“Digital” generation in the educational system of the Russian region: problems and solutions

    No full text
The purpose of the research is to analyze pedagogical problems stemming from the emergence of a new “digital” generation in Russian educational organizations of various levels (secondary schools, universities), and search for possible solutions to these problems primarily aimed at reducing the negative impact of digital devices in students’ activities.Materials and research methods are based on a number of foreign publications in the field of pedagogy, psychology, neurophysiology, conducted in the USA, Great Britain, Singapore and other countries since the 2000s, as well as studies of the “digital” generation of Russia in the mid-2010s. This research applied a specially developed technique that enabled conducting a relative assessment of the impact of digital devices on the activities of various students’ groups of an educational system (secondary schools - university) in one of the major Russian regions. Results of the study conducted in 2018 in one university and several schools of various types in a region of the Russian Federation reveals that the ninth grade lyceum students show a noticeably lower degree of the effect of digital devices on their daily activities compared to the first-year students of the same university. A similar indicator of a ninth-grade students’ group of a comprehensive secondary school, on the contrary, is significantly higher when compared to that of the first-year university students. The author substantiates two main reasons that lead to this result: 1) a more optimal workload of learning and cognitive activity of lyceum students, which, as a result, significantly reduces their free time, that could be spent on entertainment/ communication; 2) better control from the parents of lyceum students.Conclusion. The article describes two pedagogical models that allow, according to the author, to reduce the negative impact of digital devices on the younger generation. The first model (demonstrated at the Singapore Institute of Education), aimed at encouraging students to use gadgets for educational purposes, suggests a number of pedagogical conditions, both artificial (organizational and technological) and natural (age restrictions). The second model, on the one hand, does not impose strict age restrictions, but, at the same time, requires an educational organization to implement the training system that would effectively motivate students to learning and cognitive activity (with or without gadgets) on school days

The Digital Generation in Russian Education: from the Urgency of the Problem to Assessing the Impact of Digitalization on Students

    No full text
The objectives of this research are: 1) an analysis of possible pedagogical strategies in relation to two age categories of Russian students (primary schoolchildren; older teenagers and youth) related to the new digital generation; 2) testing an experimental methodology for assessing the degree of influence of digitalization on the activities of older adolescents and youth on a relatively wide range of educational institutions (regular school, two different lyceums, institute) and for a relatively long period (two academic years).Materials and research methods are based on a number of foreign works in the field of pedagogy, psychology, neurophysiology, conducted in the USA, Great Britain, Singapore and a number of other countries, starting from the 2000s, as well as studies from the mid-2010s on the digital generation of Russia. The authors used the methodology for assessing the degree of influence of digitalization on students’ activities, previously published in the journal “Open Education” (No. 1/2019).Results of a study conducted during 2018 and 2019 in several schools of various types and a higher educational institution of one of the largest Russian regions allowed us to make an assumption about the noticeable significance of one of the two key indicators of the author’s methodology – “Significant Impact of Digitalization in the Activities of Students”. According to the author, it may indicate a lower or higher motivation of students in relation to educational and cognitive activities, including those resulting from the positive or negative impact of digitalization.Conclusion. The article describes two pedagogical strategies in relation to different age categories of students, aimed at increasing the motivation for using digital devices for educational and cognitive purposes. The first strategy is aimed at primary schoolchildren and was clearly demonstrated in the early 2000s at the Singapore Institute of Education. The second strategy, aimed at older adolescents and young people, requires the presence of certain social conditions and the consideration of a number of individual factors (average daily time of using digital devices; share of time using digital devices for educational and cognitive purposes; high-quality control of students’ parents or high self-control of students). Testing of the indicated experimental technique allowed the author to identify the boundary numerical values of these factors. At the same time, it is noted that the achievement of a slight negative impact of digital devices on the educational and cognitive activities of students does not require the complete fulfillment of absolutely all three of these factors

Horizontal Management at Russian University: Current Trend or Urgent Need?

    No full text
The article addresses an actual problem of using horizontal methods in university management in Russia. Two organizational processes are analyzed, which are relatively new for Russian universities, which came, in many respects, from the Western education system: postgraduate training (Master’s programs) and training of foreign citizens in the preparatory departments (programs in Russian). These two processes, in the opinion of the author, over the past few years could become a platform for approbation of new modern approaches to management in Russian universities and institutes. The sample study included three federal universities located in one of the regions of Russia (classical university, university for humanities and pedagogy, and institute of culture and arts). It is shown that large educational organizations, as a rule, try to integrate new processes in the traditional (vertical) management structure. The basic prerequisites for implementing horizontal ma- nagement in the institutes of culture, were mainly economic, not organizational or innovative. At the same time, the practical experience of using mixed (horizontal-vertical) management structures in the Chelyabinsk State Institute of Culture and Arts showed positive results both in terms of economic and educational-organizational indicators

Structural and Surface Modification of Carbon Nano-Onions and Studies Their Physicochemical Properties

    No full text
The main assumption of the doctoral dissertation was structural and surface modification of carbon nano-onions in order to obtain their specific physicochemical properties, including electrochemical and catalytic ones. The modifications were performed in two ways: using physical factors (temperature and the composition of gas atmosphere), and/or using various chemical modifiers (chemical reagents). In the experimental section, the synthesis of doped CNOs and comprehensive physicochemical characteristics of the modified CNOs are described. The use of these experimental methods made it possible to determine the relationship between the structure, chemical composition and physicochemical properties of the CNOs. Structural modification was performed via in situ synthesis, using varying experimental conditions and doping the carbon nanostructures with N or B atoms. Surface modification involved the modification of CNOs with N and/or S atoms via post-preparative synthesis. The introduction of heteroatoms of B, N and/or S via structural and surface modification to the spherical structure of CNOs changed their physicochemical properties, improved their ability to store electric charge, and improved their catalytic properties. The results of the experiments confirmed that modified carbon nanostructures can be used in electrochemical sensors and energy storage devices, e.g., capacitors.Badania zawarte w pracy doktorskiej powstały dzięki finansowaniu ze środków Narodowego Centrum Nauki (grant SONATA BIS: #2012/05/E/ST5/03800; kierownik: Marta E. Construction of Gender Identity in Political Discourse

    No full text
The article regards the phenomenon of political communication from the perspective of the particularities of constructing gender identity by politicians. As far as the influence of the gender factor on politicians' speech is concerned, the most relevant approach among many others is the discourse approach formed within the paradigm of cognitive linguistics, which considers political discourse as the object of study. The paper deals with the notion of political discourse and examines a hypothesis that gender factor might have a number of manifestations in political communication. It is noted that studying the specificity of constructing gender identity by politicians in discursive practices is becoming a highly topical issue as the importance of female participation in public and political life is growing. Political decision-making has long been considered the prerogativeofmen, but now the necessity of studying the female factor in this sphere is obvious. The author dwells upon the historical background of linguistic gender studies and summarizes the main stages of their development focusing mainly on the theory of the social construction of gender. The founders of this theory advance the thesis that an individual's gender identity is shaped in the process of constructing gender relations in communicative interaction. Further in the article we analyse a few devices of creating the images of masculinity and femininity by famous English and American politicians. As structural components of gender identity, masculinity and femininity turn out to be modifiable parameters depending on the pragmatic attitudes of communicators. Traditional androcentrism of political discourse may account for modifying the female speech style towards masculinity to achieve certain communicative aims

Peculiarities of Creating a Political Image in a Pre-Election Campaign: The Gender Aspect

    No full text
The article is concerned with the influence of the gender factor on creating the image of a political leader. The 2008 US vice-presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joseph Biden has been chosen as research material. The scientific value of the article consists in a thorough study of the peculiarities of the politicians’ use of linguistic means and their interpretation in terms of creating a positive image by males and females. The author considers the structure of an image and its components including a few communicative self-presentation microroles, which are thought to be traditional for American political discourse. Besides, the paper analyses the tactics used by the politicians in course of their speech and the images created focusing mainly on the logical and emotional components of the vice-presidential candidates’ addresses. The author arrives at the conclusion that the speech of both candidates corresponds to gender expectations regarding male and female speech behavior. In particular, the female candidate places a greater emphasis on the topic of family and her language is more emotionally expressive whereas the male candidate tends to highlight logic and accuracy and uses a more emotionally neutral speaking style
