A Comparative Study of the Visions and Styles of Francis Imbuga and John Ruganda

No full text
The aim of our study is to compare how the prevailing social and political conditions in East Africa, especially in the post-independence period, influence the dramas of Francis Imbuga and John Ruganda. We set out to examine the influence of East African reality on their plays, and to explore some of the dramatic techniques they have adopted for effective transmission of this reality. Thus, our major task is to compare the vision of the two playwrights, as well as their techniques of dramatic construction. It is our key premise that social, historical and political realities in East Africa form a creative reservoir of the region1s drama. East African drama has acquired a sharp socio-political focus. It manifestly responds to familiar but specific historical developments. It is our contention that, a close analysis of the dramas of leading playwri9hts like Imbuga and Ruganda reveals the socio-political temper in the society. Because of its social commitment, a critic of East African drama must, of necessity, assess its contributions to social development. These contributions include values, attitudes, vision; and their manner of artistic presentation. We proceed on the premises that East African drama functions as a tool for social change. It explores revolutionary themes, through use of novel strategies. As skilled artists, Imbuga and Ruganda, we believe, creatively present revolutionary ideas through equally revolutionary dramatic techniques. We are concerned with how they perceive the East African society, and how their perception affects their style of dramatization. The Thesis is divided into four chapter$, and a conclusion. Chapter one focuses on the statement of the problem, justification of the study, the scope of the study and definition of the key terms. Chapter Two traces the political motif in the dramas of Imbuga and Ruganda. It is sub-divided into two sections. Section one mainly focuses on Betrayal in the city, Game of Silence and The Floods; plays which deal with Leadership perversion in the society. Section two of this chapter enumerates the effects of leadership distortion. It mainly deals with Man of Kafira and Music without Tears. In Chapter Three, which is also sub-divided into two sections, we focus on power struggle in the society and, aftermath. The plays primarily analysed in this section are The Successor and The Burdens. Chapter Four deals with dramatic techniques. The techniques are discussed from four broad categories, namely: characterization, dramatic structure, appropriation of folkloristic material and Symbolic significant ion. The conclusion, which forms Chapter Five, is a comparative synthesis of the major aspects of style any vision discussed. It also isolates possible tasks for future research

The study focused on the representation of family dynamics in John Ruganda's plays The Burdens and Black Mamba. It aimed to examine how family relationships and dynamics are portrayed, investigate the socio-economic factors influencing these dynamics, and assess the impact of family dynamics on the characters' well-being. The research involved a critical and thorough internalization of the plays, careful reading of relevant literature, and the use of authentic journals and articles, accurately relating them to the topic. A close analysis approach was adopted to systematically analyze information, leading to useful recommendations and conclusions about family dynamics. The Burdens and Black Mamba were the primary research instruments, supplemented by documentary guides. Data was analyzed through descriptive and textual analysis, confirming that family dynamics are represented through various characters in the plays. The research highlighted the crucial role of family in the lives of individuals in any community. These plays offer valuable insights into the interplay between socio-economic factors, familial relationships, and individual well-being, shedding light on the challenges of family life in the modern world. These findings are discussed in the subsequent chapters of the research report

ABSTRACT This research report is an investigation of the theme of violence and the use of memory in John Ruganda’s two plays: The Floods and The Burdens. This study examines the representation of a historic period in Uganda’s history as represented in Ruganda’s two plays. The study focuses on the reign of Idi Amin, Uganda’s former dictator. It gives a detailed examination of the use of violence by the state as a tool for achieving and maintaining power. I argue that the totalitarian state uses violence to assert its power and to eliminate its enemies. I also examine how Ruganda represents Idi Amin’s regime in The Floods, focusing on various forms of violence and how he uses the setting of the play, characterization and dialogue to highlight the extent of violence in the regime. The first chapter gives the background of the study focusing on the social and political contexts in which the plays were set. The second chapter deals with violence both by the state and violence in the private space in The Burdens which deploys the space of the family to critique violence by the state. In this chapter, I also discuss the politics of dead bodies. Here I argue that the desire of the state to stay in power does not end at controlling the people while they are alive but that it includes how dead bodies are (mis) treated. In the final chapter I discuss the role of memory in the two plays. I argue that in The Burdens, memory is an escape zone where characters hide from their unpleasant present. In The Floods, I try to show how memory forms part of the narrative of the play in that characters retell their experiences for purposes of unfolding ‘facts’ about the regime

From a Habit to a Husband: Representation of the Intersection between Religion and Masculinities in John Ruganda\u27s Play, The Burdens (1972)

No full text
This paper examines how John Ruganda represents the intersection between religion and masculinities in his play, The Burdens (1972), which imagines an ex-Catholic nun marrying and bringing up a family. It argues that literary texts are an important avenue through which the intersection between religion and gender can be explored, leading to a rich harvest of nuanced insights. Data is collected through a close reading of the play under analysis, within the socio-political context in which it was written and produced, that is, the politically turbulent decade following Uganda\u27s flag independence in 1962, characterised "among others" by events like the abolition of kingdoms by the Prime Minister, Milton Obote, and his ouster in a military coup by his army commander, General Idi Amin, on 25 January, 1971. The analysis of the text is guided by insights drawn from selected scholars of masculinities featured in Helen Nabasuta Mugambi and Tuzyline Jita Allanâ\u27s edited volume, entitled Masculinities in African and Cultural Texts (2010)

The Forms and Causes of Domestic Violence as Depicted in The Burdens and Black Mamba by John Ruganda

No full text
This paper examines the forms and causes of domestic violence in John Ruganda’s The Burdens (1972) and Black Mamba (1973). It is set to bring out how domestic violence affects characters in the plays and as well as people in society since it is a prevalent act in the universe. This paper establishes that domestic violence occurs in many forms, including physical aggression or assault (hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, trespassing, harassment) or threats thereof; sexual abuse, emotional abuse, controlling or domineering, intimidation, stalking, passive covert abuse (neglect), and economic deprivation. John Ruganda’s The Burdens expresses most forms of violence but physical assault stands out. The second issue is to establish the causes of domestic violence as explored in the two plays by John Ruganda. This paper has discovered that the bit of culture that accentuates domestic violence is inheritance. Black Mamba has a twist as far as the economic factors play a role in the cause of domestic violence. Economic factors are found to play a significant role in the causes of domestic violence. These factors include women’s economic dependence on men, limited access to cash and credit, discriminatory laws regarding inheritance, property rights, use of communal lands and maintenance after divorce or widowhood, limited access to employment in formal and informal sectors, and limited access to education and training for women. The legal causes include lesser legal status of women either by written law or by practice, inheritance, the legal definition of rape and domestic abuse, low level of legal literacy among women, and insensitive treatment of women and girls
