Investigating the business case for a zero-energy refurbishment of residential buildings by applying a pre-fabricated façade module
The ambition to renovate the post-war building stock to an energy-neutral quality is getting a lot of attention from social housing corporations and other institutional owners, financial organizations, and users. An effective renovation plan must significantly improve the current energy performance of a target building towards nearly zero-energy levels. A number of facade solutions have been developed in recent years to solve the problem of large-scale renovation of housing. In the Netherlands, several exemplary renovation projects have the ambition to achieve an energy-neutral objective. One such project is the 2ndSkin Façade refurbishment approach for post-war residential buildings.Nevertheless, the market intake of such renovation is currently very slow, as housing associations are reluctant to invest the increased cost of a zero-energy refurbishment, despite the energy savings and ongoing benefits for the occupants.Within the framework of the research project 2ndSkin, this paper presents a prefabricated and integrated façade module that provides the possibility to improve energy performance up to zero-energy use, while ensuring minimum disturbance for the occupants, both during and after renovation. Based on the proposed integrated refurbishment solution, the study presents a financial breakdown of this case-study concept - including options to lower the initial investment - in order to outline a more attractive business case. Firstly, three design variations, ranging from a standard external insulation upgrade to a zero-energy renovation, are compared, using a range of positive, average, and negative values for a series of financial and economic parameters. Subsequently, the financial performance of a zero-energy renovation investment is calculated for three different apartment properties with diverse market values, to determine the circumstances that can justify an energy renovation investment. The analysis showed that, for properties with an intermediate to high market value, the investment can be attractive under current economic and market conditions, but this attractiveness drops significantly for lower-cost properties such as social housing. The study objective is to develop both the technical solution and the related business case to support the implementation of zero-energy refurbishment strategies into diverse real estate market tiers of the residential building stock.Design of ConstrutionDelft ProjectmanagementDesign Conceptualization and CommunicationApplied Ergonomics and Desig
Experiences of consortia for scaling up nearly zero-energy renovations of single-family homes
On average 64 % of the dwellings in Europe are owner-occupied. Although there is an enormous potential to reduce their energy use and hence CO2 emissions, the current average renovation rate is just around 1,2 %. The development of one-stop-shops is expected to increase the market uptake of home renovation. Developing emerging frontrunner consortia of SMEs, this research looks into opportunities and barriers for stimulating business development to develop the supply of integrated nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) renovations of single-family homes.Experiences were collected from frontrunner consortia that want to offer nZEB renovations to owners of single-family homes. Using a business model canvas approach, the main barriers and opportunities were compiled from business development meetings with 24 consortia from five countries. Furthermore, a year after finalizing this exercise, the researchers evaluated the outcomes of the business development.Based on the findings from the emerging consortia, the research identified key issues that are important for business model development. For reaching early adoption of nZEB single-family home renovation, effort is still needed for developing collaboration of SMEs, for improving customer interfaces and for dealing with barriers that emerge after business model development. Consortia are advised to pay specific attention to the use of the business model canvas for structuring their ideas, to discuss the opportunities to jointly develop one-stop-shops, and to seek collaboration with “independent” actors to reach out to larger groups of homeowners. Policy could support emerging consortia as the chances for successful market introduction are high.OLD Housing SystemsOLD Housing Quality and Process Innovatio
Effectiveness of energy renovations: a reassessment based on actual consumption savings
Energy renovations offer unique opportunities to increase the energy efficiency of the built environment and for the existing housing stock, they are the most important solution. Usually, energy savings are based on modelling calculations. However, recent research has shown that the predicted energy consumption differs largely from the actual consumption. In this paper, the effectiveness of energy measures is re-assessed based on actual consumption data. We use a monitoring system, which contains information about the energy performance of around 60% of the Dutch non-profit housing sector (circa 1.2 million dwellings). We connect the data from this monitoring system to actual energy consumption data from Statistics Netherlands on a dwelling level. Using longitudinal analysis methods, from 2010 to 2014, we are able to identify the energy efficiency improvements of the stock and determine the effectiveness of different measures in terms of actual energy savings. The results reveal the actual energy savings of different efficiency measures and highlight the significance of the actual energy consumption when a renovation is planned or realized.OLD Housing Quality and Process Innovatio
Studies of Lagrangian modeling techniques with applications to deep ocean carbon sequestration
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2008.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references. This thesis consists of four separate studies which explore the use of random walk particle tracking (RWPT) in simulating environmental mass transport. Two of the studies also consider the efficacy and marine impact of ocean CO2 sequestration by direct injection. The first study compares RWPT to two other simple Lagrangian techniques (forward and backward Gaussian puff tracking) to simulate mixing beyond the near field of a pollutant discharge. RWPT is found to be more accurate, but also more computationally expensive, thus motivating hybrid approaches where Lagrangian calculations transition to Eulerian schemes in the far field. The second study considers 1D RWPT when strong gradients in ambient diffusivity exist. For step profiles, the work of past investigators is unified and extended, and the Thomson et al. (1997) particle reflection approach is recommended. For piecewise linear profiles, a novel and efficient particle reflection with probability translation approach is proposed. The third study implements RWPT to emulate the tracer transport of an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) using the OGCM's flow and diffusivity fields. A high level of agreement between RWPT and OGCM results is achieved. Particle reflection with probability translation successfully handled sharply varying vertical diffusivities. However, precisely mimicking OGCM calculations proved difficult due to complications in specifying the subgrid scale variation of isopycnal slope and diffusivity in steeply sloped or convectively unstable regions, and in accurately implementing the Gent-McWilliams eddy-induced transport.(cont.) Further development is recommended to resolve spurious upwelling occurring mainly in the Southern Ocean. The utility of RWPT is demonstrated by calculating domain-wide CO2 sequestration efficiencies using a novel book-keeping method. Additional RWPT benefits to oceanographic investigation are also proposed. The fourth study updates the Auerbach et al. (1997) and Caulfield et al. (1997) joint assessment of acute environmental impact to zooplankton resulting from ocean CO2 discharges. Acute toxicity data are used to estimate the cumulative harm accrued by passive organisms drifting through idealized CO2 plumes generated by three promising discharge methods. Results suggest that discharges can be engineered to largely avoid acute impacts, and that ocean carbon sequestration should not be dismissed on the basis of environmental impact alone.by Peter Hampus Israelsson.Ph.D
Africa Online : A Study on the Emulation of Chinese Practices and Policy in the Telecom sectors of Ethiopia and Nigeria
In recent years, Chinese development efforts in Africa have increased in scope making China the second largest investor on the African content with Chinese MNCs dominating multiple markets across the continent. The author investigates whether there is empirical support for the assumption that there is a correlation between market dominance of Chinese MNCs and similarity in policy and practices to those of China, an assumption based on Eleanor Westney’s study on the emulation of organizational models in late 19th century Japan. To affirm this correlation and describe where it exists, the author examines the regulation of the telecom markets in Ethiopia and Nigeria, two cases where Chinese MNCs have varying degrees of control over the telecom market. Whether or not the studied cases share similarities with the policy and practices of China is studied using the functional method of comparative law as described by Mark Van Hoecke. The study is based on data collected from Freedom House’s reports on freedom on the net which scrutinizes legislation, court cases and the behaviour of government institutions in 65 countries. The author then discusses similarities and differences between the studied cases and China, concluding that the before mentioned correlation does exist to a certain extent and that further research is required
Textual Negotiations with Readers in Equiano's The Interesting Narrative : The expectations of an African autobiography author in the late 18th Century abolitionist movement
Authors of slave narratives faced expectations beyond those of the authors of most other autobiographical texts. Olaudha Equiano's The Interesting Narrative nonetheless found both considerable success in his lifetime and lasting recognition for its contribution to the abolitionist cause. This essay will look at the relations, ideas and expectations that Equiano had to navigate when writing the book, and whether or not he adapated the text to them. The analysis will make use of Kerry Sinanan's research into slave narratives and abolitionist literature, Vincent Carretta's writings about Equiano and The Interesting Narrative, as well as Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson's theory of autobiographical writing and their schema of autobiographical acts. The Interesting Narrative contains several instances of conflicts between the interests Equiano navigated when writing it, and makes compromises between these interests in order to satisfy the reader, while at the same time resisting sterotypes of Africans held at the time

From bag to string. - A translation of traditional Irish piping music for the guitar
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this essay is to examine and summarize traditional styles of playing in specific examples of the uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes) in Irish traditional music and work out tangible methods for recreating this in melody playing on the acoustic guitar. This will be achieved by transcribing five different recordings of the uilleann pipes in great detail. The transcriptions will then be thoroughly analyzed by the author, who will work out what can be played on the guitar, what cannot be played, and what can be played through some modification. The objective is to find and explore new ways to develop melody playing on the guitar, while still keeping the essential stylistic traits in the styles of playing from the recordings. Four parameters will be used as a starting point in the work with the recordings, as a limitation. The essay is mainly written for guitarists with earlier experience in playing Irish traditional music, and with good knowledge about the genre.
