Location-privacy-preserving technique for 5g mmwave devices

    No full text
In fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, a single base station equipped with multiple antennas can determine the user position within centimeters, by processing the wireless millimeter-wave channel estimate. A fake base station serving a victim user can also obtain the user location. In order to protect the user privacy, we propose a technique to prevent localization. We design a user transmit beamformer, so that the angles of departure of each channel path are hidden to the base station, thus preventing localization. We also optimize the allocated power, in order to maximize the achievable rate. The proposed solution is compared with both the capacity-achieving beamforming (without location privacy) and the zero-forcing beamforming, which still provides location privacy, at the cost of a lower rate

Influence of an interpositional spacer on the behaviour of the tibiofemoral joint: a finite element study

    No full text
Background: interpositional arthroplasty is considered by many surgeons for the treatment of isolated medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee. In this procedure, an interpositional spacer is inserted into the medial compartment of the joint with no bone resection and no mechanical fixation. Major problems such as implant dislocation, severe pain or need for revision have been reported post-operatively.Methods: in this study, the kinematics of a knee implanted with an interpositional spacer made of either polyurethane or cobalt–chrome during walking, stair ascent and squatting cycles have been predicted and compared to the normal knee using finite element analysis. In addition, articular cartilage stress histories have been examined to obtain distributions of cumulative stress, a measure of the likelihood of articular cartilage degeneration.Findings: the insertion of a polyurethane interpositional spacer in the medial side of the knee did not affect knee kinematics as compared to the normal knee, but caused an increase of articular cartilage cumulative contact stress exposures in the medial compartment of the joint. The knee implanted with the Co–Cr spacer exhibited similar trends in knee kinematics, however significantly different ranges of motion were observed during some periods of the activity cycles, specifically during the first half of the walking cycle where lower ranges of motion were predicted. In addition, higher articular cartilage cumulative contact stress exposures were observed in both compartments of the knee. In both cases, cumulative contact stress exposures of the tibial articular cartilage were more affected than those of the femoral articular cartilage.Interpretation: these results suggest implant material as an important parameter in the design phase of interpositional spacer

Effects of ligament pretension on the biomechanics of the knee: a finite element analysis

    No full text
A large number of finite element models have been developed to study the behaviour of the knee joint under different loading conditions. They have been used to study knee ligament function, knee prosthesis design and ligament reconstruction procedures. The terms pretension or prestrain of a knee ligament refer to the strain in the ligament when the joint is at full extension and little is known about its influence on the kinematics of the joint. In knee models, the ligament reference strains are usually merely estimated [1] and sometimes adapted by means of trial and error in order to get better agreement with experimental data [2]. As a consequence, very different values can be found in the literature. The purpose of this study was to analyze how ligament prestrains can affect the kinematics of the knee predicted with a FE model

Mixed Subdivisions Suitable for the Greedy Canny–Emiris Formula

    No full text
The Canny–Emiris formula (Canny and Emiris in International symposium on applied algebra, algebraic algorithms, and error-correcting codes, 1993) gives the sparse resultant as the ratio of the determinant of a Sylvester-type matrix over a minor of it, both obtained via a mixed subdivision algorithm. In Checa and Emiris (Proceedings of the 2022 international symposium on symbolic and algebraic computation, 2022), the same authors gave an explicit class of mixed subdivisions for the greedy approach so that the formula holds, and the dimension of the constructed matrices is smaller than that of the subdivision algorithm, following the approach of Canny and Pedersen (An algorithm for the Newton resultant, 1993). Our method improves upon the dimensions of the matrices when the Newton polytopes are zonotopes and the systems are multihomogeneous. In this text, we provide more such cases, and we conjecture which might be the liftings providing minimal size of the resultant matrices. We also describe two applications of this formula, namely in computer vision and in the implicitization of surfaces, while offering the corresponding JULIA code. We finally introduce a novel tropical approach that leads to an alternative proof of a result in Checa and Emiris (Proceedings of the 2022 international symposium on symbolic and algebraic computation, 2022). © The Author(s) 2024
