Identity in the novels of Marcio Veloz Maggiolo
(in English): The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the Dominican identity in the works of the Dominican author Marcio Veloz Maggiolo. At first, the thesis briefly summarizes the evolution of the Dominican literature and mentions its most significant figures. Secondly, it deals with the evolution of the dominicaness from the colonial period up to the present and explains the reasons of the rooted antihaitianism. The second part consists of a detailed analysis of the novels The Diffuse Biography of Sombra Castañeda and The Accordion Man by Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, emphasizing the symbols of the official government's discourse, and also a more opened perspective of the dominicaness
This academic article answers the question what meaning has the memory in the construction of the subject in the Dominican short story of the writer Veloz Maggiolo. From the perspective of discourse analysis which assesses, in essence, the speech as a knowledge-building process, six representative stories of the author are analyzed. This paper defends the idea that the exploration of memory is the basis for construction of the subject in the stories of the writer mentioned above. So the subject is not configured by factual actions, but by the memory as the axis of tension and understanding of the world. The study was made possible under a model that describes and evaluates, systematically, discursive and structural elements in each of the stories analyzed. We conclude that memory not only builds and configures the subjectivity of the subject (individual and collective), but constitutes a prototypical element of the short story of Veloz Maggiolo. Therefore, the memory has a dream, textual and intertextual function.
Aurora in the Polar Cap: A Review
This paper reviews our current understanding of auroral features that appear poleward of the main auroral oval within the polar cap, especially those that are known as Sun-aligned arcs, transpolar arcs, or theta auroras. They tend to appear predominantly during periods of quiet geomagnetic activity or northwards directed interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). We also introduce polar rain aurora which has been considered as a phenomenon on open field lines. We describe the morphology of such auroras, their development and dynamics in response to solar wind-magnetosphere coupling processes, and the models that have been developed to explain them
Abstract: The present work aims to analyze a proposal of scientific and technological
development carried out by Oscar Maggiolo in Uruguay in the decades of
the 50 and 60 of the last century. The purpose of this author was to generate poles of scientific and technological development, based mainly in the
University of the Republic, whose purpose was the production of knowledge and innovation to assist the Uruguayan productive sector. To this end
Maggiolo is convinced that the key lever for the development of a national
and independent economic system is the investment in resources and infrastructure, oriented to the research and development of products in a way
to insert this knowledge in the productive chain and and so being able to
thus, to undertake a path of growth that would break with the situation of
dependence that supposes an economy sustained in the primary sector and
with little contribution of added value to the goods that it elaborates. In
view of the above, his proposal will be analyzed based on the effective possibilities of generating a path of growth offered by Uruguay in the mid-twentieth century, immersed in a context of underdevelopment and dependence
Auroral Arcs and Ion Outflow
The auroral ionosphere is a region of intense energy precipitation. Its most noteworthy effects are the intense luminous emissions observed in the auroral oval. Less visible but of primary importance for magnetospheric dynamics, this energy precipitation results in an intense outflow of ionospheric ions. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the whole chain of processes associated with auroral ion outflow. We discuss the processes that energize ionospheric ions, from the topside ionosphere to the more distant magnetospheric regions, and the effect of auroral ionospheric outflow on the magnetospheric dynamics. We will also present recent observations of auroral ion outflow. They provide a detailed picture of its large-scale spatial distribution, its dependence on solar and geomagnetic activity, its temporal dynamics, and its connection with auroral emissions. © 2016 by the American Geophysical Union. Does a Magnetosphere Protect the Ionosphere?
This chapter reviews observation at Venus, Earth, and Mars related to ionospheric ion outflow. We compareobservations made around these three planets – Venus and Mars, which are unmagnetized, and Earth, whichis magnetized – in order to assess the protective effect of planetary magnetic fields on ionospheric ion outflow. We discuss the measured flux of outflowing ionospheric ions, the energy transfer from the solar wind to the ionosphere and the fate of outflowing ionospheric ions. Our conclusion is that there is no observational evidence that, under current conditions, Earth’s magnetic field can protect its ionosphere from losing material any better thanthe induced magnetospheres of Venus and Mars. However, extrapolating this result to geological timescale or toother planets must be made with care due to the complexity of the processes associated with ionospheric ionoutflow.</p
