    Fungal mats in solid-state fermentation

    No full text
Since over 2000 years man has cultivated fungi on grains, beans or other (by)products from agriculture or agro-industries, in order to produce tastier and healthier foods. Nowadays, cultivation on solid substrates (solid-state fermentation, SSF) is also used to produce industrial enzymes, drugs and biological plant protection agents. Wider application of SSF is hindered by a lack of knowledge about the design and control of the process. An important problem in SSF is the limited rate of oxygen supply to the fungal mats on the substrate surface. Using the fungus Aspergillus oryzae as an example, the author has discovered that aerial mycelia – which fungi can only form in SSF – help the fungus to overcome this oxygen supply limitation, and thus grow faster and make more enzymes of interest to the food industry. She has also identified other factors related to substrate pre-treatment that have a large impact on product formation. These findings offer opportunities for improved SSF processes

Interpretation of CPTu in Sensitive Fine-Grained Soils and Prediction of Residual Excess Pore Pressures in Consolidating Soils

Robertson (1986) soil classification on Sensitive Fine Grained Soils using CPTu is of interest since the variation of these soils include those of Consolidating Soils. However, the classification does not include into detail such as the influence of the existence of excess pore pressure prior to penetration testing or what is the contribution of the excess pore pressure to the total penetration resistance. Rahardjo et al (2008) studied this phenomena by extrapolation of the dissipation test data to determine the residual excess pore pressure which play an important role in CPTu testing. Further, Rahardjo et al (2016) continued investigation of the CPTu in Consolidating Soils using Bq, Bq* and Effective Stress Concept (Rahardjo et al. 2017). These findings have been very useful when using CPTu in very soft soils and ultrasoft soils where the undrained shear strength of the soils is very low. This paper is the results of several studies of CPTu testing in marine clays, lacustrine, ultrasoft soils or even peats. The author found that there is significant value of Bq and Bq*, hence are parameters of importance when dealing with soft soils and discussed in more detail. Recent applications are in very soft soils and peats in Sumatera and East Java mud eruption which are are also included

The integration of knowledge has become a central issue emerging among scholars in Indonesian Islamic universities. Some ideas have been proposed to make “bridge” between religious and secular knowledge, as we can see, for instance, in the thought of Kuntowijoyo on “prophetic social sciences”, M. Dawam Rahardjo on “decolonization of social sciences”, M. Amin Abdullah on “spider web of knowledge”, and Mulyadhi Kartanegara on “holistic reconstruction of knowledge”.The researches conducted so far have not touched the core problem in all these proposed ideas yet, namely the place of the Qur`an as a revelation in the integration of knowledge. In fact, the Qur`an constitutes a source of knowledge and, at the same time, an inspiring and guiding scripture, for Moslem’s beliefs, praactices, and thought. Therefore, neglecting the Qur`an in constructing Moslem’s thought on the integration of knowledge will make our understanding the issue artificial. The present article is aimed at studying the thought of Kuntowijoyo and M. Dawam Rahardjo by focusing the discussion on main points: firstly, on the place the Qur`an in the integration of knowledge (as inspiration, source of knowledge, or starting point in building theory) (and the present author will describe data as they are); secondly, intellectual and social background that play important role behind the ideasand modes of use of the Qur`an for intellectual enterprises (and the present author will go into deep analysis on factors or contexts in which the ideas formed); thirdly, the originality, strength, and weakness of the ideas (and the present author will examine the ideas in accordance with some standards)

Characteristic of Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Time Intensity Curve Analysis of Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI in Osteosarcoma Histopathologic Subtypes

    No full text
Abstract Background: According to WHO criteria, osteosarcoma (OS) consists of various histopathological subtypes. Thus, contrast-enhanced MRI is a very useful modality in the diagnosis and evaluation of osteosarcoma. Magnetic resonance imaging with dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE-MRI) studies was used to determine the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value and the slope of the time-intensity curve (TIC). This study aimed to determine the correlation between ADC and TIC analysis using %Slope and maximum enhancement (ME) of histopathological osteosarcoma subtypes. Methods: This was a retrospective study with observational analysis on OS patients. The obtained data were 43 samples. Moreover, the interpretation was conducted by placing three regions of interest (ROI) in determining ADC value. It was observed by two radiologist observers with more than 10 years of experience. In this case, as many as six obtained ROIs were averaged. The inter-observer agreement was evaluated by Kappa test. TIC curve was analyzed and slope value was obtained afterward. Through SPSS 21 software, the data was analyzed. Results: The mean of ADC values of OS was (1.031x10-3±0.31mm2/s), where the highest value was found in chondroblastic subtype (1.470 x10-3±0.31mm2/s). However, the mean of TIC %slope of OS was (45.3%/s), where the highest result was found in the osteoblastic subtype (70.8%/s) followed by small cell subtype (60.8%/s) and the mean of ME of OS was 100.55% with the highest values was in osteoblastic subtype 172.72% followed by chondroblastic subtype (144.92%). This study found a significant correlation between the mean of ADC value and the OS histopathologic results as well as the correlation between the mean of ADC value and ME. Conclusion: The various types of osteosarcoma have a characteristic of radiological appearances which may similar to some bone tumor entities. The analysis of ADC values and TIC curves using % slope and ME of osteosarcoma subtypes can improve the accuracy of diagnosis as well as the monitoring of the treatment response and the disease progression
