Approche cognitive de la traduction économique: réflexion théorique et retombées pratiques

No full text
This article is the English version of “Approche cognitive de la traduction economique: reflexion theorique et retombees pratiques” by Alessandra Rollo. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism.Building on the assumption that translation is at the same time a cognitive and a linguistic process, the present article aims to investigate the contribution that the cognitive approach can make to translation research, especially in the economic domain. In order to account for the cognitive activities underlying the mechanism of conceptualization and linguistic formulation, we shall focus on some key concepts developed in the framework of Cognitive Linguistics and Semantics (model of prototype categorization, notion of embodiment, scenes-and-frames semantics). Indeed, even though economic translation comes under a specialized domain, marked by features of exactness and terminological precision, it is not free from the problems which every translational activity entails. The economic translator can therefore profit from a linguistic-cognitive approach, integrating the lexical axis into the semantic dimension.

Abstract – In a dynamic and ever-evolving society, where people with different cultural backgrounds, social habits and linguistic patterns meet and interact, the intercultural linguistic mediator plays a key role as a ‘facilitator of communication’, providing services across a broad spectrum of socio-cultural differences. In the perspective of intercultural mediation, the approach developed by Cognitive Linguistics (CL) can serve as an important theoretical framework for the training of mediators. CL posits a close relationship between form and meaning, language and cognition, making the semantic-conceptual level the main focus of its interest. Indeed, each language categorizes the world differently, it has its own cultural models, often transmitted by metaphors; in other words, linguistic categories reflect conceptual operations carried out by speakers. It follows that understanding the conceptual mechanisms and mental representations which underlie linguistic expressions is crucial to facilitate the process of interaction between speakers belonging to different linguistic and cultural contexts. Linked to language, gesture and facial expressions are also used to convey meaning and can differ across cultures; thus it is also worth taking these two aspects of non-verbal communication into account. CL also focuses on matters of universality and language specificity. Besides a set of universal concepts or ‘semantic primes’, expressed in all languages and cultures in the world (even with formal variations), there are several culture-specific concepts/words/scripts and grammatical patterns, grounded in the historical and cultural experiences of each linguistic community. The formulation and interpretation of these concepts, related to typical values, norms and practices, can be a source of misunderstanding during interaction; this is why a mediator has to possess solid linguistic and cultural, or better still, intercultural competences of the two universes which come into contact, in order to help dialogue and mutual comprehension and to overcome communication barriers

Linguistic and ideological-cultural aspects in the translation of humour. A case of study: the comics ‘Agrippine’

Resting on an intersection between linguistic manipulation and the sociocultural roots of a community, humour is generally considered to be untranslatable, as an element of interlinguistic and intercultural inequivalence. This paper is especially concerned with the translation of humour in a composite and multisemiotic text such as comics, in which both verbal and non-verbal components blend in a coherent language. Our analysis will be focused on a varied selection of examples from Claire Bretécheter’s comics series Agrippine, whose humorous charge is based on the use of a slang which is partially true, partially invented and on situations grounded in a specific sociocultural and ideological context. We will investigate some mains issues due to the presence of humour (verbal, lingua-cultural and visual) in comics, as well as the translation strategies which can be adopted in the transfer from French into Italian, in order to maintain the humorous effect of the source text

Abstract – At present, audiovisual translation is one of the most interesting and stimulating domains within the field of Translation Studies. Resting on a rich semiotic apparatus, marked by the interplay of a double channel of communication – audio/visual – with different types of signs – verbal/non-verbal codes, the audiovisual text is a complex one, whose transfer from one language into another represents a challenging task for every professional in this field. Especially in dubbing, the translator/adapter has to work on the interlinguistic level as well as on the intersemiotic level (iconic, paralinguistic elements, etc.): as many codes having great semantic potential and transmitting useful cultural information, as we shall see in the film which we have taken as the object of our analyses: Astérix et Obélix: Au Service de Sa Majesté (2012). This fourth film adaptation (except cartoons) of Astérix’s adventures offers a series of gags playing on the parody of typical traditions, symbols, linguistic clichés and cultural stereotypes associated with British culture. Italian dubbing resorts to different translation strategies, some of which come under a foreignizing approach, aiming at preserving the original’s colour and mood, whereas others are in line with a domesticating approach, in order to bring the product closer to the final audience. Indeed, instead of stressing the idea of a polarization or a dichotomy between two contrasting perspectives, we find it advisable to envisage a gradation between two instances which occur at the same time and coexist in a complementary way during the translation process. Keywords: audiovisual translation; dubbing; cultural elements; humorous elements; foreignization/domestication.

Fouad Laroui, a talented Moroccan author who writes in French and at times Dutch, is an exemplar of the in-between – in fact, the in-between-several-cultures. Like many Moroccans, he is “neither here nor there”. His original work, notable for the author’s dual belonging as well as its highly ironic vein, embodies multiple facets of multiculturalism, which he experienced during his youth at the French “lycée” in Casablanca, his trips to the western world (he now lives in Amsterdam) and through openness to European cultures. His stories in French are enriched with diverse references, resulting in a sort of patchwork – a jumble of words where the French language is present, but it is coloured by other languages and literary reminiscences (Laroui cited in Martin & Drevet 107).This article reflects on the author’s relationship with the French language and culture, by analysing the sense of identity and search for identity of his characters whose connections with France, and the western world, are marked by conflicting feelings, bearing traces of the Maghreb authors’ own sense of being torn. Is French an instrument of oppression or emancipation? The article focuses on two representative works, “Le jour où Malika ne s’est pas mariée” (2009) and “Une année chez les Français” (2010), set against the complex, multilingual backdrop of Morocco as discussed in his essay “Le drame linguistique marocain” (2011).Fouad Laroui, a talented Moroccan author who writes in French and at times Dutch, is an exemplar of the in-between – in fact, the in-between-several-cultures. Dans une perspective contrastive anglais-français-italien, nous développerons une analyse traductologique de quelques documents institutionnels à vocation de communication – des textes pragmatiques à visée informative traduits pour l’UE – en vue de vérifier si les instances majeures que sont l’équivalence, la fidélité au sens et la créativité/adaptation peuvent s’entrecroiser lors de l’opération traduisante pour offrir des textes qui soient à la fois précis et fluides dans le contexte d’arrivée. ÉQUIVALENCE ET CRÉATIVITÉ – TRANSLATING PRAGMAGTIC TEXTS IN INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXTS: CONSTRAINTS, EQUIVALENCE AND CREATIVITY Taking an English-French-Italian contrastive perspective, we will develop a translation analysis of some communicational institutional documents – pragmatic texts with an informative purpose translated for the EU – to see whether major instances of equivalence, faithfulness to the meaning and creativity/adaptation can be interwoven during the translation process to offer texts that are both accurate and fluent for the target audience
