The surface geometry of exotic nuclei

    No full text
We analyze the surface geometry of the spherical even-even Ca, Ni, Sn and Pb nuclei using two approaches: The relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov one with several parameter sets and the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov one with the Gogny force. The proton and neutron density distributions are fitted to two-parameter Fermi density distributions to obtain the half-density radii and diffuseness parameters. Those parameters allow us to determine the nature of the neutron skins predicted by the models. The calculations are compared with existing experimental data.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Inst Tecnol Aeronaut, BR-12228901 Sao Jose Dos Campos, BrazilOpen Univ, Dept Phys, Milton Keynes, Bucks, EnglandUniv Estadual Paulista, Depto Fis, Itapeva, SP, BrazilCtr Detudes Bruyeres Le Chatel, Bruyeres Le Chatel, FranceUniv Sao Paulo, Inst Fis, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Depto Fis, Itapeva, SP, Brazi

Midface rejuvenation surgery combining preperiosteal midcheek lift, lower blepharoplasty with orbital fat preservation and autologous fat grafting

Objective The aim of this study was to describe a technique for midface rejuvenation combining lower blepharoplasty, midcheek lift and autologous fat transfer. Methods All patients who underwent a midface rejuvenation procedure performed by the same surgeon and using a classic subciliary blepharoplasty surgical approach were identified. The technique combined three distinct procedures: lower blepharoplasty with use of a transposition flap of orbital adipose tissue in the medial and central compartment to reduce the subpalpebral bags and attenuate the palpebrojugual sulcus; midcheek lift in the preperiosteal plane with trans-osseous fixation exerting traction on the soft tissues of the cheek along several vectors; autologous fat transfer to offset the loss of volume in the target area. Results Between January 2011 and December 2015, 14 patients were operated with the described technique. Long-term results were good and stable over time. Two complications in the form of ectropion were observed in the series but resolved with daily massages. Conclusions The combination of lower blepharoplasty, midcheek lift and autologous fat transfer appear to enable treatment of midface ageing. The results were satisfactory and durable, and the procedure was well tolerated. The procedures could be combined with others for the treatment of the upper and lower face during the same surgical procedure

Short report: Diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever by the quantitative buffy coat fluorescence method

    No full text
The quantitative buffy coat (QBC) parasite detection method is a sensitive and specific tool for the diagnosis of malaria parasites. It is also useful for the diagnoses of other hemoparasites, including Trypanosoma, Babesia, and Leptospira. We report a case of relapsing fever diagnosed by this technique in a short-term traveler from Senegal. The diagnosis was confirmed by the standard Giemsa hemoscopy and by the identification of significant titers of antibodies to Borrelia spp. of tick-borne relapsing fevers by specific immunofluorescence and Western blot tests. The QBC technique seems to be useful in the diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever in blood samples and should be included in the management of fever in the traveler returning from tropical regions

Hot forming of composite prepreg: Numerical analyses

    No full text
International audienceThe work presented here is part of the ``FORBANS'' project about the Hot Drape Forming (HDF) process consisting of unidirectional prepregs laminates. To ensure a fine comprehension of this process a combination strategy between experiment and numerical analysis is adopted. This paper is focused on the numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) with a hyperelastic constitutive law. Each prepreg layer is modelled by shell elements. These elements consider the tension, in-plane shear and bending behaviour of the ply at different temperatures. The contact/friction during the forming process is taken into account using forward increment Lagrange multipliers

Broadband Vibrational Cooling of Cold Cesium Molecules: Theory and Experiments RID E-9057-2011

    No full text
The use of a broadband, frequency shaped femtosecond laser on translationally cold cesium molecules has recently demonstrated to be a very efficient method of cooling also the vibrational degree of freedom. A sample of cold molecules, initially distributed over several vibrational levels, has thus been transfered into a single selected vibrational level of the singlet. X(1)Sigma(g) ground electronic state. Our method is based on repeated optical pumping by laser light with a spectrum broad enough to excite all populated vibrational levels but limited in its frequency bandwidth with a spatial light modulator. In such a way we are able to eliminate transitions from the selected level, in which molecules accumulate. In this paper we briefly report the main experimental results and then address, in a detailed way by computer simulations, the perspectives for a "complete" cooling of the molecules, including also the rotational degree of freedom. Since the pumping process strongly depends on the relative shape of the ground and excited potential curves, ro-vibrational cooling through different excited states is theoretically compared
