    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A Multi-species modelling approach to assess the influence of hydrological regime on commercial fisheries in a tropical river?estuary system

    Not AvailableHydrological regime is the key determinant of fish species diversity and production in the river?estuary system; thereby it influences the catch dynamics of multispecies fisheries of the system. It is of significant importance to quantify the effect of the river hydrological regime on commercial fisheries in the river?estuarysystem, for developing strategic management plans. This article presents an analytical framework to accomplish the same for commercial fisheries of multiple species, including Macrobrachium rosenbergii, Mugil spp., Harpadon neherus, Wallago attu and Tenualosa ilisha, of a tropical river?estuary system. The prime tool of the framework is ?Dynamic Factor Analysis?, which identifies the common trends in catch, and quantifies the influence of hydrological factors on multiple commercial fisheries. Annual hydrological and multispecies catch data of the Narmada river?estuary system for the period 1991 to 2013 have been used in the present study. The results reveal two significant trends: Trend 1, representing mainly the Tenualosa ilisha catch; and Trend 2, representing commercial fish catches of the remaining species. The annual observable flood level significantly influences the catch of all but Mugil spp. species. The annual sediment load significantly influences the catch of Tenualosa ilisha , Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Harpadon nehereus. This analytical approach has been effective in understanding the common catch trend patterns and the hydrological factors influencing them in the river?estuary system. The results can be used for formulating sustainable management plans for multispecies commercial fisheries in the river?estuary system

    Not AvailableThere is an urgent need for identification of the eco - friendly/cleaner production system that is more productive and profitable; efficient user of energy, water, and carbon - based inputs, and also environmentally safer. The four years study was conducted from 2016 to 2019, where the dominant rice - wheat cropping system is practiced extensively after Green Revolution. The objectives of the experiment were to evaluate: (1) energy budgeting, (2) carbon auditing, (3) production and economic efficiency of diverse cropping systems for upland rainfed as well as irrigated ecosystems of eastern India. Tillage and cropping system treatments were laid out according to a completely randomized block design and replicated thrice. Ten cropping sequences were comprised of: (T1) a farmers practice of transplanted rice - wheat - mungbean, (T2) conventional till - direct seeded rice (CTDSR) - wheat - mungbean, (T3) soybean - maize, (T4) CTDSR - mustard - urdbean, (T5) foxtail millet - lentil - fallow, (T6) pearl millet - chickpea - fallow, (T7) finger millet - toria - fallow, (T8) sorghum (grain) - chickpea - fallow, (T9) maize cobpigeon pea, and (T10) sorghum (fodder) - mustard - urdbean. Energy contributions of different inputs were 4255, 1221, 818, and 412% for fertilizers, diesel, labour, and electricity, respectively. The amount of indirect (fertilizer, chemicals, and machinery) and direct (diesel and electricity) non - renewable energy inputs were 4060 and 1826%, respectively. Indirect renewable energy input (seed and crop residues) was 17% as compared to 1524% of direct - renewable energy (human labour and irrigation water). The maximum energy input was recorded for T1 (53511 MJ ha1). The maximum biomass production (40.2 Mg ha1) was recorded with T9, while the maximum benefit: cost ratio (3.64) was noted for T10 and T8. The highest specific energy (33.5 MJ kg1) and energy productivity (0.92 kg MJ1) were recorded in T8 treatment. Irrespective of cropping systems, retention of crop residues accounted for 28.658.5% of total carbon input. The carbon sustainability index was 57 times higher for the millet - based production system [T6 (9.32) and T8 (10.27)] compared to cereal - based systems [T1 (1.66) and T2 (1.21)]. Diversification of the rice - wheat system through climate - resilient millets - based production system reduced 84% energy consumption and 87% carbon footprint. The millet - based production system also helps in reducing the carbon input by 172% and improves the energy use efficiency by 61% compared to the cereal - based cropping system. Therefore, the study has an innovative idea to support the crop modelling, policymakers, government planners, researchers, and producers to achieve the sustainable development goals in Indo - Gangetic Plains and similar agro - climatic conditions of South Asia

    Not AvailableFish is an essential component of the diet of the most populace in Assam and fish farming has been one of the sources of livelihood in rural areas. Assam ranks first in fish production among North-eastern states of India. However, fish production is not sufficient to meet the demand despite having vast aquatic resources in the state. The present study was undertaken to determine the decadal growth of fish production in the state using the compound growth rate. The study also attempted modeling and forecasting of fish production in Assam using Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) methodology. For the present study, time-series data on fish production in Assam from 1980-81 to 2018-19 was obtained from the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Assam. Data for the period 1980-81 to 2014-15 was utilized to build an ARIMA model and validated through the remaining data from 2015-16 to 2018-19. The best suitable model for the state?s fish production was ARIMA (1, 1, 0) based on the values of the model selection criterion. The actual fish production and forecast values using a fitted model were in close agreement. The out-of-sample forecast values of fish production in the state for the subsequent years 2019-20 to 2022-23 showed an increasing trend from 336.97 to 358.21 thousand metric tonnes. Considering the vast aquatic resources in the state, the study calls for serious attention by policymakers, researchers, and developmental agencies for harnessing the potential of fisheries resources for making the North-east region self-sufficient in fish production as a whole and Assam in particular

    Not AvailableWheat is an important cool season cereal crop of India, production and quality get compromised due to biotic and abiotic stresses. Wheat is susceptible to a variety of diseases and insect pests, including birds. Birds attack on standing crop are not very often and extent and pattern of damage varies considerably, however, its management practices is generally not taken in to account. The bird preferred to attack wheat crops while they were in the reproductive stage, especially during milking to dough stage. The data collected over the course of a two-year field study in the Kashmir valley at Research Farm Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) has been subjected to Random Forest model to determine whether there is a trait-specific specific preference for attack if any. Random forest (RF) model identified five major features out of 13 selected features of wheat germplasm with seventy percent accuracy for parrot birds'preferredto attack on wheat germplasm. RF Model suggests that tallerheight, having long spikes and a greater number of ears, along with more biomass and grain yields, could be possible traits that bird pest targetduring the reproductive stage. It was inferenced that the average performance of the random forest model demonstrated with model accuracy (71%), sensitivity (0.77), kappa 0.41 and receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC-0.74) and showed good fit for classification of parrot attack on wheat germplasm

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
