Zachęty do uczestnictwa w badaniach ankietowych – przegląd aktualnego stanu wiedzy
Respondent incentives are an element of survey methodology that are shown to impact response rates and selected aspects of survey quality. They are becoming more and more commonly used to counteract the growing reluctance of individuals to respond to surveys. There are different types of incentives, including monetary and non-monetary and conditional or unconditional ones (provided only if a person takes part in the survey or regardless of the person's participation, respectively). The monetary value of the incentive may also differ depending on the survey's budget, and the individual needs and expectations of a respondent. It was proven that different incentives have various effects, but there is no single and optimal recommendation as to which type of incentive should be used. The results depend not only on the incentives themselves, but also on such survey characteristics as the topic, survey mode, target population, the length of the survey or the time when the fieldwork was conducted. The aim of the article is to review the general state of knowledge about the above-mentioned aspects concerning the use of incentives in social surveys, both in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Special attention is paid to the effects of incentives on the response rate, the quality of answers and the sample composition. Additionally, ethical considerations and Polish experiences in the use of incentives are discussed. This article may help survey methodologists in deciding on the optimal type and way of using respondent incentives.
On the Measurement of Welfare, Happiness and Inequality

It contributes to the economic literature in both methodological and empirical terms, with the empirical analysis employing the PACO/CHER, ECHP and GSS datasets. Although human welfare is a multidimensional concept, a classical approach is to simply investigate the distribution of wealth and/or income. Our first chapter analyses income distribution in Poland, using comprehensive data from the year 2000. We use the concept of stochastic dominance to investigate the extent to which the income of certain subgroups (based largely on combinations of gender, education, and region) unambiguously exceeds that of others, and examine and formally assess hypotheses of stochastic dominance using recently developed statistical tests. The results of this approach are contrasted with simple scalar measures of inequality that are conventionally used. We find that males, the higher educated and those living in the urban areas are better off while the regional dominance relationship are difficult to establish. However, to a large extent human welfare draws on subjective feelings of happiness or similar subjective well-being concepts. While self-assessments of well-being can be elicited, the relation of such expressions to the underlying concept is intrinsically problematic. Consequently, in our second and third chapters we present a semiparametric framework that allows for the modeling of latent variables. This item response theory methodology is first applied to assess the differences in \happiness"across selected European states. A more detailed analysis suggests that the genesis of happiness is affected by relative social status; income is more important to high status individuals for example. The third chapter concerns further challenges in happiness measurement in the presence of framing effects and/or differential item functioning (\DIF"). The impact of the ordering of questions on subjective well-being responses is studied under an extended item response theory model incorporating the DIF feature of the survey. Contrary to previous studies, the results indicate that individuals' happiness estimates are largely unbiased when the framing experiment is ignored. The methodology we develop allows for the assessment of framing and DIF effects and permits inter-subject comparison and analysis even when such effects are large
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
A vast – and constantly growing – literature provides evidence on the importance of formal education and cognitive skills on individual wages in contemporary, knowledge-based economies and societies. The OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) provides measures of literacy and numeracy that have been used in numerous analyses. The Polish follow-up study of PIAAC (postPIAAC) includes a measure of another factor of cognitive skills, namely, processing speed. In this paper, we apply the Mincerian wage regression to assess the returns to formal education, numeracy, processing speed, and several control variables using the Polish PIAAC and postPIAAC data. The results confirm the findings from other analyses that formal education matters more than cognitive skills for wages in Poland.Istnieje obszerna – i stale rosnąca – literatura dostarczająca dowodów o znaczeniu formalnego wykształcenia i umiejętności poznawczych dla indywidualnych wynagrodzeń we współczesnych gospodarkach i społeczeństwach opartych na wiedzy. Międzynarodowe Badanie Kompetencji Osób Dorosłych OECD (PIAAC) dostarcza miar umiejętności rozumienia tekstu i rozumowania matematycznego, które są wykorzystywane w wielu analizach. Polskie badanie uzupełniające PIAAC (postPIAAC) obejmuje pomiar innego czynnika umiejętności poznawczych, a mianowicie szybkości kodowania. W niniejszym artykule stosujemy regresję płacową Mincera do oceny zwrotów z edukacji formalnej, umiejętności rozumowania matematycznego, szybkości kodowania i szeregu zmiennych kontrolnych wykorzystując polskie dane PIAAC i postPIAAC.
Dekadę później zainaugurowano podobny projekt w Europie (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, SHARE), w którym Polska bierze udział od 2006 r. Wiele z opisanych 17 badań celowo dąży do utrzymania wzajemnej porównywalności.
