Nature reserve requirements for landscape-dependent ungulates: The case of endangered takin (Budorcas taxicolor) in Southwestern China
Large ungulates commonly perform seasonal or annual movements that encompass considerable land area and various habitat types. Effective conservation of these species relies not only on insights on their basic ecology, but also an understanding on their requirements to move across landscapes. To determine the key landscape characteristics of the endangered takin (Budorcas taxicolor), we systematically surveyed for their occurrence in the Northern MinShan Mountains, China, during 2010-2011. We then modeled takin distribution at a regional scale using autologistic regression models, and produced a predictive map for their distribution. The results showed that occurrence probabilities for takin were higher in areas with a larger range of elevation, closer to protected areas, farther from townships, and with more forest coverage. There was a considerable overlap between highly suitable takin habitat and the network of protected forest formed by nature reserves originally established to conserve giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). A broad elevation gradient and the protected area network were essential landscape characteristics in predicting takin distributions and our results suggested that takin should be considered landscape- and conservation-dependent species. The results of this study are applicable to the conservation of large ungulates throughout the mountains bordering the Tibetan Plateau and to a broader suite of mammals that conduct seasonal migrations. Food and Drink: Dining: Takin\u27 It to the Streets
Relates the author\u27s experiences dining out in Portland\u27s Old Port on streets closed to traffic to allow for outdoor seating during the coronavirus pandemic. Describes food eaten at Eaux, Via Vecchia, and Gross Confection. Intersperses these descriptions with reflections on being out in the city during a pandemic - attitudes and behaviors of other people, Old Port architecture, the post-pandemic future of open-air dining, etc
IL DIRITTO DEL LAVORO NELLE IMPRESE SOCIALMENTE RESPONSABILI
The author starts from CSR definition as it is set by the Green Paper of the European Commission, where great importance is given to labour issures, in order to examine how it affects labour law and if, how and how much labour relationships may change in companiers voluntarily involvede in it. The expert in labour law is conscious of the importance of the change takin place, especially when the tespect of rules is connected to social and environmental sustainability targets, but he/she is also conscious of the risk of bargaining a lowe workers' protection
Takin' it to the streets: culture war, rhetorical education, and democratic virtue
The author analyzes the history of rational liberalism, connecting this paradigm with the rhetoric of the culture wars, posing postmodernism as the re-emergence of Classical sophism, and offering a rhetoric pedagogy which draws from neo-Protagorean argumentation and Paolo Freire. Chapter One examines the broad debate as it applies to English Studies, as well as the debate within English Studies, contrasting the epistemological and moral assumptions of rational elitism with those postmodern. The author argues that, as democracy is embodied in rhetorical practice rather than foundational truths, the composition classroom is a natural site for education in the virtues of phronesis . Chapter Two employs an Aristotelian vocabulary to identify the central concern as a tension between moral excellence and political effectiveness. The author argues that the liberal self-concept identifies the individual apart from and in conflict with others and the community and that liberal thinking is undercut by marketplace assumptions which discourage civic participation and provide an inadequate model of inequality, domination, and oppression. Chapter Three examines the assumptions of Euro-western rationalism which underlie liberalism and their implications for democratic practice. The author argues that the dominant paradigm of inquiry misconstrues the Good as an abstract, timeless, and unitary form; misrepresents the practices of reasoning as transcending "the oral, the particular, the local, and the timely" (Toulmin Cosmopolis 30); and mishandles social institutions by according the "misrepresented" rationality of individuals. She concludes by raising the specter of the fragmented self, a passive subject, citizen of nowhere, who conflates material acquisition and the right to personal privacy with self-determination and ethical social progress. Chapter Four illustrates the way in which contemporary constructions of the Platonic cardinal virtues are used to silence dissenting voices. The author then proposes a rhetorical way of looking at these virtues which draws its force from the teachings of Protagoras, provisionally resolving the somewhat artificial binary drawn between episteme and doxai , so providing a more democratic vision of rhetorical ethics. Chapter Five offers a view of the classroom in the aftermath of September 11, linking neo-Protagorean argumentation with Freirean pedagogy.</p
Takin: An open-source software for experiment planning, visualisation, and data analysis
AbstractDue to their non-trivial resolution function, measurements on triple-axis spectrometers require extra care from the experimentalist in order to obtain optimal results and to avoid unwanted spurious artefacts. We present a free and open-source software system that aims to ease many of the tasks encountered during the planning phase, in the execution and in data treatment of experiments performed on neutron triple-axis spectrometers. The software is currently in use and has been successfully tested at the MLZ, but can be configured to work with other triple-axis instruments and instrument control systems
Palladium anchored to BisPyP@bilayer-SiO2@NMP organic–inorganic hybrid as an efficient and recoverable novel nanocatalyst in suzuki and stille C–C coupling reactions
The palladium anchored to BisPyP@bilayer-SiO2@NMP organic–inorganic hybrid was employed as an effective and recyclable organometallic catalyst in Suzuki and Stille C–C coupling reactions. The structure of this magnetic nanocatalyst was determined using various techniques such as SEM, TEM, FT-IR, EDS, ICP-OES, VSM, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, XRD, and TGA. In both of the mentioned coupling paths, the yields of the products were very favorable and ranged from 90 to 98%. Also, they had significant features compared to previous reports, such as very short reaction time (5–15 and 7–20 min respectively in the Suzuki and Stille reactions), easy work-up, broad substrate scope, ease of separation of the catalyst using a magnet, suitable reproducibility of the catalyst in 6 runs, heterogeneous nature of the catalyst and not washing it during consecutive runs with confirmation of hot filtration and ICP-OES methods. © The Author(s) 2024.Takin Shimi Sepanta Industries CoThe authors are grateful to acknowledge the Takin Shimi Sepanta Industries Co, Ilam, Iran
Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Talus: A Case Report
Introduction:
Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a metaphyseal bone tumor that is frequent in children. Talar location is exceptional.
Case Report:
We report a case of this rare lesion managed in our department. It was a 16-year-old girl who presented with heel pain at walk, without any trauma. Radiologic explorations found a pathologic fracture of the right talus due to a bone cyst. A surgical procedure was proceeded, with curettage, and bone grafting completed by a plastered immobilization. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of ABC. Consolidation was achieved in 2 months, and there was no recurrence after 5 years.
Conclusion:
ABC of the talus is a rare etiology of heel pain, which must not be forgotten in children
