Monte-Carlo simulations of a neutron source generated with electron linear accelerator

    No full text
Neutron generator consisting of an electron linear accelerator and a tungsten X-ray converter can produce a neutron flux of 109 n/s and 1011 n/s at electron energies of 10 and 15 MeV, respectively, with an electron beam intensity of 1014 e/s which means 160 and 240 W of electron incident beam power, respectively. Two stage neutron production with an electron to photon natural tungsten converter and a photon to neutron 9Be converter are equal or less efficient than one stage tungsten converter only. There is a low neutron separation energy of 9Be and a small cross section for the photonuclear reaction g(9Be,8Be*)n in comparison to photonuclear cross section in all tungsten isotopes for the photon energy range in and below resonance region. Results of the neutron generator modeling performed with the Fluka Monte-Carlo code are presented in this article

    The education in the Bible

    No full text
The Bible is in a sense the pedagogical book, which includes God and human guidelines for the education of man and nation and shows the realization of the educational process in the history of specific people and nations. The article presents the nature, scope and objectives of education in the Bible, then the educational subjects, environments and institutions, and finally the principles of education: endowment, trust and obedience, reward and punishment, attendance, trial, continuous process. The author uses the data contained in the Sacred Scripture, completing them with information from Judaic sources. The biblical model of education proves to be integral and effective, forms the mature people and communities, and leads them to participate in the life of God, the supreme Educators in the person of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit

Show Me Your Body and I’ll Tell You Who You Are: InterPREtation of Three Paintings by John Millais and Gabriel Rossetti

    No full text
The aim of this study is to represent the complexity of the human body analysing works of Pre-Raphaelite painters. The author starts with delineation of the beauty canon which has been ruling throughout the centuries and exemplifies how feminist movements moulded societal attitudes towards corporality, to finally focusing the reader’s attention towards three canvas painted by Millais and Rossetti Christ in the House of His Parents, Lady Lilith, and Venus Verticordia. Although realism plays the role of linking all the aforementioned paintings, there exist two extreme models among them. The first concerns the work of Millais, which represents the humiliated, obnoxious and execrable body. The controversy is intensified by the fact that the artist depicts the bodies of the Saint’s Family members, who until this time were identified with purity, good and beauty. The second model appears in the works of Rossetti, who creates a portrayal of the seductive, attractive and self-aware woman. What becomes noticeable is a dependency between objectivness and subjectivity, which merges to have an influence on the coherent creation of the female figure. Disparate perception of Millais’ and Rossetti’s works allows for a comparative analysis and the investigation of whether corporality is able to reflect the human mental condition

Sacred Scripture as a Means of Dialogue with God

    No full text
Sacred Scripture is the basis of Christianity and the code of the whole culture; therefore this knowledge is essential for every Christian and human. However, continuous returning to the same texts seems pointless. The author of the article shows that such a belief is wrong because the word, and therefore also the Bible, has not only informative function but also expressive and directive one. Truths contained in Sacred Scripture can be mastered, even though the large volume of books of the Bible and the gap of time and culture that divides us from them makes this a difficult task. By contrast, self-expression and appeal led by God to man require a constant response from the man. Sacred Scripture is the means of dialogue between God and man and therefore it must be constantly read if this dialogue has to continue and lead to communion with God and to share in His nature. This reading cannot keep only the informative dimension but must include all the functions of the word, must be integral. An example of such a reading is lectio divina taken for centuries

John Paul II in the face of the reality of Auschwitz

    No full text
In the context of the canonization of John Paul II, the author reflects on his experience of the concentration camp at Auschwitz. It is a difficult experience, therefore it can more reveal the Pope as a man and a pastor, his way of thinking and perceiving reality. Through canonization this way is indicated to us as a pattern. John Paul came often to Auschwitz, where he saw the place of denial of God and man, but also a place of victory of man over contempt, hatred and death through faith in God, which generates love for Him and for man. The symbol of such a victory is St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, martyr of love that as Christ gave his life for the fellow prisoner Francis Gajowniczek. In this heroic deed – in the opinion of the Pope – Christ himself was present, so the camp at Auschwitz is not only hell on earth, but also the Golgotha of our times, the cemetery of the martyrs, the sanctuary of the patron of difficult century. Pope John Paul II arrived there to pray and make a reflection on the contemporary man’s condition, who in Christ the Redeemer can still conquer evil with good and to build the peace based on respect for the rights of person and nations

Digital exclusion of seniors as a barrier to leading a productive life in the fourth industrial revolution

    No full text
Purpose – Analysis of the reasons for cyber exclusion of the elderly and a statistical illustration of this phenomenon in Poland Research method – Literature review, analysis of current statistical data, synthesis. Results – The introduction of modern ICT-based solutions can significantly help older people to remain independent and maintain a high quality of life. This is facilitated by strategic initiatives funded by the European Union, encouraging public units to take action to increase digital competences in society. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – Highlighting the role of public governance units in creating an ecosystem of support for building access to ICTs and increasing digital competence. This article is the result of a project funded by the University of Economics in Katowice 2021–2023 BEYOND BARRIERS – The digital economy – a model departure to support the inclusion of cyber-excluded older people in the use of social services provided in a postpandemic world by ICT-enabled public management entities.Aldona Frączkiewicz-Wronka: [email protected] Zrałek: [email protected] Ostrowska: [email protected] Frączkiewicz-Wronka - University of Economics, KatowiceMaria Zrałek - Humanitas University, SosnowiecSabina Ostrowska - University of Economics, KatowiceAmpuja M., Koivisto J., 2014, From ‘Post-Industrial’ to ‘Network Society’ and Beyond: The Political Conjunctures and Current Crisis of Information Society Theory, “Economics triple C: Communication, Capitalism & Critique.
