This essay seeks to examine the singularities of Alex, o amigo francês, a juvenile novel by Carlos Correia. Standing out for its careful and appealing narrative texture, this text gives an account of the common hesitation and affective (in) adaptation of second generation migrants either to the host country or to the homeland of his family. Registering sociopolitical notes subtly critical, the author portrays the city of Paris, with the obvious counterpoint to the Portuguese space, especially if perceived by youthful look.CIEC - Centro de Investigação em Estudos da Criança, UM (UI 317 da FCT), Portugal; Fundos Nacionais através da FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) e cofinanciado pelo Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) através do COMPETE 2020 – Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) no âmbito do CIEC (Centro de Investigação em Estudos da Criança, da Universidade do Minho) com a referência POCI-01-0145-FEDER-00756

BackgroundCivilian posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and combat PTSD are major public health concerns. Although a number of psychosocial risk factors have been identified related to PTSD risk, there are no accepted, robust biological predictors that identify who will develop PTSD or who will respond to early intervention following trauma. We wished to examine whether genetic risk for PTSD can be mitigated with an early intervention.Method65 emergency department patients recruited in 2009–2010 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, who met criterion A of DSM-IV PTSD received either 3 sessions of an exposure intervention, beginning in the emergency department shortly after trauma exposure or assessment only. PTSD symptoms were assessed 4 and 12 weeks after trauma exposure. A composite additive risk score was derived from polymorphisms in 10 previously identified genes associated with stress-response (ADCYAP1R1, COMT, CRHR1, DBH, DRD2, FAAH, FKBP5, NPY, NTRK2, and PCLO), and gene x treatment effects were examined. The intervention included 3 sessions of imaginal exposure to the trauma memory and additional exposure homework. The primary outcome measure was the PTSD Symptom Scale-Interview Version or DSM-IV–based PTSD diagnosis in patients related to genotype and treatment group.ResultsA gene x intervention x time effect was detected for individual polymorphisms, in particular the PACAP receptor, ADCYAP1R1, as well as with a combined genotype risk score created from independent SNP markers. Subjects who did not receive treatment had higher symptoms than those who received intervention. Furthermore, subjects with the “risk” genotypes who did not receive intervention had higher PTSD symptoms compared to those with the “low-risk” or “resilience” genotypes or those who received intervention. Additionally, PTSD symptoms correlated with level of genetic risk at week 12 (P < .005) in the assessment-only group, but with no relationship in the intervention group, even after controlling for age, sex, race, education, income, and childhood trauma. Using logistic regression, the number of risk alleles was significantly associated with likelihood of PTSD diagnosis at week 12 (P < .05).ConclusionsThis pilot prospective study suggests that combined genetic variants may serve to predict those most at risk for developing PTSD following trauma. A psychotherapeutic intervention initiated in the emergency department within hours of the trauma may mitigate this risk. The role of genetic predictors of risk and resilience should be further evaluated in larger, prospective intervention and prevention trials.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT008955185R49CE001494/CE/NCIPC CDC HHS/United StatesR01 MH071537/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/United StatesR01 MH094757/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/United StatesR34 MH083078/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/United State

The once and future publishing library

This report looks at topic of libraries as publishers, with investigations mainly in the U.S. research institution context. Specifically, we reviewed existing literature and conducted a survey of members of the Library Publishing Coalition, seeking to learn the kinds of activities they are undertaking as publishing, the business models they are using, their definitions of success, and their attitudes tow ard open access or end-user pay models. Our aim was to better under - stand this emerging sphere of library activity and its possible future in the scholarly communication and publishing sphere. Will library publishing grow and be sustainable? Will libraries play a new and permanent role? If so, in what way and what will be required? When we refer to libraries as publishers, we consider the range of transactions in which library leaders and staff conceive, evaluate, support, and ultimately produce what we now call content for broad public dissemination, in whatever medium. We say this in full awareness that different observers will draw in different places the line between “publication” and something less structured, coherent, or significant. That ambiguity is an implicit theme of what follows. We consulted the growing number of articles and other publications (Appendix A) to better understand the range of ideas that underlie library-as-publisher discourse. Distinguishing the different strains of activity and expectation that animate current conversa - tions can help us understand not only the present moment but also the varied possibilities that loom ahead. We also look at the sub-topic of funding the library publishing enterprise, as well as the sustainability of today’s endeavors, so we present results from a small survey of about 50 librarie

This study consists of an investigation on Herbert Marcuse's aesthetic theory. In Marcuse, aesthetics is intrinsically related to the study of the socio-historical development of the scientific and technical civilization. According to him, there is a scientific management of human beings' instinctual needs to reproduce the status quo, which turns merchandise into objects of the libido. For this author, the philosophical tradition managed to divide man's mental and sensuous faculties, diminishing the features related to the senses as compared to those related to reason, thus creating a split notion of man and the world. Marcuse wants to bring these faculties back together, which were once thought of as a unity. And so the author relies on Eros to think of an aesthetic dimension of the human existence. He establishes new assumptions in order to be able to outline a return to human unity and finds in art a possible way for this to happen. He seeks Freud for support - to him, Freud realized the ability individuals have to internalize and unconsciously reproduce the repression of human impulses - and uses concepts developed by him, such as pleasure principle and reality principle, to contextualize his aesthetic theory. The philosopher further points out that the development of technology has created a technological rationality that conditions men to conformity and a "happy conscious", thus creating a false sense of well-being confirmed by repressive desublimation, a feature of contemporary society, which weakens rebellions. Marcuse's main idea lies in the ability of art as a fantasy-based matter - to conciliate sensibility and reason and to lead us to another reality, or another reality principle, in which the world would be essentially erotic and freedom, beauty and happiness would prevail

The chapter "Linguistic Variation between the Political and the Decolonial," written by Alex Pereira de Araújo, examines how linguistic variation has been used as an instrument of power, serving both to consolidate hegemonies and to devalue certain social groups. In the study, the author discusses the relationship between language policies, coloniality, and inequality, highlighting how the standardization of languages has historically been a mechanism of exclusion. The analysis ranges from the grammatization of languages by nation-states to the resistance of decolonial movements that seek to redefine the role of language in identity construction and social emancipation, exposing the need for a decolonial linguistics that recognizes linguistic diversity as a reflection of the cultural and political plurality of societies

This article presents and discuss critically some aspects of the writings and poems in the works Inventário de cicatrizes (1978) and Camarim de prisioneiro (1980), by Alex Polari de Alverga, from the perspective of testimony literature. To this end, we will discuss a corpus of poems that represent, in theme and form, social and historical tensions based on the traumatic experience of a survivor of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985). As the author himself says in a letter, his poetry is a “vomit” of those who survived a repressive context, which required new configurative means in the face of the impacts of torture. In this sense, it is a production that seeks to get closer to society in order to fight against the erasure of the violence imposed by the dictatorial regime in question. For this purpose, we will use mainly Benjamin and Frantz Fanon as a theoretical support for the debate regarding violence and Ginzburg, Salgueiro and Seligmann to understand the representation and testimony literature.O presente artigo apresenta e discute criticamente aspectos dos escritos e poemas nas obras Inventário de cicatrizes (1978) e Camarim de prisioneiro (1980), de Alex Polari de Alverga, pela perspectiva da literatura de testemunho.
