Childhood in the works of Silvina Ocampo and Alejandra Pizarnik

and perspective
in
the Argentine
cuentista and
poet
Silvina Ocampo (1903-1993)
and traces this thematic
and vital
link to the
Argentine
poet
Alejandra Pizamik (1936-1972). The
study
looks
at childhood not only
in
relation to their literary texts but
also
in the
writers' construction of self-identity
within
their
socio-literary context, and at
the
role played
by
visual art
in their
aesthetic.
Chapter 1
contrasts Silvina
with
her
elder sister
Victoria Ocampo through their
differing literary
appropriation of a shared childhood. It distinguishes Ocampo from
Adolfo Bioy Casares and
Jorge Luis Borges in terms of
her fictional logic
and
her
treatment of games, drawing comparisons instead with Julio Cortdzar.
Chapter 2
undertakes close reading of various Ocampo texts, including
some
for
children,
in
order to explore
her
vision of childhood through nostalgia, adult-child
power relationships, aging and rejuvenation, and moments of
initiation or
imitation.
Chapter 3
turns to Pizarnik
and the myth of the child-poet.
It
analyses
her
child
personae through Andre Breton's Surrealism, Jean Cocteau
and
Octavio Paz, through
her borrowings from Alice in Wonderland
and
Nadja,
and
through
her
obsession with
madness, death,
orphanhood, violation and transgression.
Chapter 4 is
comparative.
It
outlines the context
in
which
Ocampo
and
Pizamik's
passionate friendship developed,
and considers
Pizamik's
essay on
Elpecado
mortal.
It
then explores their broad
mutual
literary
and
thematic
affinities.
My
conclusion is that Ocampo's works achieve equilibrium between childhood and age,
whereas Pizarnik's
much-discussed poetic crisis of exile
from language itself
parallels
her deep sense of anxiety at being
exiled from the world of childhood.
This thesis
contributes to the
study of
Argentine literature by drawing
revealing
comparisons
between
two key
writers
through their shared obsession with childhood,
arguing that
an understanding of their attitudes
to childhood
is fundamental
to
appreciating
fully their
work.

Ricardo Rojas: a Journey to the Interior, the Popular Culture and the Unconscious
Get PDFEste artículo indaga en torno a las figuraciones del intelectual presentes en algunos ensayos y conferencias de Rojas. En estos trabajos, el autor se auto-define como un intérprete del mestizaje, dispuesto a viajar, en términos simbólicos, hacia el pasado histórico y hacia el inconsciente colectivo, para recuperar las significaciones profundas presentes en el folclore. Además, analiza el modo en que la correspondencia intercambiada con los peruanos Luis Valcárcel y Uriel García, entre otros, deja ver la presencia de fuertes lazos de solidaridad intelectual, la circulación fluida de ideas y la formación conjunta de archivos arqueológicos y fotográficos del mundo indígena. El diálogo de Rojas con estos intelectuales peruanos redunda en una mutua legitimación regionalista, incluyendo una positiva americanización e indigenización simbólica de la Argentina.This article analyzes representations of the intellectual that appeared in essays and conferences of Ricardo Rojas. In these works, the author defines himself as an interpreter of miscegenation, willing to travel, in symbolic terms, to the historical past and toward a collective unconscious to recover the deep meanings that exist in folklore. It also analyzes the way that interchanges with Peruvians Luis Varcárcel and Uriel García, among others, allows one to see the existence of strong ties of intellectual solidarity, the free flow of ideas, and the joint formation of archeological and photographical archives of the indigenous world. Rojas’ dialogue with these Peruvian intellectuals results in a mutual regionalist legitimation, including a positive Americanization –and a symbolic indigenization– of Argentina.

No full textThe novel, Algo habla con mi voz, by Vaitière Alejandra Rojas, written as an epistolary novel, accounts for the subjective experience of a young Venezuelan woman who experiences migration as an exile. This exile is preceded by an insilio in the country of origin. In the midst of the economic hardships, the pain of loss dragged by many years in Venezuela, the uncertainty and precariousness that lives in Bogotá, the city of arrival, the narrating protagonist finds a refuge in literature. In his writing, which dialogues with the authors of a very personal library, he founds his own literary homeland.La novela Algo habla con mi voz, de Vaitière Alejandra Rojas, escrita como novela epistolar, da cuenta de la experiencia subjetiva de una joven mujer venezolana que experimenta la migración como un exilio. Ese exilio está precedido por un insilio en el país de origen. En medio de las penurias económicas, del dolor de la pérdida arrastrado por muchos años en Venezuela, de la incertidumbre y la precariedad que vive en Bogotá, la ciudad de llegada, la protagonista narradora encuentra un refugio en la literatura. En su escritura, que dialoga con los autores de una biblioteca muy personal, funda su propia patria literaria.
