Natural variation of response to glyphosate in Sinapis alba (Brassicaceae): Physiological effects, shikimate accumulation and genetic mechanisms
15 Pags.- 7 Figs.- 2 Tabls. Data Availability Statement: The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are available in the Zenodo Repository https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15697367 © 2025 The Author(s). This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide, and glyphosate-resistant weeds have increased globally. Resistance mechanisms, including target-site resistance (TSR) and non-target-site resistance (NTSR), are well documented, but their extent and importance are poorly understood among biotypes. This study examines the natural variation in glyphosate sensitivity and its genetic basis in white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) across 192 accessions in Southern Spain. We conducted a multi-population screening to evaluate plant performance, shikimate accumulation, survival and yield under glyphosate exposure and analysed the spatial response pattern. We also assessed the expression of two genes linked to glyphosate resistance, EPSPS and ABCC8, sequenced EPSPS to detect potential mutations and quantified its copy number. Results show glyphosate significantly reduces physiological parameters, with a 90% decrease in photosynthetic rate, a 22% reduction in chlorophyll concentration and a 38% decrease in specific leaf area. However, 32% of accessions survived and produced seeds under glyphosate exposure (1598 g.a.e. ha−1) in the vegetative stage. Survivors accumulated 13% less shikimate, indicating a reduced glyphosate effect on the shikimate pathway. Overexpression of the NTS ABCC8 gene was the most common mechanism in 39% of non-susceptible accessions. Yet, about 20% of survivors were not linked to EPSPS duplication or overexpression of EPSPS or ABCC8, suggesting other genetic mechanisms may contribute to glyphosate resistance in S. alba. Resistant phenotypes were widely dispersed, not confined to specific areas, highlighting the potential role of gene flow in the evolution of herbicide response in S. alba. Our study suggests that the plant resistance to glyphosate may arise from multiple and non-exclusive genetic mechanisms.
Investigating the impact of different dietary fibres on the gastrointestinal digestion of food proteins
Data will be made available on request. In Press.Polysaccharides such as agar, alginate, carrageenan, and cellulose, are highly relevant to the food industry, since they can be naturally found in alternative food sources such as seaweeds, as well as used as functional ingredients in multiple food products. However, their impact on the gastrointestinal digestion of proteins is not yet fully understood. This study investigated the impact of these dietary fibres on the digestion of two model food proteins: casein and whey protein isolate (WPI). In vitro gastrointestinal digestions were carried out, and the resulting digesta were evaluated in terms of digestibility, rheological behaviour, microstructure, and nanostructural organization. Our results showed that adding dietary fibres, especially at higher concentrations (75%), markedly decreased protein digestibility; however, the action mechanism is different depending on the polysaccharide type. Among the tested polysaccharides, alginate and cellulose produced the lowest digestibilities, which in the case of cellulose was mostly driven by limited accessibility of the enzymes towards the protein substrate, while in the case of alginate was due to a combination of strong protein-polysaccharide interactions and increased medium viscosity. SAXS analyses also revealed that the nanoassembly process of the digestion products was strongly affected by the presence of polysaccharides, with protein-polysaccharide interactions hindering the formation of bile salts lamellar structures. These findings provide fundamental insights into how dietary fibres modulate protein digestion, highlighting their relevance in the rational design of functional food systems with improved nutritional and structural properties. This work was funded by European Union (ERC, PRODIGEST, ERC-2022-COG 101086483). Intertextual References as “Encyclopaedic Implicatures”: The Millenary Tradition of Vampires in Contemporary (Graphic) Novels
The aim of this article is to analyse how the image of the vampire – as represented in novels and other artistic creations produced throughout the centuries – lives on in many fictional works stemming from contemporaneity. In particular, this paper focuses on the intertextual references and direct quotations often inserted in recent (narrative and graphic) novels in order to create a close connection with the long-standing tradition of the vampire and activate specific scenarios in which, through implicatures and indirect speech acts, the narrative can acquire meaning.
In particular, by bringing together Semiotics, Linguistics and Pragmatics, this article puts forward the notion of “particularized and/or general encyclopaedic implicature” as a new category which might become useful in the analysis of texts of various kinds and the interpretation process they entail.
The analysis developed here focuses in particular on the novels published by American author Ellen Schreiber between 2000 and 2010, and the graphic novels which translate them intersemiotically

The effect of female participation on fertility in Spain: how does it change as the birth comes closer.
In this paper we anaIyze the effect of female labor force participation on fertility decisions. We focus on two issues that emerge when estimating such effect: (i) the endogeneity between fertility and participation; and (ii) the period in which participation is measured with respect to fertility. We account for the first problem by using an empirical model based on the assumption that women decide on labor force participation and childbearing in response to incentives provided by prices and incomes. The second issue is addressed exploiting the panel structure of our data (matched EPA files). which allow us to measure women labor force participation at several points in the time preceding a birth. Our results show that it is important to account for the endogeneity between participation and fertility and that women's attitude toward the labour market changes along the pregnancy.Fertility; Femal labor force participation; Endogeneity;

The biological effects of the resveratrol-loaded nanoparticles were tested both in vitro, in a cell culture of RAW 264.7 cells (mouse macrophages), and in vivo, in the trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid model of rat colitis, when administered intracolonically. Results: The resveratrol liberation in 1× phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; pH 7.4) was characterized by fast liberation, reaching the solubility limit in 3 hours, which was maintained over a period of 80 hours. The in vitro assays revealed immunomodulatory properties exerted by these resveratrol-loaded nanoparticles since they promoted macrophage activity in basal conditions and inhibited this activity when stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. The in vivo experiments showed that after evaluation of the macroscopic symptoms, inflammatory markers, and intestinal barrier function, the fibroin nanoparticles loaded with resveratrol had a better effect than the single treatments, being similar to that produced by the glucocorticoid dexamethasone. Conclusion: Silk fibroin nanoparticles constitute an attractive strategy for the controlled release of resveratrol, showing immunomodulatory properties and intestinal anti-inflammatory effects.
