Reviving contemporary urban design: case of historic city Sultanpur LodhI, Punjab, India
Cities have a long and varied urban history, but cities in developing countries have had a relatively brief experience with the modern city. What are the current urban ideas of Indian Cities? How does this ideology affect modern city design? And how is city design related to traditional City design of related province? These questions have led the author to undertake this study. Urban planning and Designing into towns is the beginning of the difficulties of cities’ futures. Whether the main problem is the way of designing and planning or the policy of increasing the population, what New Towns today mainly suffer is the lack of identity and the differentiation between other cities.“For Indian cities, need of multiple models for well-functioning cities with some common ingredients, including a commitment to equality of opportunity, smart designs for upcoming cities, improved housing facilities, smart designs for upcoming cities and a drive to improve the quality of life for habitants has been felt in the twenty first century.”Sultanpur Lodhi with its legacy to have historic palaces, vital landscape, relics from various architectural styles offers a possibility to explore city module for reviving of historical cities. It was found that 81 percent of the urban population in city lived in overcrowded and substandard houses (Office of Punjab urban planning and development authority, 2017). Therefore this is one amongst the top three most densely populated cities in Punjab, India. Its culture combines Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Sikh and British influences. As the economy of this city is based on Agro based industries like Rice Sheller and other small scale industries and subsequent housing demand, there is need to protect vibrant culture and impressions. A fine tunings between available local resources and Contemporary urban design practice need to be explored. The study of Sultanpur Lodhi attempts to give reviving a historical and coherent summary of fragmented information about Punjab’s urban design practice
Pakistan: Breaking out of stagflation into sustained growth
This paper proposes that the underlying cause of the macroeconomic problems facing Pakistan today are a series of supply shocks which have constrained output growth. It is argued that while the current debate has solely focused on government expenditures and revenues, it is critical to also address the acute energy shortages which is constraining supply. The paper goes on to present four recommendations for breaking out of the present stagflation: (i) prudent macroeconomic management, (ii) reviving the role of the government in development while restoring fiscal balance, (iii) loosening monetary policy in order to spur the private sector, and (iv) improving social safety nets.Economic Growth, Supply Shock, Pakistan
A Small Book On Zanzibar
A small book on ZANZIBAR was written (by Abdulaziz Y. Lodhi, Anette and Gunnar Rydström, and the illustrator Benkt Öberg) and published at Författares Bokmaskin (Writers’ Book Machine) in Stockholm in early 1979, both in Swedish and English. The book was published to fill a void and give Swedish readers an easy-to-read book about the Zanzibar of the time that completely had come into the limelight of the mainland part (formerly the Republic of Tanganyika) of the United Republic of Tanzania. There was not much about Zanzibar available in Swedish or other Nordic languages, but in Swedish and other Nordic languages there were dozens of books, treatises and essays about Tanzania in which Zanzibar was mentioned in passing, and sometimes Zanzibar was not even on maps of Tanzania or Africa. The former powerful empire in pre-colonial times had now been almost forgotten! In 1979, some libraries in Sweden had the Finnish-Swedish author Gustav "Guss" Mattsson's travelogue En herre for till Zanzibar (1914), and the Danish author Hakon Mielche's travelogue ZANZIBAR (1954) in Jörgen Fischer's Swedish translation from 1957 published by the Folket i bilds ( FIB) in Stockholm. Nowadays, the book is available in an audio recording from 2007 made by Sören Johansson, Talboks- och punktskriftsbiblioteket (TPB), Enskede, Sweden. On 7 October 2021, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Professor Emeritus Abdulrazak Salim Gurnah, born in Zanzibar but now a British citizen. This major event put Zanzibar back on the world map!Because Gurnah is known for exploring migration, colonialism, racism, exclusion, etc. and regarded internationally by literary scholars as one of the most interesting post-colonial writers and critics, many Swedes have since sought in vain for more information about Zanzibar.Since 1979 when the original edition of a small book on ZANZIBAR saw the light of day, not much has been written about Zanzibar in Swedish and other Nordic languages, apart from newspaper articles about tourism and the like. Therefore, we have reprinted the book with a new Forword, a Prplogue and an Epilogue to update the factual information about Zanzibar and to some extent correct the picture.</p

اجتہاد الرسول ﷺ از نادیہ شریف العمری کا تعارفی مطالعہ: An Introductory Study of Ijtihad Al-Rasool ﷺ by Nadia Sharif Al-Omari
The biography of the Prophet ﷺ is a subject that has been extensively written about since the first century of Hijra, continues to be written about today, and will undoubtedly remain a topic of scholarly and devotional interest in the future. This subject holds religious, academic, historical, and contemporary significance, prompting Muslim scholars of every era to contribute to its exploration. Alongside men, women have also engaged in writing on this subject to express their devotion and love for the Prophet ﷺ. From ancient to modern times, women have played their part in this field, and while their contributions are fewer in comparison to men, their numbers are steadily increasing in modern times. Women have also explored various aspects of the Prophet's ﷺ biography in the Arabic language. One notable work in this context is "Ijtihad Al-Rasool" authored by Nadia Sharif Al-Omari. This book uniquely combines the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) with the life of the Prophet ﷺ, analyzing whether the Prophet ﷺ engaged in ijtihad (independent reasoning). The author meticulously presents evidence supporting her conclusion that the Prophet ﷺ did indeed engage in ijtihad. This article provides a research-based and analytical study of her book. It begins by discussing the biographical details of the author, followed by an introduction to the book. Subsequently, the writing style of the author and the nuanced insights within her work are critically examined. Finally, the findings and recommendations of the study are presented.
