Pest infestation to soybean plant results in yield losses up to 80%. Therefore, it needs to be controlled properly. The main problem in controlling it is that far mers a nd ext ension workers a re difficult to promptly diagnose the types of main pest infecting the plant in the field. In consequence to the technology applied to control it is not appropriate. Whether it is mechanically, biologically, and chemically. To help them in making prompt decission, a user friendly tool need to be developed. One of the tools is an expert system. The development and implementation of the system were carried out at Indonesian Assessmetn Institute for Agricultural Technology (IAIAT) of West Sumatera Province and Universitas Putra Indonesia, Padang. The project was conducted from March to September 2009. The methodology applied in designing, developing, and implementing. The system was process-oriented methodology that is a model driven technique orienting to a process. The expert system generated uses based knowledge of 15 pests types attaching soybean plant, 7 sites of plant damage, 53 damage symptoms, and 166 nules. While the knowledge base is 15 technologies of main pest management having certainty factor/CF around 0.8 – 1.0. The system interface consists of two forms, that are one for advanced user and the another one for farmer or extension worker. The advanced one is able to improve the existing knowledge as well as the rules and the non advanced just consult to the system. The developed system need to be further developed to make it comprehensive. The system is also called “Sipakar Hatmalai”

The paper is an introduction to author’s doctoral research guided by Com-parative Study of Cultures program. One of the main theories of the pro-gram is that existing understanding of Indian culture depends on Christian-theological framework. The author tests the theory by studying western re-ception of early Buddhism but, since the topic is so broad the paper shall focus on supposed main doctrine of Buddhism: anatman. Hence, the main question is formulated as follows: What is an understanding of anatman by Czech authors since the end of 19th century until today? The author shall show how the term atman was translated by theological conceptions spirit and soul and how this move effected an understanding of the term. During 20th century a shift is observed: atman is translated by non-theological con-cept self. Does this shift entail a change in understanding of the term or does it lie only on the level of terminology

    Personal identity and eastern thought

    No full text
This paper aims to show that the problem of personal identity is a fundamental question of the classical Indian thought. Usually we tend to think that personal identity is a Western philosophical subject, and so we tend to forget the significance of the Self (Atman) in Hinduism and even in Buddhism. The author shows how the Indian thought approached the question of personal identity and which was the singular solution outlined in the work consensually attributed to Gotama, the Buddha

The article considers the philosophical polemics about the self (the pudgala) between "orthodox" Buddhism in the person of Shantarakshita and his direct disciple Kamalashila (8th century) with the "heretical" Buddhist school Vatsiputriya on the material of the chapter "The study of Atman by the Teaching of Vatsiputriyas" (Vatsiputriyaparikalpitatmapariksha) of the section "Atmapariksha" of "Tattvasamgrahapanjika". At the beginning of the article, a brief information on Shantarakshita and his work is given, as well as about Vatsiputriya. According to this school, the pudgala is the actor of karma, the enjoyer of its fruits, the subject of rebirth and experience. The author makes a conclusion about dissimilarity of the philosophical logics of the opponents

Healing the self through spirituality in K.S Maniam's Between Lives

The quest for a meaningful life and selfhood is one of the main themes in the works of K.S Maniam, a Malaysian Literature in English author. The main characters in Maniam’s works often yearn for an inner fulfillment and enlightenment that cannot be solely addressed through the socio-political and economic means. Thus, issues such as a sense of displacement, anxiety and alienation that haunt the Malaysian Indians in Maniam’s works are not just common features of postcolonial and diasporic conditions. Rather, they are symptomatic of an existential crisis. This article explores how spirituality provides a source of healing to Sumitra, the protagonist of his novel Between Lives. It uses Advaita Vedanta, an Indian philosophy to understand the genesis of Sumitra’s existential crisis and how she can surmount it. In this novel, Maniam uses recurring motifs that eschew subject-object duality such as rites of passage, excursions and mystical experiences. These motifs reflect the concept of “oneness” of Advaita Vedanta that stresses true self (Atman) transcends materialism and corporeality. Through her spiritual journey, Sumitra critically re-examines her misidentification with the ego-identity and gains insight into the true nature of “self” and “reality”. Consequently, Sumitra finds a more viable sense of selfhood through the Hindu spiritual concept of Atman. Finally, this study suggests that spirituality provides a more dynamic view of the Malaysian Indian identity construction

The purpose of this study was to examine the pre-service teachers’ computational thinking (CT) skills and self-efficacy (SE) towards teaching CT, who attended a course in which educational games were developed in a block-based programming environment and lesson plans were prepared accordingly. The research was conducted with thirty seven pre-service teachers who took the instructional technologies course. The convergent parallel mixed method was used in this study. Accordingly, quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest was applied in the quantitative part, and thematic analysis was conducted in the qualitative part. The implementation process was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, pre-service teachers gained awareness about the components of CT and established applications about algorithm writing and Scratch. In the second stage, pre-service teachers developed Scratch-based games related to their subjecs areas. In the third stage, they prepared lesson plans teaching CT skills by using the games that they developed. The quantitative findings of the study showed that pre-service teachers’ CT and SE perceptions towards its teaching increased significantly. This increase had a weak effect on the CT skill and a large effect on the SE perception regarding the teaching of this skill. It was concluded that the qualitative findings support the quantitative findings. Pre-service teachers stated that the implementation process contributed to their CT skills and SE towards its teaching. In addition, the implementation process contributed to their professional competencies, including technological and pedagogical knowledge. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V
