that food serves as sacred ritual and art for Indians, in contrast to the American habit of hunger satisfying with semi-finished products. It is noticeable that within Lahiri`s texts the verb “to eat” has a lot of synonyms: to consume, to guzzle, to have, to lunch, to be full of something, to throw down, etc. Using such a variety of lexical and semantic series of one verb, the author reveals the characters` attitude towards traditional Indian cuisine. But what important is not what synonymous series of the word “food” the author uses, but that it conveys Indian culinary customs and traditions. The process began with an implicit act of self-translation from English, undertaken during her apprenticeship in Italian, and culminated in the emergence of an autonomous Italian literary voice. The originality and literary quality of her Italian works are such that Lahiri may now be fully acknowledged not only as a prominent Anglo-American author, but also as a significant figure within contemporary Italian literature, in a state of productive and harmonious bilingual coexistence

    Jhumpa Lahiri has achieved success and prestige by writing novels and short stories about the Indian-American experience in the United States. In 2015 the author debuted as an Italian language writer with In altre parole, a series of reflections on her process of Italian language learning. Since then she has published Il vestito dei libri, a small volume exploring the topic of book covers, and a novel, Dove mi trovo. This paper proposes to draw some considerations on the relationship that Jhumpa Lahiri, a displaced writer and translated woman, established with English and Italian languages in the light of texts that thematize issues about transit and diaspora in the contemporary world.Jhumpa Lahiri, que obteve sucesso e prestígio escrevendo romances e contos sobre a experiência de indianos e seus descendentes nos Estados Unidos, fez sua primeira experiência de escritora em língua italiana com In altre parole, no ano de 2015. La decisión de utilizar el italiano y no el inglés, se percibe como una transformación que la autora explica recurriendo a una técnica propia de la escritura femenina: el relato autobiográfico. La lengua aparece entonces como un factor clave en la formación de identidades personales y colectivas. Nuestra propuesta examina el uso que Lahiri hace del italiano como motor del cambio. Por otra parte, la autora alcanza tal empatía con el lector que la historia se convierte en un claro ejemplo de escritura femenina.In her latest work, the American writer Jhumpa Lahiri, suggests the problem of dual social and linguistic identity. The decision to use Italian language instead of English is perceived as a personal transformation that the author justifies by making use of the essential technical of female literature: the autobiography. The language appears as a key factor in both formations of public and private identities. Our proposal analyzes the use that Lahiri makes about Italian language as a starting point of her metamorphosis. Moreover, the author reaches such an empathy with the reader, that the story is turned into an evident example of women´s writing

Labium, but for the black palpi, bases of mandibles and lateral edges of clypeus yellow. Prothorax blackish with lower lateral edges yellow. Hind margin of posterior lobe prothorax shallowly tripartite. Synthorax dull metallic green on dorsum, still more so on sides below humeral suture. A yellow stripe narrowed above, running below the 1st lateral suture and above the spiracle, beyond which point it is broadened. Metepimeron and beneath synthorax, also yellow. Legs black. Wings entirely enfumed with brown. Discoidal cells narrow, with costal margin a little less than hind margin. Pterostigma dark brown, braced, covering 3-4 cells, 2.5 mm in length. Postnodal cross veins 24 in fore wing, 22-24 in hind wing, Ab arising a little proximal to Ac in cither wing. 5 post-quadrangular antenodal cells in fore wing, 4 in hind wing. Abdomen dark bronze brown, almost black on segments 7- 9, segment 10 glossy black. Sides of segment 1 and lower half of sides of segment 2 except a narrow apical annule yellow. Anal appendages glossy black. Superiors subequal to segment 10 of abdomen, forcipate, cylindrical and well separated at base, narrowing thereafter to a point less than half the length of the organ from base, then again dilated and flattened, obtusely rounded at apex; a basal expansion on inner border, with its outer margin broadly oval as seen from dorsum, subquadrate and shallowly notched, as seen from side. Inferiors a little less than half the length of Superiors, its tip just overlaying the basal expansion of the superiors, broad at base, curving upwards and rapidly narrowing to an acute apex; closely apposed and overlapping at apex as seen from dorsum; a robust spine, arising from nearer base than the tip of the organ, directed straight upwards as seen from sides; shorter and less acutely pointed than the remaining distal portion of the appendage and giving the same a bifurcate appearance. Penis shaft without hairs, external and internal folds well developed, the latter with a short spine springing up from the outer angle on either side. This species comes close to Megalestes irma Fraser 1920, on account of large size and general shape of the anal appendages, but differs from same in the following: relatively smaller; beneath synthorax yellow (vs black, pruinosed); wings enfumed (vs hyaline); 22-24 ( v s 17-18) postnodal cross veins in hind wing; details in the shape of the anal appendages, specially that of the basal expansion of the Superiors.     Jhumpa Lahiri ha vinto il Pulitzer Prize for Fiction nel 2000 per il suo primo libro, la raccolta di racconti Interpreter of Maladies (1999), e da allora è considerata un’importante scrittrice americana contemporanea. Nel 2011 ha deciso di trasferirsi a Roma con la famiglia, dove ha scritto In altre parole (2015), un libro che racconta la sua esperienza con la lingua italiana. Da allora ha deciso di scrivere solo in italiano e finora ha pubblicato un romanzo, racconti, poesie e un saggio in questa lingua. Il presente contributo ripercorre il percorso dell’autrice, che negli ultimi anni è tornata alla sua prima lingua letteraria come traduttrice e autotraduttrice dall’italiano all’inglese. Nell’analisi, mi concentro sul legame tra il multilinguismo di Lahiri e il suo lavoro di traduttrice: è, infatti, solo scrivendo in italiano che Lahiri diventa, prima, traduttrice e, infine, autotraduttrice. Il presente studio si concentrerà in particolare sulle riflessioni poetologiche dell’autrice come (auto)traduttrice e sulla ricezione della sua opera.Jhumpa Lahiri won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000 for her first book, the short story collection Interpreter of Maladies (1999), and has since been considered an important contemporary American writer. In 2011, she decided to move to Rome with her family, where she wrote In altre parole (2015), a book about her experience with the Italian language, in Italian. She decided to write only in Italian from then on and so far has published a novel, stories, poems and essays in that language. This article traces the path of this multilingual author, who in recent years has also returned to her first literary language as a translator and self-translator from Italian into English. In my analysis, I focus on the connection between Lahiri’s multilingualism and her work as a translator, because it was only through writing in Italian that Lahiri became a translator and finally a self-translator. In these considerations, I include the poetological reflections of the author as a (self-)translator as well as her reception.Jhumpa Lahiri erhielt im Jahr 2000 den Pulitzer Prize for Fiction für ihr erstes Buch, den Kurzgeschichtenband Interpreter of Maladies (1999), und gilt seither als eine der wichtigsten amerikanischen GegenwartsautorInnen. 2011 beschloss sie, mit ihrer Familie nach Rom zu ziehen, wo sie In altre parole (2015), ein Buch über ihre Erfahrung mit der italienischen Sprache, auf Italienisch schrieb. Sie beschloss, fortan nur mehr auf Italienisch zu schreiben und hat bislang einen Roman, Erzählungen, Gedichte sowie Essays in dieser Sprache veröffentlicht. Der Beitrag zeichnet den Weg dieser mehrsprachigen Autorin nach, die in den letzten Jahren zudem als Übersetzerin und Selbstübersetzerin vom Italienischen ins Englische wieder zu ihrer ersten Literatursprache zurückgekehrt ist. In meiner Analyse konzentriere ich mich auf den Zusammenhang zwischen Lahiris Mehrsprachigkeit und ihrer Übersetzertätigkeit, denn erst durch das Schreiben auf Italienisch wurde Lahiri zur Übersetzerin und schließlich zur Selbstübersetzerin. In diese Überlegungen beziehe ich die poetologischen Reflexionen der Autorin als (Selbst-)Übersetzerin sowie ihre Rezeption mit ein
