Today the Scientific Library in Zadar stores three chronotaxes of Zadar bishops and archbishops whose author must have been Valerius Ponte (1603–1679): Ms 865, folio 32–38, designated here as Catalogus A, then Ms 865, folio 43–44a, here designated as Catalogus C and Ms 112, folio 31–35, here mentioned as Catalogus D. The names of the bishops and the archbishops have been taken from Ponte’s Historia ecclesiae Iadrensis, Ms 112, folio 15a–27a, which is designated as Catalogus B in order to facilitate the reading. When listing the bishops all the said chronotaxes are almost identical, listing twelve bishops. When archbishops are in question they differ to a large extent which only shows that Ponte could not have been the author of all of them. Ponte is the author of only the first chronotaxis (Catalogus A). This series is the author’s working copy, it was written after 1637 and it was completed during the time of archbishop Teodor Balbo; alongside the names of the bishops it mentions 48 archbishops. The other two chronotaxes differ, catalogue C mentioning 50 archbishops and Catalogue D 53 archbishops; the Nin bishop Marko Loredan is mentioned alongside them as the apostolic administrator (Catalogue A makes no mention of him). Both chronotaxes conclude with the name of the archbishop Karaman. The above mentioned Catalogus B lists alongside the bishops 48 archbishops and the series is completed with the name of the archbishop Proli and it explicitly calls upon Ponte’s argument in The History of the Zadar Church, when they record the facts concerning the archbishop Jacob de Fuligneo. This fact is obvious evidence that an unknown hand compiled and worked upon Ponte’s text. Today the contribution to historical knowledge made by Valerius Ponte cannot be underestimated nor should it be deprecated but rather it has to be positioned within the context of 17th century historiography. With his labors he paved the way for modern historiography pointing out the significance of archival material dispersed throughout various archives; today for the most part this has been stored in the State Archive in Zadar and in the Archive of the Zadar Archbishopric. Ponte’s labor has not passed unnoticed but historiography has valued and values his contribution to a better knowledge of the past of Zadar. Ivan Lucius Lučić who was his friend up to the time of his death was the first to use his findings and afterwards he had a special influence on Daniel Farlati. In the fifth volume of his Illyricum sacrum the latter refers to Ponte’s arguments. Valerius Ponte also influenced the later Zadar historians in the 18th and the 19th century: Ivan Zanotti-Tanzlingher and Carlo F. Bianchi are only the two most influential individuals. The greatness of Ponte’s work and of his chronotaxes of Zadar church fathers consists in the fact that he was amongst the first to try to purify the Medieval chronicles by mentioning only reliable persons whose authenticity could be proven by available sources. In this chore he had great success and his attempt represents a huge step forward which can be looked upon with envy even by contemporary Church historians..

Seasonal dynamics and mortality rates of Calanus helgolandicus over two years at a station in the English Channel

    No full text
The stage-specific abundance and egg production rates of Calanus helgolandicus were determined on a near-weekly basis over 2 yr at a 50 m deep station in the SW English Channel (Stn L4). Mortality rates were derived using a vertical life-table approach across eggs, nauplii and also the CV–adult stage pair. The results demonstrate strong seasonal patterns in the mortality rates of egg and nauplii and the CV–adult stage pair, but with different relative rates and somewhat different seasonalities. Mortality was highest in the egg and egg–NI stages, averaging 6.1 and ~1.5 d–1, respectively, with the percentage surviving through the egg–NI stage pair often <<10%. Although the instantaneous removal rate of eggs was significantly related to adult abundance (p < 0.001, r2 = 0.221), densities of adult C. helgolandicus seemed too low to account for these rates. Examination of the relationship between CV–adult female mortality and the abundance of the dominant invertebrate predators revealed statistically significant relationships (p < 0.001 r2 = 0.276 for chaetognaths; p < 0.001 r2 = 0.125 for siphonophores); however, the variability explained by temperature was much higher (p < 0.001 r2 = 0.652). The egg–NI and NI–NII stage pairs also showed a highly statistically significant positive relationship between mortality and temperature. For the first time we compared mortality rates for egg–NI using 2 vertical methods—one using measurements of egg and NI abundance (Method A) the other using egg production rates and NI abundance (Method B)—and found the two to be similar, although Method B gave higher values. Finally, as many mortality equations do not consider the bias resulting from the presence of eggs incapable of hatching in the field, we derived and applied new equations for mortality of eggs and egg–NI (Method A) that incorporated egg hatching success. At low hatching success or low mortality rates, this correction can alter estimates of mortality rates significantly

    Consumer Perception of Bread Quality

    No full text
Bread contains a wide range of important nutritional components which provide a positive effect on human health. However, the consumption of bread in Belgium is declining during the last decades. This is due to factors such as changing eating patterns and a increasing choice of substitutes like breakfast cereals and fast foods. The aim of this study is to investigate consumer’s quality perception of bread towards sensory, health and nutrition attributes. Consumer’s quality perception of bread seams to be determined by sensory and health attributes. Three clusters of consumers are identified based on these attributes. In the first cluster, consumers’ quality perception of bread is not dependent on the health attributes it embraces, but to some extent on sensory attributes. For the second cluster, both health and sensory attributes appear to influence quality perception. In the third cluster only sensory attributes appear to be important in determining quality perception, though in a negative direction. The results of this study will possibly help health professionals and policy makers to systematically inform the consumers about the positive effects of bread and its components. Furthermore, firms can use the result to build up a tailor-made marketing strategy.Consumer, Quality perception, Bread, Demand and Price Analysis, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

This essay has its origins in studies about translation theories and in the knowledge acquisition about the aspects related with the production of the original work. Just after those studies, was established the position as translator. And only after the contextualization of the original work and the analysis of the author characteristics it was started the translation process of the tale Lizards in Jamshyd's Courtyard written by William Faulkner, this tale is part of the novel Hamlet written by the same author. To maintain the strength of the original tale there was not just a concern about getting equivalents or translating word by word , but was to be very close to the characteristics of the original tale; considering what is heterogeneous in the linguistic and cultural situations between the English language in which the original tale was written, and the Portuguese language from Brazil where the tale has been translated. The hypothesis, the possible solutions to the problems found, and the decisions taken in this research are based on: Lawrence Venutti, Georges Mounin, John C. Cattford and Antoine Berman's theories

Design and MEMS Microfabrication of an Optrode for Combined Optogenetics and Electrophysiology Studies

    No full text
Optogenetics is a biological technique that uses light to control cells in living tissues, typically neurons, that have been genetically modified to express light-sensitive ion channels. Using this technique, neuroscientists can investigate the neural circuits underlying neurological diseases with a higher spatio-temporal resolution when compared to other known neuromodulation methods. As employed today, optogenetics requires methods for guiding sufficiently strong and precisely timed light to specific brain regions, while the experimental subject carries out behaviors of interest. For this role, miniaturized devices (namely optrodes) shall be properly engineered to hold the required components (e.g. light source, recording electrodes, etc) whilst complying with some surgical and biocompatibility issues. In this work, an optrode was designed and fabricated using an in-house MEMS microfabrication technology. The custom-made device featured (a) low impedance level with TiN-coated microelectrodes, (b) sufficient optical power delivery through on-chip-uLEDs, and (c) miniaturized dimensions with tolerable tissue damage during long-term animal experiments. In addition, different optrodes were fabricated to allow different experiment conditions (i.e. chronic or acute implantation, multi-site or multi-layer studies). A MEMS cavity for the on-chip-uLED was engineered on the optrode's shaft in order to further minimize the induced tissue damage during the surgical implantation. Last but not least, this customized optrode is also compatible with our in-house CMOS technology and can be further upgraded with additional electronic functionalities, as well as with the deposition of novel materials. After the microfabrication and system integration, in-vitro experiments on three different designs were performed to characterize electrically the electrode impedance, the control of uLED's light intensity and pulse frequency

Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

Competing conventions: The Big Branders’ struggle to incorporate new quality conceptions in the Norwegian food market

    No full text
The paper addresses recent changes in the Norwegian agrifood industry from the analytical perspective of quality conventions. Storper and Salais’ “worlds of production” plus Boltanski and Thévenots’ “orders of worth” are used as a basis for the empirical study. First, the paper discusses how the largest Norwegian branders try to strategically adapt to “novel” quality attributes like health-enhancing food, origin/terroir, environmental sustainability and ethics. Second, the paper investigates the companies’ quality signalling strategy: How are these “novel” qualities communicated to consumers? Multiple options are available: Do they attempt to systematically incorporate “novel qualities” into their private brand equity (“conventionalizing qualities”)? Do they prefer a co-labelling scheme with a third party control, or do they use any other measures for quality signalling? The paper thereby discusses how the largest Norwegian branders in the food sector cope with conflicting and competing quality conventions.Food quality, economics of convention., Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
