Defence contractors and diversification into the civil sector: Rolls-Royce, 1945-2005
A number of studies have shown that defence contractors have exhibited a marked reluctance to diversify away from defence and develop civil applications. However, the aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is one defence contractor to which this does not apply. Over a 60-year period it has moved from being almost entirely dependent on defence work to a point where defence now constitutes barely one-fifth of its turnover. This article examines the development of the company's civil aerospace business over the period since 1945. It focuses specifically on the strategies used by Rolls-Royce in the civil aerospace field. These strategies are explored in the context of changes in market conditions, technology, and governance arrangements. The effectiveness of the various strategies, including their contribution to the company's current position, is evaluated.Aerospace Industry, Defence Diversification, Strategy, Technology, Gas Turbine, Rolls-Royce,
Power-by-the-hour: the role of technology in reshaping business strategy at Rolls-Royce
There is a recognised trend of manufacturing companies offering not only products, but services and even complete solutions to business problems. Research has highlighted economic, market demand and competitiveness factors as responsible for the re-shaping of business strategies that this has involved. This study analyses the extent to which another factor, technology, has been a significant factor in the switch from product oriented to service oriented strategies. A case study of the aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is used to analyse the impact of technology, which is found to have led manufacturers to re-shape their business strategies. The study finds that developments in one technology in particular, namely digital electronics, have been a powerful enabling factor facilitating the implementation of service strategies. This provided original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Rolls-Royce with a competitive advantage relative to conventional service providers, by enabling them to acquire new knowledge management capabilities
Strategic alliances and competitive strategies in the European aerospace industry: the case of BMW Rolls-Royce GmbH
Strategic alliances are an important feature of the aerospace industry and there have been many studies that have sought to evaluate their performance. Most have taken a policy perspective exploring the economic and political benefits claimed for collaboration of this type. The perspective is a reflection of the political origins of many aerospace alliances. This study seeks to evaluate, from a managerial perspective, one of the newer alliances established on a strictly commercial basis,. It focuses on BMW Rolls-Royce GmbH, one of a small number of truly European alliances. The study concludes that although Rolls-Royce bought out its German partner after a decade of operation, the alliance was a success. The two engines developed by the alliance over this period were a technical success, overall sales were well on target and the alliance was about to break even. In addition, the study concludes that the alliance formed a key element in Rolls-Royce‟s successful strategy to extend its product portfolio, a strategy that elevated the company to second place in the global aero engine market

RollsRoyce Marine on osa maailmanlaajuista Rolls-Royce Holdings plc.
This thesis was commissioned by Rolls-Royce marine Oy in Kokkola, which is part of the global Rolls-Royce plc. The purpose of this work was to plan a pressing tool to be used on the bearing housing part for their water jet assembly. The bearing housing is a welded construction in aluminum and the problem is that this causes the joined parts to retract and need to be directed after the welding. Today the direction is done mechanically with the help of a lead hammer.
The aim with the new tool was to find a new method of direction that is more ergonomic, gives less damage to the material goods caused by the hammer and reduced noise.
The work has been delimited to be used on the bearing housings, but it was desirable to also be able to use the press tool for other components.
The result of this work is a hydraulic press tool with flexible suspension and countersupport
Engineering excellence at Rolls-Royce; a taste of English culture
Rolls-Royce is one of the most well-known brands in the world and synonymous with the highest engineering quality. Amongst Aerospace Engineers, Rolls-Royce is directly associated with the Trent turbofan aircraft engines. The engines power the world’s newest passenger aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the large Airbus A380. A Rolls-Royce powered aircraft takes o! or lands every 2.5 seconds.Aerospace Engineerin
