    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Among the outstanding questions of particle physics, proof of the existence of a magnetic monopole is still one of great interest. One compelling argument that motivates the search for magnetic monopoles is Paul Dirac's finding that the seemingly inexplicable quantized nature of the electric charge can be explained through the existence of magnetic monopoles. TeV-mass Dirac magnetic monopoles could potentially be produced by the sqrt{s} = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. This thesis documents a search for magnetic monopoles using a 138 fb^-1 dataset of Run 2 proton-proton collisions at the LHC collected by the ATLAS experiment. Due to the highly ionizing nature of the interaction of magnetic monopoles with matter, the search is extended to include other highly ionizing particles known as high electric charge objects. Two production mechanisms are considered as benchmark models to interpret the results, Drell-Yan and photon fusion. No spin constraints are imposed by Dirac's theory, and therefore both spin-0 and spin-1/2 are modelled. The collision conditions allow for masses between 0.2 and 4TeV to be studied. Theoretical considerations and experimental constraints motivate studying magnetic charges |g|= 1 and 2 g_D for magnetic monopoles and the range of |z| = 20 through |z| = 100 for high electric charge objects. Detection is based on the particle's characteristic high ionization of matter, penetration distance in the detector and lack of calorimeter shower. A data driven method is used to estimate the background contamination. No excess events are found in the signal region. Cross-section limits are computed through the CLs method with 95% confidence level. The highest mass limits to date for particle collider highly ionizing particle searches are presented

    Recent searches for new phenomena with the ATLAS detector

    Many theories beyond the Standard Model (BSM) have been proposed to address several of the Standard Model shortcomings, such as the origin of dark matter and neutrino masses, the fine-tuning of the Higgs Boson mass, or the observed pattern of masses and mixing angles in the quark and lepton sectors. Many of these BSM extensions predict new particles or interactions directly accessible at the LHC. This talk will present some highlights on recent searches based on the the full Run 2 data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These include searches for leptoquarks and vector-like quarks, new high mass resonances and lepton flavour violating decays, dark matter searches in final states with large missing transverse momentum, as well as dark-sector searches using unconventional and long-lived particle signatures

    Increasing Multilingualism in ATLAS’ Science Communication

    Despite modern particle physics being an international endeavour, the vast majority of its educational material is only published in English. By making material available in other languages, physicists can make in-roads with new audiences – especially those very young or very old – in their home countries. The ATLAS Collaboration has published colouring books, activity sheets, fact sheets and cheat sheets aimed at communicating science to a non-expert audience. An effort is underway to translate this content into as many languages as possible, taking advantage of the countless multilingual members of the collaboration. Currently all of this content is available in at least two languages other than English, with the ATLAS Colouring Book being the one available in the most languages (18 so far). The reach of this multilingual content is presented

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
