    Computational Analysis and Regression Laws for Nozzle Erosion Prediction in Hybrid Rockets

    The erosion of the nozzle throat can represent one of the major limitations against the future widespread use of hybrid rocket engines (HREs) in the space industry. In fact, nozzle erosion in HREs can be more severe and harder to predict than in solid rockets due to the higher concentration of oxidizing species in the combustion products and to mixture ratio shifts and/or throttling. Therefore, an accurate understanding of the erosion phenomenon is of fundamental importance for the technological advancement of HREs. This work is focused on the investigation of graphite nozzle erosion in HREs burning high-density polyethylene with two different oxidizers, oxygen and nitrous oxide. First, the results of a computational fluid dynamics parametric analysis are used to derive closed-form regression laws for the rapid estimation of nozzle throat erosion and wall temperature depending on chamber pressure and mixture ratio. Then, a one-dimensional transient heat conduction solver is loosely coupled with the aforementioned regression laws, allowing to reconstruct the transient heating process within the solid. The obtained numerical results are validated against experimental data. Finally, the effect of gas-phase reactions on the heterogeneous reactions occurring at the nozzle surface is highlighted when moving from fuel-rich to oxidizer-rich conditions

    Validation of fluid-particle interaction force relationships in binary-solid suspensions

    In this work several relationships governing solid-fluid dynamic interaction forces were validated against experimental data for a single particle settling in a suspension of other smaller particles. It was observed that force relationships based on Lattice-Boltzmann simulations did not perform as well as other interaction types tested. Nonetheless, it is apparent that, in the case of a suspension of different particle types, it is important that the correct choice is made as to how the contribution to the overall fluid-particle interaction force is split between buoyancy and drag. Experimental evidence clearly suggests that the "generalized" Archimedes' principle (where the foreign particle is considered to displace the whole suspension and not just the fluid) provides the best result

    Role of Multiphase Modeling on Nozzle Thermochemical Erosion in Solid Rocket Motors

    Because of the extremely severe thermal conditions faced in solid rocket nozzles, ablative thermal protection systems are employed to protect the underlying structures. Due to the harsh thermochemical environment in which they operate, ablative materials are eroded during motor firings, leading to performance losses. Modern high-energy solid propellants are loaded with high mass fractions of metal particles which, during combustion, burn to form liquid metal oxide droplets, leading to a complex two-phase flow. The presence of these particles substantially modify the flow features inside the nozzle, depending on the particle density and dimension. The present work aims to investigate the effect of the two-phase flow on the nozzle thermochemical erosion process, a coupled phenomena which has not received much attention in the open literature. To this goal, a finite-rate ablation model is integrated into a two-phase Navier–Stokes flow solver, including an Eulerian-Eulerian model able to deal with particles polydispersion. The HIPPO test motor is used as a test case. Multiphase effects are shown to have a relevant role on the nozzle thermochemical erosion only in case of particles smaller than 2 μm. In fact, in case of larger particles, the nozzle erosion process can be reasonably represented by a single-phase CFD simulation, completely neglecting the presence of particles. For such a case, a maximum discrepancy of only 1.5% at throat is obtained with respect to a more general but also more computationally demanding multiphase solution. On the other hand, it is also shown how single-phase simulations employing the heavy-gas approximation are able to qualitatively predict the effects of very small particles on nozzle erosion

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
