Multimedia signals and systems / Srdjan Stanković, Irena Orović, Ervin Sejdić.
engineering bookfair2015Includes bibliographical references and index.xxv, 349 pages :"Multimedia signals include different data types (text, sound, graphics, picture, animations, video, etc.), which can be time-dependent (sound, video and animation) or spatially-dependent (images, text and graphics). Hence, the multimedia systems represent an interdisciplinary cross-section of the following areas: digital signal processing, computer architecture, computer networks and telecommunications. "Multimedia Signals and Systems" is an introductory text, designed for students or professionals and researchers in other fields, with a need to learn the basics of signals and systems. A considerable emphasis is placed on the analysis and processing of multimedia signals (audio, images, video). Additionally, the book connects these principles to other important elements of multimedia systems such as the analysis of optical media, computer networks, QoS, and digital watermarking"-- Provided by publisher

Dramatized Adaptation of Lázár Ervin\u27s Fairy Tale The Blue and the Yellow in a Kindergarten Environment
In the first part of the paper, some activity models implemented in university courses will be presented, in which the students are introduced, during the dramatization of fairy tales in the framework of joint creative work, to a variety of performance techniques, playing and experimenting with the learned theater effect elements. One of the aims of these courses is to help the students become familiar with fairy tale dramatization forms and fairy tale types that are suitable for integrating educational areas particularly important from the point of view of the development of children growing up in disadvantaged environments (e.g. story content to overcome language disadvantages and incomplete social competences). In the second part of the paper, four types of dramatization models of a particular fairy tale (A kék meg a sárga [The Blue and the Yellow] by Hungarian author Ervin Lázár) will be presented. The practical experiences, reflections, and professional lessons to be learned from the kindergarten implementation of the drafts for the models will be presented, focusing, in addition to the artistic experience, on how the realized adaptations of Ervin Lázár\u27s fairy tale serve the development of emotional and cognitive competences, the overcoming of learning disadvantages arising from disadvantaged situations, and the community integration of the children concerned. In the first part of the paper, some activity models implemented in university courses will be presented, in which the students are introduced, during the dramatization of fairy tales in the framework of joint creative work, to a variety of performance techniques, playing and experimenting with the learned theater effect elements. Sperner type theorems with excluded subposets
Let F be a family of subsets of an n-element set. Sperner's theorem says that if there is no inclusion among the members of F then the largest family under this condition is the one containing all ⌊ frac(n, 2) ⌋-element subsets. The present paper surveys certain generalizations of this theorem. The maximum size of F is to be found under the condition that a certain configuration is excluded. The configuration here is always described by inclusions. More formally, let P be a poset. The maximum size of a family F which does not contain P as a (not-necessarily induced) subposet is denoted by La (n, P). The paper is based on a lecture of the author at the Jubilee Conference on Discrete Mathematics [Banasthali University, January 11-13, 2009], but it was somewhat updated in December 2010. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Adoption and diffusion of no tillage practices in Southern Spain olive groves
This paper analyses the process of adoption of no tillage in South-eastern Spain’s olive groves. Olive tree groves in South-eastern Spain’s mountainous areas are subject to a high risk of soil erosion, which is the main environmental problem for this crop, and have to incur in high costs of soil conservation. This results in a greater difficulty to comply with the practices required to benefit from both the single payment and agri-environmental schemes. In many high-steeped areas, farmers have opted for non-tillage practices as an alternative to other conservation practices. Using our own data from a survey carried out in 2006 among 215 olive tree farmers from the Granada Province in Southern Spain regarding the adoption of soil conservation and management practices, we model the diffusion process of no tillage practices using several specifications (logistic, Gompertz and exponential). We also estimate an ordered probit model to analyse which socio-economic and institutional factors determine the adoption of no tillage. Our results show that 90% of farmers in the area of study perform no tillage with either localized (21%) or no localized (69%) application of weedicides. The diffusion process of no tillage has been very intense since the middle nineties, and has been based on the interactions among farmers in the area of study rather than in external factors such as EU policies or extension services. Among other relevant factors that positively affect the adoption of no tillage practices in general, such as farm size and irrigation, the probability of a farmer adopting no tillage with non-localized application of weedicides increases when there is a relative that will continue with the farming activity, what causes the farmer to incorporate long term effects in his farming decisions, when the farmer is only a manager or when he bought the farm rather than inherited it (i.e. on more professionalized farms), and with his educational level. These results confirm some findings from previous studies in other nearby areas.Spanish olive groves, soil erosion, no tillage, Crop Production/Industries, Land Economics/Use,

The effects of African American and European American males' behavior styles on preservice teachers' ratings of acceptability, achievement, and aggression.
University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. December 2010. Major: Educational Psychology. Advisor: DR. Susan Rose. 1 computer file (PDF); x, 109 pages, appendices A-B.African American students are overrepresented in the category of Emotional Disturbance under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act across the United States. This study examined how preservice teachers rated African American and European American students on three ratings scales across four culturally mediated behaviors: (a) movement style, (b) self advocacy style, (c) greeting style, and (d) volume of voice. The three dependent variables were an author-created acceptability index and the achievement and aggression scales from the Adjective Checklist (Gough & Heilbrun, 1983). Subjects included 211 preservice teachers enrolled in graduate level education courses. Preservice teachers were divided into groups and shown 4 of 16 videos depicting African American and European American students engaging in typical school behaviors in culturally mediated manners. Factorial analysis of variance was used to analyze the data. Preservice teachers rated European American behavior styles as more favorable than African American styles in 8 of 12 effects studied and African American behavior styles as more favorable in 2 of 12. Fewer significant effects were found strictly on the basis of the race of the students with 3 of 12 effects showing students of African American race as more favorable and 1 of 12 effects showing students of European American race as more favorable.Cichy, Bryan Ervin.
