A Profile of Fatherhood Among Young Men: Moving Away from Their Birth Family and Closer to Their Child.

    No full text
Have things changed all that much in terms of how fatherhood is conceptualized and exercised in daily life? That is the question underlying this article. The author compares the findings of a recent analysis on certain aspects of the lived experiences of young fathers (under 25 years of age) with the results of studies undertaken over the past ten years, and replies in the affirmative. First of all, when considering the representations held of fathers or mothers, most of these young fathers believe that their role is a multi-faceted one, and that it is often identical to that of their spouse. According to young fathers, fatherhood is a dual experience that requires them to be present on a daily basis while also casting their eye on the future. This is an experience that is constructed out of affectionate moments, child-care duties, education in the literal sense, and especially out of shared experiences with their spouse. In addition, they question the degree to which involvement in a career should take precedence over involvement in their child's life. In other words, the former 'competes' with their ability to be present in their child's daily life, which denotes a change from the attitudes of previous generations.Fatherhood, Young Fathers, Representation, Paternal Identity, Qualitative Research

Wan Qing Minguo qu pu yan jiu =: A Study of qu notations in the late Qing and early Republican periods

Ph.D.During the late Qing and early Republican periods, writers of chuanqi, zaju and sanqu, the major subgenres of qu literature, failed to produce significant works. Kunqu Opera, the musical and theatrical representation of qu literature, gradually lost its audience to various local operas. However, the study of qu literature reached its peak during this period: large amounts of qu notations were produced; the theory of qu singing also flourished. As previous research mainly focused on the qu notations produced before the late Qing, my study will bridge this gap by bringing those later notations into light. As late Qing and early Republican qu notations as well as the theory of qu singing still have impact on today’s Kunqu Opera performance and singing, my study also seeks to highlight the significance of such historical documents in the contemporary context. In my dissertation, I concentrated on the analysis of the format, text, symbols as well as singing techniques of major qu notations produced during the late Qing and early Republican periods. Such analysis illustrates the diachronic evolution of notations. By considering the influence of different editors, social contexts and geographic regions, my research also explores the individual notation in a synchronic way. Furthermore, my study places emphasis on the text of notations by treating them as both literary and musical records. Through textual and musical analysis, I discuss how the notations influenced each other and reflected actual opera performance and singing.Apart from the Introduction and Conclusion, my dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter Two depicts the evolution of qu notations produced before the late Qing, and points out that through uncovering two formats of notations, published works and manuscripts, the tradition of “xigong” (singing-and-acting artistry) came into existence long ago. Chapter Three discusses Wang Xichun and his Eryunge qupu. The publication of Eryunge qupu marked the rise of “xigong” in mainstream notations. Chapter Four analyzes the Liuye qupu series. These notations were based on the actor Yin Guishen’s manuscript and edited by Zhang Yusun, a literatus singer. Its wide circulation demonstrated the prominence of “xigong” and made immense impact on later Kunqu Opera performance and singing. Chapter Five scrutinizes Wang Jilie and his Jicheng qupu series. Wang promoted the tradition of “qinggong” (singing-versus-acting artistry) but failed. Chapter Six centers on Tianyu Kunqu Opera Club and Tianyunshe qupu. Particular emphasis is placed upon this Club based in Wuxi, which insisted on “qinggong” and the most traditional way of qu singing. Chapter Seven discusses Yu Sulu and Yu Zhenfei, who started with the tradition of “qinggong”. They accepted the influence of “xigong” to produce the Sulu qupu, and Zhenfei qupu. Zhenfei qupu used numbered musical notation, which demonstrates the decline of traditional qu study. Parallel title from added title page.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2017.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 268-280).Abstracts in English and Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on February 10, 2020).Chen Chunmiao

SGG acknowledges support from the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) via an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship [ST/J003255/1]. SHPA acknowledges financial support from CNPq, CAPES and Fapemig. We report results of a spectropolarimetric and photometric monitoring of the weak-line T Tauri star LkCa 4 within the Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in giant Exoplanets (MaTYSSE) programme, involving ESPaDOnS at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Despite an age of only 2 Myr and a similarity with prototypical classical T Tauri stars, LkCa 4 shows no evidence for accretion and probes an interesting transition stage for star and planet formation. Large profile distortions and Zeeman signatures are detected in the unpolarized and circularly polarized lines of LkCa 4 using Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD), indicating the presence of brightness inhomogeneities and magnetic fields at the surface of LkCa 4. Using tomographic imaging, we reconstruct brightness and magnetic maps of LkCa 4 from sets of unpolarized and circularly polarized LSD profiles. The large-scale field is strong and mainly axisymmetric, featuring a ≃2 kG poloidal component and a ≃1 kG toroidal component encircling the star at equatorial latitudes – the latter making LkCa 4 markedly different from classical T Tauri stars of similar mass and age. The brightness map includes a dark spot overlapping the magnetic pole and a bright region at mid-latitudes – providing a good match to the contemporaneous photometry. We also find that differential rotation at the surface of LkCa 4 is small, typically ≃5.5 times weaker than that of the Sun, and compatible with solid-body rotation. Using our tomographic modelling, we are able to filter out the activity jitter in the radial velocity curve of LkCa 4 (of full amplitude 4.3 km s−1) down to an rms precision of 0.055 km s−1. Looking for hot Jupiters around young Sun-like stars thus appears feasible, even though we find no evidence for such planets around LkCa 4.Peer reviewe

Modelling of coupled cross-flow and in-line vortex-induced vibrations of flexible cylindrical structures. Part I: model description and validation

    No full text
This paper is first of the two papers dealing with the nonlinear modelling and investigation of coupled cross-flow and in-line vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of flexible cylindrical structures. As a continuation of the previous work (Qu and Metrikine in Ocean Eng 196:106732, 2020) where a new single wake oscillator model was proposed and studied for VIVs of rigid cylinders, the present paper focuses on applying it to flexible cylinders. In this paper, the structure is modelled as an extensible Euler–Bernoulli beam and its 3D nonlinear coupling motion is described in the absolute coordinate system. The single van der Pol wake oscillator model with nonlinear coupling to the in-line motion of the structure, in addition to the classic linear cross-flow motion coupling, is uniformly distributed along the structure to model the hydrodynamic force acting on it. The finite element method has been applied to solve the dynamics of the coupled system, and the experiments of the VIV of a top-tensioned straight riser subjected to a step flow have been taken for the validation of the model. The model has been shown to be able to capture most features of VIVs of flexible cylinders, and a good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental measurements has been observed with regard to the amplitude, frequency and excited mode of both cross-flow and in-line vibrations, as well as the mean in-line deflection due to the amplified in-line force. While it is conventionally expected that the VIV of a flexible cylinder subjected to a uniform flow is dominated by a single frequency, a multi-frequency response is observed in the simulation results over the range of flow velocities through which the transition of the dominant mode of vibration occurs.Accepted author manuscriptOffshore EngineeringEngineering Structure

Modelling vortex-induced vibrations with a single wake oscillator coupled to both cross-flow and in-line motions

    No full text
Vortex-induced vibration or as well-known as VIV is a phenomenon that has caught the attention of engineers along history. VIV is related to many engineering fields. In the offshore industry, it is of importance for risers that extract oil from the subsoil, and tethered anchors for floating units. The main aim of the thesis is to model the VIV phenomenon through a new version of the wake oscillator model by Qu,2019. This modified model includes a new in-line coupling term that is introduced in the wake equation of motion. Apart from having a new in-line coupling term in the wake equation of motion, the model also includes a coupling term that relates the lift force with the fluctuating force in the in-line direction. In order to analyze the performance of the modified wake oscillator model, it was required to understand the advantages and drawbacks of some models that were implemented before.During the investigation, four main steps were followed: 1. The performance of the equation of The Van der Pol oscillator to model the VIV phenomenon was explored. 2. Analysis and identification of advantages and drawbacks on the wake oscillator model by Ogink and Metrikine,2010, the one without in-line coupling, were conducted. This wake oscillator model was used to model a rigid cylinder elastically supported in free oscillation experiments.3. The modified wake oscillator model (Qu,2019) was used to model a rigid cylinder in free oscillation experiments and in forced in-line vibration experiments. 4. Performing a sensitivity analysis in the new model. After analyzing the behavior of the new model, it was concluded that adding a coupling term in the wake equation of motion was helpful to improve the phenomenological modelling of coupled cross-flow and in-line vortex-induced vibrations of an elastically supported cylinder in fluid flow during free oscillation experiments. However, for the case of forced in-line vibration experiments, discrepancies between the model results and experimental measurements were observed. A more in-depth study on the simulation of forced vibration experiments is recommended to further improve the wake oscillator model.Offshore and Dredging Engineerin

The study of Chinese student teachers' moral judgement

    No full text
This study focused on the ethics of Chinese pre-service teachers. Through the in-depth interviews with the student teachers, it was found that the main contents of Chinese student teachers’ moral judgment revolve around four categories: benevolence, justice, responsibility, and integrity. As for the benevolence judgment, the student teachers thought that the concrete contents of teacher’s benevolence mainly included showing sympathy for students, giving forgiveness to students, and keeping high expectations for students. The types of benevolence judgment of the student teachers were mainly manifested as the “other” position and “self” position. As for the judgment of justice, the student teachers believed that the specific contents of teacher justice mainly included respecting students’ position of subjectivity, treating every student equally, and maintaining the daily rules of the school. The types of justice judgment of the student teachers mainly showed individual orientation, custom orientation, and principle orientation. As with the judgment of responsibility, the student teachers believed that the specific contents of teachers’ responsibility mainly included cultivating students’ moral quality, improving students’ knowledge competence, and protecting students’ physical and mental safety. The main types of responsibility judgment of the student teachers were “in line with responsibility” and “out of responsibility”. As with the integrity judgment, the student teachers believed that the specific contents of the integrity of teachers included sticking to academic honesty, undertaking responsibilities of colleagues, and keeping commitments to students. The main types of integrity judgment of the student teachers were the orientation of consequence and the orientation of conscience. In addition, the moral judgment of Chinese student teachers had its cultural characteristics, that is, considering “favor” and attaching importance to “face”. The types of favor exchange among student teachers were mainly reflected in “courtesy demands reciprocity” and “return the favour to someone”. The student teachers’ maintenance of “face” was not only reflected in safeguarding personal faces, but also in safeguarding others’ faces. On the whole, “favor” and “face” often became the important basis for the moral judgment of student teachers. In addition, based on the analysis of the contents, types, and cultural characteristics of student teachers’ moral judgment, the author made a deeper judgment based on the moral judgment of Chinese student teachers, to reveal the main problems existing in the moral judgment of Chinese student teachers. First of all, the student teachers’ cognition of professional ethics was one-sided, which was embodied in the solidified sense of benevolence, the bigoted perception of justice, the blinkered perception of responsibility, and the deficiency of integrity. Secondly, the student teachers’ moral judgments deviated from the moral principle, which was embodied in that the student teachers’ moral judgment was consequence-oriented, assimilated by the moral atmosphere and following the moral custom.
