Planning in the information age: Be it resolved
Manuel Castells, author of a recent trilogy on the subject of the "information age", distills four particular challenges for planning: environmental sustainability; the infrastructure to manage mega-urbanization; the reconstruction of cultural meaning - of a sense of place - in the the spatial forms and processes that are the bread and butter of planners; and the preparation of regional governmental institutions for larger roles as mediators of the local and the global.https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/6312/Castells.pdf?sequence=3This article is based on Professor Castells'
previous article, "The Education of City Planners
in the Information Age," originally published in
the Berkeley Planning Journal, volume 12 (1998) ,
pp. 25-31. It has been adapted and reproduced by
permission. Manuel Castells has published and
taught extensively on issues related to
urbanization, social movements, the economy, and
the rise of information technology. His most recent
major work, The Information Age: Economy,
Society and Culture (published by Blackwell) is a
three-volume set analyzing the transformation of
society in the information age (Vol. 1: The Rise of
the Network Society, 1996; Vol. 2: The Power of
Identity, 1997; Vol. 3: End of Millennium, 1998)
Mind framing: Analysis of a central key of Manuel Castells´s vision of power
In this paper, we analize in systematic and detailed terms one central aspect of Manuel Castells´s contemporary sociological perspective of power: the question of frame or modeling mind. The research will allow us to discover, mainly, the proliferation of a discourse built from two theoretical operations hidden by the author: the postulation of a logic of imposition as exclusionary logic of power or power of framed, and the separation between power and minds. We demonstrate that such discourse embodies a contradictory movement as often assumed a markedly ideological form that tend to mask the mentioned operations. Castells´s appropriation of Entman´s theory, his mainly theoretical source inthis case, provides significant evidence to demonstrate such findings.

Az üzenet maga a médium - Interjú Manuel Castells-szal
Terhi Rantanen, a Londoni Gazdaságtudományi és Politológiai Intézet (London School of Economics and Political Science, LSE) munkatársa és a Global Media and Communication című új szakfolyóirat alapító szerkesztője 2005 februárjában készített interjút Manuel Castells-szal a Katalóniai Nyílt Egyetemen, Barcelonában. A kommunikáció – társadalmunk jellegéből fakadóan – a társadalomtudományok összességének a központi kutatási területévé vált.
Manuel Castells and Informationalism
Understanding how the social appropriation of information and communication technologies came to define the contemporary period is critical for researchers and practitioners of innovation, business and management. This paper explores how the work of Manuel Castells as a social theorist provides the intellectual tools and the encompassing lenses to enable the study and navigate the process of structural transformation in which our lives have been engulfed from the 1970s onwards. Castells’ procedure of considering technology, social usages and structural history leads him to a key conceptual result: the introduction of the “Network Society” concept. His ideas have most notably been applied to the field of communications studies, which he analyses through the prism of power. However, these insights are not containable in one single discipline as the implications of informationalism stretch in a variety of directions, making other dimensions of society amenable to the network perspective. Organisational studies are one topic in which this line of enquiry may fruitfully be pursued.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Revisiting Castells' Take on the City and the Informational Age
This paper reappraises the two papers of Manuel Castells published in this journal in 1993 and 2002. This appraisal considers the context of his academic career and formidable body of work, the historical period in which the papers appeared and the general discussion on the transformation of cities and societies in academia. Although his legacy is now strongly coloured by Castells' later shift to information and communication, his contributions to cities should not be neglected. Commonalities and differences between the two papers at issue here are summarised. Despite shifts in personal positions of the author and socio-economic positions of the studied cities, commonalities largely prevail. Their footprint in the academic literature is indicated by a discussion of cities and the world economy

Castells versus Bell: A comparison of two grand theorists of the information age
Daniel Bell (1919–2011) and Manuel Castells (1942–) are the grand theorists of the information age. The article provides a detailed, up-to-date, comparative analysis of their writings. It begins with their methodologies, identifying numerous commonalities in their post-Marxian frameworks. The substance of their theories is then examined, where it is shown that both plausibly explain contemporary social reality in terms of the interplay of three forces: the information technology revolution, the restructuring of capitalism and the innovational role of culture. There are found to be major similarities in their accounts (the Kantian interpretation, social stratification) but also significant divergences (role of science, the fourth world, the normative content of culture). Suitably combined, Bell’s and Castells’s thought goes a long way towards delivering a persuasive sociological theory of the global information society. However, the article concludes by suggesting that extensive further work is needed to clarify the precise relationships between the three factors and their relative weightings in the equations required to explain recent social change
