Role of Curcumin and Paclitaxel in oral cancer: an in vitro study
No full textIntroduction: Oral cancer is a major global health concern, which can be worse in some regions with high rates of alcohol and tobacco use. Despite advances in drug therapy and surgical techniques, treating patients with oral cancer remains challenging, and sometimes standard chemotherapy regimens are insufficient. Therefore, innovative therapeutic approaches are crucial, such as investigating the use of natural compounds like Curcumin in conjunction with chemotherapy drugs like Paclitaxel.
Objectives: The main goal of the present study is to explore the therapeutic potential of combining Curcumin with Paclitaxel to induce oral cancer cell death.
Materials and methods: We performed MTT assays, flow cytometry and long-term colony formation assays over seven days on two oral cancer cell lines (SCC-9 and SCC-25) using Curcumin and Paclitaxel as monotherapy and combined.
Results: Cytotoxicity tests shown that Curcumin and Paclitaxel combined produce synergistic effects on SCC-25 cells and antagonistic effects on SCC-9 cells. Through flow cytometry we observed that the addition of Curcumin to Paclitaxel in SCC-9 cells did not increase the percentage of apoptotic cells, which was observed in SCC-25 cells. Long-term colony formation trials confirmed these results. The antagonistic and synergistic effects observed in drug combinations are possibly due to the distinct characteristics of SCC-25 and SCC-9 cells thus highlighting the importance of considering the individual characteristics of cancer when developing new therapeutic strategies.
Conclusion: The combination of Curcumin with Paclitaxel showed promising results and more tests will be performed.Introdução: O cancro oral representa um problema de saúde global, com maior prevalência em regiões de elevado consumo de álcool e tabaco. Apesar dos avanços terapêuticos, o seu tratamento continua a ser um desafio, sendo que as terapias atuais se revelam muitas vezes insuficientes. Assim, explorar novas abordagens terapêuticas é muito importante. Neste estudo investigou-se o potencial terapêutico da combinação de Curcumina com Paclitaxel com o objetivo de aumentar a eficácia deste fármaco no tratamento do cancro oral.
Objetivo: O objetivo foi explorar o efeito da combinação de Curcumina com Paclitaxel na indução da morte celular de células de cancro oral.
Materiais e métodos: Foram realizados ensaios de citotoxidade (MTT), citometria de fluxo e ensaios de formação de colónias em duas linhas celulares de cancro oral (SCC-9 e SCC-25) utilizando a Curcumina e o Paclitaxel.
Resultados: Os ensaios de citotoxicidade demonstraram que a Curcumina e o Paclitaxel combinados produzem efeitos sinérgicos nas células SCC-25 e efeitos antagónicos nas células SCC-9. Através da citometria de fluxo observámos que a adição de Curcumina ao Paclitaxel nas células SCC-9 não aumentou a percentagem de células apoptóticas, o que se observou nas células SCC-25. Os ensaios de formação de colónias confirmaram esses resultados. Os efeitos antagónicos e sinérgicos observados nas combinações de fármacos devem-se possivelmente às características distintas das células SCC-25 e SCC-9 destacando assim a importância de considerar as características individuais do cancro ao desenvolver novas estratégias terapêuticas.
Conclusão: A combinação de Curcumina com Paclitaxel mostrou resultados promissores e mais ensaios serão realizados
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
