We conducted an experiment to compare the ratio of bone resorption to root length in the distal surface of the second molar (A), the proximal surface (B), and distal surface (C) in mesio-angular, incompletely impacted third molars in 27 young and 58 older adults with AP and 77 young and 79 older adults without a history of AP. Bone resorption in A, B, and C in older adults with AP demonstrated a significantly higher ratio when compared to those without AP, whereas there was no difference between those with and without AP in young adults except for B in women. However, there were no differences between bone resorption in B with AP in young and older women, and between bone resorption in C with AP in young and older adults. These indicate that AP and bone resorption are associated with incompletely impacted mandibular third molars in older adults. Keywords: bone resorption, pericoronitis, mandible, acute inflammation, elderl

Minoru Yamaoka, Yusuke Ono, Masahide Ishizuka, Yoko Hasumi-Nakayama, Ryosuke Doto, Kouichi Yasuda, Takashi Uematsu, Kiyofumi FurusawaOral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Matsumoto Dental University School of Dentistry, Shiojiri, Nagano, JapanAbstract: Acute inflammation is frequently seen in the elderly around incompletely impacted molars located apart from molars or premolars. To identify the factors causing acute inflammation in the solitary molars without second molars or without second and first molars, ages of patients and rates of acute inflammation in 75 horizontal incompletely impacted mandibular molars in contact or not in contact with molars in subjects 41 years old or older were studied using orthopantomographs. Acute inflammation was seen in nine third molars out of 48 third molars in contact with second molars (18.8%), whereas acute inflammation was seen in 11 molars out of 19 solitary molars without second molars or without first and second molars (57.9%) (p < 0.01). The mean age of 48 subjects with third molars in contact with the second molar was 50.42 ± 7.62 years, and the mean age of 19 subjects with isolated molars was 65.16 ± 10.41 years (p < 0.0001). These indicate that a solitary horizontal incompletely impacted molar leads more frequently to acute inflammation along with aging due to possible bone resorption resulting from teeth loss. Keywords: mandible, third molar, impaction, elderly, acute inflammation, solitary mola

Oscillation of tissue oxygen index in non-exercising muscle during exercise

    No full text
The purpose of the present study was to examine how oscillation of tissue oxygen index (TOI) in non-exercising exercise is affected during high-intensity and low-intensity exercises. Three exercises were performed with exercise intensities of 30% and 70% peak oxygen uptake ((V)over doto(2)peak) for 12 min and with exercise intensity of 70% (V)over doto(2)peak for 30 s. TOI in non-exercising muscle (biceps brachii) during the exercises for 12 min was determined by nearinfrared spectroscopy. TOI in the non-exercising muscle during the exercises was analyzed by fast Fourier transform (FFT) to obtain power spectra density (PSD). The frequency at which maximal PSD appeared (Fmax) during the exercise with 70% (V)over doto(2)peak for 12 min (0.00477 +/- 0.00172 Hz) was significantly lower than that during the exercise with 30% (V)over doto(2)peak for 12 min (0.00781 +/- 0.00338 Hz). There were significant differences in blood pH and blood lactate between the exercise with 70% V.o2peak and the exercise with 30% (V)over doto(2)peak. It is concluded that TOI in nonexercising muscle oscillates during low-intensity exercise as well as during high-intensity exercise and that the difference in Fmax between the two exercises is associated with the difference in increase in blood lactate derived from the exercise

NOTES ON VELIGERS OF JAPANESE OPISTHOBRANCHS (6)

The author has already made detailed descriptions of veligers of sixteen Japanese opisthobranchs in five papers (1960-1962) and here is presented a new paper of the same series on veligers of the following two more species : Stiliger (Stiliger) berghi BABA of Fam. Stiligeridae of Ord. Sacoglossa and Doto (Doto) japonica ODHNER of Fam. Dotonidae of Ord. Nudibranchia. The former is collected from the shore of Tannowa on the southeastern coast of Osaka Bay, while the latter is collected from the shore of Okawa situated about 8.5 km south to Tannowa and the shore of Ezura near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory

Interannual fluctuations in recruitment of walleye pollock in the Oyashio region related to environmental changes

The Japanese Pacific walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) stock is the largest stock of this species in Japanese waters. It is a key component of the Oyashio ecosystem. In southern Hokkaido waters, these fish spawn mainly during January and February near the mouth of Funka Bay (FB), and most eggs and larvae are transported into FB. During midsummer juvenile pollock migrate along the southern coast of Hokkaido to a nursery ground on the continental shelf off eastern Hokkaido (Doto area). However, some eggs and larvae are transported southward to the Tohoku region (TR). Transport depends largely on the Oyashio, which generally flows southward along the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and Tohoku. Thus, this stock has two different recruitment routes: FB–Doto and FB–TR. In the 1980s, when the southward flow of the Oyashio was strong, the number of age-2 pollock estimated from a virtual population analysis (VPA) indicated that recruitment to the entire stock remained at a medium level. In the 1990s, when the Oyashio weakened, strong year-classes occurred in 1991, 1994, and 1995, but not in the latter half of the 1990s. Juvenile catches in the TR by commercial fisheries, which can be taken as indices of recruitment level via FB-TR, were high during the 1980s and decreased in the 1990s. Although there was no significant difference in the average number of recruits between the 1980s and the 1990s as estimated from a VPA, the recruitment patterns differed between the two decades. Here, we propose that recruitment routes of this stock shifted in response to environmental changes

An extension of the Bianchi-Egnell stability estimate to Bakry, Gentil, and Ledoux's generalization of the Sobolev inequality to continuous dimensions and applications

    No full text
The main result of this dissertation is an extension of a stability estimate of the Sobolev Inequality established by Bianchi and Egnell in cite{BiEg}. Bianchi and Egnell's Stability Estimate answers the question raised by H. Brezis and E. H. Lieb in cite{BrLi}: ``Is there a natural way to bound ablavarphi22CN2varphifrac2NN22| abla varphi |_2^2 - C_N^2 | varphi |_frac{2N}{N-2}^2 from below in terms of the `distance' of varphivarphi from the manifold of optimizers in the Sobolev Inequality?'' Establishing stability estimates - also known as quantitative versions of sharp inequalities - of other forms of the Sobolev Inequality, as well as other inequalities, is an active topic. See cite{CiFu}, cite{DoTo}, and cite{FiMa}, for stability estimates involving Sobolev inequalities and cite{CaFi}, cite{DoTo}, and cite{FuMa} for stability estimates on other inequalities. In this dissertation, we extend Bianchi and Egnell's Stability Estimate to a Sobolev Inequality for ``continuous dimensions.'' Bakry, Gentil, and Ledoux have recently proved a sharp extension of the Sobolev Inequality for functions on mathbbR+imesmathbbRnmathbb{R}_+ imes mathbb{R}^n, which can be considered as an extension to ``continuous dimensions.'' V. H. Nguyen determined all cases of equality. The dissertation extends the Bianchi-Egnell stability analysis for the Sobolev Inequality to this ``continuous dimensional'' generalization. The secondary result of this dissertation is a sketch of the proof of an extension of a stability estimate of a single case of a sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality to a whole family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, whose sharp constants and extremals were calculated by Del Pino and Dolbeault in cite{DeDo}. The original stability estimate for the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality was stated and proved by E. Carlen and A. Figalli in cite{CaFi}. The proof for its extension to the entire class of sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities of Del Pino and Dolbeault is a direct application of the extension of the Bianchi-Egnell Stability Estimate to Bakry, Gentil, and Ledoux's extension of the Sobolev Inequality to continuous dimensions.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Francis Seuffer
