Remarks on defective Fano manifolds
This note continues our previous work on special secant defective (specifically, conic connected and local quadratic entry locus) and dual defective manifolds. These are now well understood, except for the prime Fano ones. Here we add a few remarks on this case, completing the results in our papers (Russo in Math Ann 344:597–617, 2009; Ionescu and Russo in Compos Math 144:949–962, 2008; Ionescu and Russo in J Reine Angew Math 644:145–157, 2010; Ionescu and Russo in Am J Math 135:349–360, 2013; Ionescu and Russo in Math Res Lett 21:1137–1154, 2014); see also the recent book (Russo, On the Geometry of Some Special Projective Varieties, Lecture Notes of the Unione Matematica Italiana, Springer, 2016)
Scientific Evidence and the Law: An Objective Bayesian Formalisation of the Precautionary Principle in Pharmaceutical Regulation
The paper considers the legal tools that have been developed in German pharmaceutical regulation as a result of the precautionary attitude inaugurated by the Contergan decision (1970). These tools are (i) the notion of "well-founded suspicion", which attenuates the requirements for safety intervention by relaxing the requirement of a proved causal connection between danger and source, and the introduction of (ii) the reversal of proof burden in liability norms. The paper focuses on the first and proposes seeing the precautionary principle as an instance of the requirement that one should maximise expected utility. In order to maximise expected utility certain probabilities are required and it is argued that objective Bayesianism offers the most plausible means to determine the optimal decision in cases where evidence supports diverging choices
The effect of breakfast cereal consumption on adolescents' cognitive performance and mood
The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of breakfast consumption on cognitive performance and mood in adolescents, and any interaction that breakfast consumption might have with cognitive load. The rationale for this approach was that the beneficial effects of any intervention with regard to cognitive function may be more readily apparent when more demands are placed on the system. Furthermore, as skipping breakfast is particularly prevalent within this age group, thus, we focused on adolescents who habitually skip breakfast. Cognitive load was modulated by varying the level of difficulty of a series of cognitive tasks tapping memory, attention, and executive functions. Mood measured with Bond-Lader scales (1974) as well as measures of thirst, hunger, and satiety were recorded at each test session both at baseline and after the completion of each test battery. Forty adolescents (mean age = 14:2) participated in this within-subjects design study. According to treatment, all participants were tested before and after the intake of a low Glycaemic index breakfast (i.e., a 35 g portion of AllBran and 125 ml semi-skimmed milk) and before and after no breakfast consumption. Assessment time had two levels: 8.00 am (baseline) and 10.45 am. The orders of cognitive load tasks were counterbalanced. Overall it appeared that following breakfast participants felt more alert, satiated, and content. Following breakfast consumption, there was evidence for improved cognitive performance across the school morning compared to breakfast omission in some tasks (e.g., Hard Word Recall, Serial 3's and Serial 7's). However, whilst participants performance on the hard version of each cognitive task was significantly poorer compared to the corresponding easy version, there was limited evidence to support the hypothesis that the effect of breakfast was greater in the more demanding versions of the tasks. © 2013 Defeyter and Russo

Logistics infrastructures and integration between ports
This research analyzes the North Adriatic area as an ideal logistics platform to compete with northern European ports in terms of transit time, sustainability and economic efficiency. The analysis of the new alliance between different but close ports highlights the main commercial and logistics opportunities that are being created in a specific geographical area called the North Adriatic
Rappresentazioni genitoriali e gravidanza a rischio.
IRMAG: Intervista per le Rappresentazioni Materne in Gravidanza (Ammaniti, Calderoni, Pola, Tambelli, 1999);
Rap.Pa.G.: Intervista per le Rappresentazioni Paterne durante la Gravidanza (Di Vita, Giannone, 2002);
Differenziale Semantico (Camozza, 1977);
La Doppia Luna (Greco, 1999)
Risultati

Strong Fashion and Weak Identity: a Necessary Association?
Fashion has become a fertile field of study for academics across disciplines, now that the rules, once tightly fixed, have been deconstructed. This volume brings together academics from various disciplines - philosophy, sociology, medicine, anthropology, psychology and psychiatry - to examine fashion's complex relationship with post-industrial societies. Herein the authors address, from the standpoint of their respective disciplines, what crucial functions fashion fulfils in the modern world, especially as it relates to the construction and deconstruction of the self. This volume is the result of a conference held by the Social Trends Institute at which the authors presented original papers. The Social Trends Institute is a non-profit research centre that offers institutional and financial support to academics in all fields who research and explore emerging social trends and their effects on human communities. The Institute focuses its research on four main subject areas: family, bioethics, culture and lifestyles, and corporate governance
