An Agent Based Approach to the Dynamics of Illegality. A position Paper

    No full text
The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand, it is aimed to propose Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as a general approach to study the dynamics of different forms of illegality and check the efficacy of different answers and potential solutions. On the other, it presents an ABM model to reproduce the demographics, economic and employments variable of a Southern Italian region (Campania) where one specific variant of Extortion Racketeering Systems (ERSs), Camorra, is highly active and prosperous. Peliminary results of a set of simulations will show the effects of varying levels of extortion and punishment on the rates of inactivity, employment, etc. of a population of agents endowed with social learning mechanisms

In the last decade, thanks to the development of new experimental techniques, the studies on human brain carried out relevant advances. Many researcher started off with new analysis fields, placed at the interface between neural and social sciences (economics, sociology, politology, law, psychology, and even aesthetics, ethics and theology). Such interdisciplinary outcomes oscillate between approaches reducing human behaviour to the neural bases and approaches aiming to integrate neural and social sciences. These new developments of the relationship between neural and social sciences provoked animated controversies, also referring to the over-simplified versions of the neuroscience outcomes frequently published by popular scientific information. In this section of the journal, four scholars (Vittorio Gallese, Rosaria Conte, Sergio Manghi, Vincenzo Pavone) from different disciplines are facing the main issues raised by ongoing controversies, thus contributing to clarify the main theoretical, epistemological and moral points

Introduction to the special issue : simulation, norms and laws

Are we satisfied with current approaches to the study of norms? Unfortunately not, as a number of questions are still open.First, a major dichotomy can be observed in the scientific treatment of norms. Theories of norms are grounded on two, unrelated notions, regularities and prescriptions. On the one hand, social scientists view norms as regularities of behaviour, supported by social expectations and possibly enforced through sanctions. On the other hand, philosophers of law and logicians focus on norms as prescriptions issued by definite authorities and enforced though institutional sanctions. Hence, a first set of questions pertaining to the connection between social norms and institutionalised laws comes forth. How can we distinguish normative behaviour (both social and legal) from normal conduct on the one hand and acquiescence under menace on the other? What are commonalities and differences between social conventions and institutional prescriptions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
